He is supposed to have eleven arms. This great Stotra was sent to me by Sri Krishna Muralidharan. May God  bless him.)

What are Stotras?

Stotra or Hindu prayers
Stotra comes from the word Sthuthi and Sthuthi means praise. Some stotras are also called as Sthavas. Stotra could be broadly translated as  “Praise of God”.  Stotras can be broadly classified  according the  time period as those  originating during period of Vedas, period of the Puranas   and post Purana  stotras or according to the style in which they are written.
A.Stotra literature  over time.
   1.Stotras of the Vedic period
The foremost among the Vedic Stotras  is Rudram and chamakam   addressed to Lord Shiva, Narayana as well as Purusha Suktham addressed to Lord Vishnu    and Sri Suktham, Durga Suktham, Lakshmi Suktham etc    addressed to the Goddess. There are many other great Sukthams like Bhagya suktham , Ikamathya Suktham , Bhoo Suktham, Medha Suktham etc. The Ganesa Atharva Sira  Upanishad  , which is from Atharva Veda  is again a prayer addressed to Lord Ganesa.  Many of these are not praise of God as such but description  of several aspect of the God including its philosophy.   These Sukthas were used mostly   for performing Yagas  and even today , though in  some places  they are chanted  mostly they are   used in fire  sacrifices.

Stotras  of the Puranic period.
It was the advent of Puranas   that we started praying of worship of Individual Gods.  Some of the greatest  Hindu Stotras  originated     at this time, The most famous are  the Adithya Hrudayam  which is a part of Valmiki Ramayanam , Vishnu Sahasranamam which is a part of  Maha Bharatham, Lalitha Sahasranamam and Lalitha Trishathi   which are both  part of the Markandeys puranam , The Devi Mahatmyam which is again a part of  Markandeya puranam, the Gopika Gita , a part of Maha Bhagawatham  and very many other  Sahasranamams   and stotras which are  part of several Puranas.  The prayers called Kavachams (Armours to protect ourselves)    again originated  during  this period.

Post Puranic Stotras
Possibly after  all the Puranas  were written, a vast outpouring  of  composition of prayers  by very many poets    took place  . Many Prayers  which originate   in the earliest period     are not available. The stotra as a vehicle  of prayers was greatly popularized  by  Adhi Sankara    and his  disciples.  We find Sankara ‘s prayers addressed to all most  all gods. Apart from prayers eulogizing Gods , he also wrote several  very philosophical  prayers. Soundarya Lahiri    and Shivananda Lahari   are possibly the greatest stotras written by him. He also wrote several prayers  using the Bhujanga meter. His disciples continued this trend. Almost in the same  period , the Nayanmars  of Tamil Nadu  who were Saivite saints  contributed largely   to the Saivite Stotra literature . There was also a great upsurge of Tamil prayers  written by  various great saints praising Lord Subramanya /Muruga.
Saint Ramanuja   did not write many stotras b ut the Gadhya thrayam   which are prose prayers  are really great prayers.  His disciple Vedant Desika  has  written very large number   of very  excellent   prayers.  The outpouring of stotras  mainly in tamil  were written by   the Azhvars who were all Vaishnavite saints. Saint MadhWa   and his followers   and the Hari Dasas of Karnataka   also wrote many prayers .
The Thulasi Das, Kabir Das, Sur Das ,  and many such great ones  contributed to the Hindi prayers. Poet Jayadeva  wrote his Gita Govindam   in Sanskrit and a  very large  number of prayers were written by   the  great Krishna   and Durga devotees  of Bengal. There was also a great Bhakthi movement in Maharashtra   and the stotras of this genre   are called Abhangs.
The Stotra literature   is not growing   well in the modern times except for rare  compositions.

B.Stotra literature  by type.
I have already mentioned that   all the Sukthams belong to the Vedic period. There are very many type of Stotras     written after  the Vedic period.

1.Sahasranamams
These are   the  listing of thousand names   of each God. If you go through them critically    you may not find     that all these   thousand names are different and we find that several names are repeated. The most famous of the Sahasranamams  are the Vishnu sahasranamam    and the Lalitha Sahasranamam. Shiva Sahasranamam and Lakshmi Sahasranams are  also relatively popular.Saharanamams are available for most of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu and all other Gods   and Goddesses. Trisathi giving 300 names, ashtotharams giving 108 names, Satha Nama stotrams giving one hundred names , Shodasa nama stotram giving sixteen names  and  Dwadasa nama storams(12 names)  also belong to this category  of stotras.

2.Ashtakams
These are possibly the most popular form of Hindu stotras.  These normally contain eight verses  praising the God or Goddess. Most of them are  very simple and easy to understand. There is a phala Sruthi attached to every ashtakam   giving the possible effect of chanting that   particular prayer.

3.Kavachams
These are another very popular form of prayers    addressed to Gods as well as planets . Essentially they request God to protect different parts of our body as well as mind. It also requests God to protect us in different circumstances. Narayana Kavacham is one of the most famous in this category.
4.Dasakam
These are similar to ashtakam but with ten Stanzas.
5.Panchakam
These are prayers with five stanzas.
5.Shatkam
These are again  similar to ashtakam but   with six stanzas
6.Spathakam
These are prayers with  seven stanzas.
7.Pancha Dasi
These are longer prayers with fifty stanzas
8.Pancha sathi
These are still longer poems with five hundred  stanzas.
9.Sthava Raja
These are supposed to  be  the king of prayers addressed to a particular God. Though they are not available for all Gods, many of them are available.
10.Bhujanga Stotram
These  as well as Bhujanga prayatha stotrams are  supposed to move like a snake. Adhi Sankara is credited with composing many such Bhujangams. His “Subramanya Bhujangam”  is very famous
11.Dandakam
These are stotras where there is no restriction on the length of a line of a stanza. Some of the Dandakams  are very long prayers with just one line. Shyamala Dandakam of poet Kalidasa  is the greatest in this category.
12.Karavalamba Stotram
These prayers are addressed to the God requesting him    to extend his hand in support to us. The Lakshmi Narasimha Karavalamba stotram  of Adhi Sankara is possibly the most famous.
13.Suprabathams
These are prayers addressed to the lord to wake him up. The oldest among this type of stotras are the thirupalliyezhuchi  in Tamil   and the most famous is the  Venkateswara Suprabatham.
14. Lahari
Lahari means waves. In this form of prayer  the stanzas follow each other like waves. Soundarya Lahari of Adhi Sankara  is possibly the most famous.
15.Pasuram
These are tamil prayers written by the great Vaishnavite  saints of Tamil Nadu called  the Azhvars.
16.THiruvachakam
These are again Tamil prayers written by Nayanmars , the Tamil saints  eulogizing  Lord Shiva.
17. Aarthi
These are Hindi prayers   praising a particular God. These are available addressed to  almost all Gods.
18.Chalisa
These are again Hindi prayers  but have forty stanzas  each. The most famous is Hanuman Chalisa composed by saint Thulasidas.
19. Gadhyams
Gadhyam means prose . Some of the Vaishnavite saints    wrote prayers in prose  and the most famous is the Gadhya Thrayam written by Saint  Ramanuja
20.,Abhangs
These are prayers written in Marathi by those  great devotees of Pandharpur,
20. Mangalams
Mangalam means auspiciousness and thse are prayers which are sung at the end of chanting of prayer sessions as   the last prayer.

Dosha Pariharashtakam of Ayyaval

Dosha pariharashtam
(The octet  of antidote  to defects)

By
Sridhara  Ayyaval

Translated by
P.R.Ramachander

(The great  saint  Sridhara Ayyaval was the son Sri Sridhara Padmanabha who was a high ranking officer in the court of the king of Mysore.  He was offered the post of his father , when his father attained salvation and he rejected that  offer  as he was spiritually oriented and took his residence in Thiruvisainallur in the banks of river Cauvery. You can read about this great savant in http://www.sriayyaval.org/lsdetail.html . Here is a remarkable   stotra , where he   expresses  his views on those who only find the defect of others  and tells  us , what we should do to get rid of defects ourselves.  The devanagari original of the stotra can be found in http://www.sriayyaval.org/history/ayyval_works/Slokas/Doshapariharashtakam.pdf)

1.Anyasya   dosha ganana  kuthukam samethath,
AAvishkarothi   niyatham   mayi doshavathwam,
Dosha punarmayi   na chedakhile   satheese,
Dosha graham   kadhumudhethu  mamesa thasmin.

I  enjoy the counting of the defect of others,
And it makes clear that  I am one with defect,
Oh Lord Shiva , when all the  defects in the world are yourselves,
And  where does  your  defects lie , oh my God?

2.Yeshaa vyadhethara kruthethi   mamesa thasmin,
Kopo yadhi  svapara  kama mukha  prassootha,
Seyam  vydhethi mayi  may  na kadannu kopaa,
Swasya   vyadhaa   swa duritha prabhaavaa  hi sarvaa.

Oh God  , I complain that all my problems are created by others,
And if my anger  is   born due to my   defects like passion,
Why is it that,   I am not getting angry   at my problems,
And it is clear to me that all my problem are due  to my own defects.

3.Kama prabruthya akhila  dosha  nidher mamesha ,
Mayyaha   dosham ithi  ko nu  duragrahoi asmin,
Heyathwa maalapathi  yoayamalam   ne kena,
Vaaryodha   sathva vathi   soyam   masath kimaha.

Oh God , passion and other defects are  all the treasure  of my defects,
And why am I am getting angry when others talk of my defects ,
And they tell others not to come near me and what can I do about it,
As they have  not talked  about anything which is not in me.

4.Yas samsritha   swa hithadhir  vyasana athurasthath,
Doshasya  tham prathi  vaachoisthu  thadanya dosham,
Yaadhchmi  thanmama  na kim  kshathaye  swadosha,
Chinthaiva   may thadapanodha  phalo uchithaath.

Suppose someone approaches me to solve his sorrows and sufferings,
I can possibly point out to  him his defects  and more  defects,
And  will not pointing out defects of others lead  to my  fall due to my defects ,
And so I consider thinking about  my defects so that I can remove them , will be more apt.

5.Dosham parasya  nanugruhnathi  mayyanena,
Swathmaisha   yeva para gathra samahathena,
Durvasthuneva  Malini kriyathe  thadanya,
Dosha grahadahaha  kim na  nirvriuuthithavyam.

When I keep on thinking about the defects  of others,
All those defects , which are collected   from other people ,
Would become  the bad thing that   would dirty my mind,
And so   Why  should I collect   defects    from other persons?

6.Nirdosha bhaavam itharasya  sadoshabhavam,
Swasyami  savidhdhathi   para doshadhi men,
Aastham iyam   thadh itharaa  thu pararthi mathra,
Hethurvya anukthu na kadham  mama  thucha bhavam.

Having  a feeling that I do not have any defects  and feel that others have defects,
And   feeling they only have    all the defects
Causes  sorrow and worries    to all those  persons,
And is this not that   which  shows to  others my pettiness?

7.Padmadhi sourabha   iva  bramarasya harsha,
Hithvaa  anyadheeya sugune   punar anya doshe ,
Harsho durartha ivageha keete  kimasthe ,
Haa may kadhesa  krupayaavigalethsa  yeshaa.

The bee gets  joy due to the sweet smell of the lotus,
And like that if I see greatness of others  I should get joy,
And getting joy out  of defects of others is like the pig getting pleasure,
Out of the gutter  and Oh lord when shall I get rid of this  defect  by your blessing?

Translated   by
P.R.Ramachander

( I was made aware of this great stotra  by  Mr. Michael Janus, who is a German interested in Hinduism.  When I asked him why this stotra ,  he replied
“Since I read about Lord Skanda I feel a great affinity for Him. He likes to help unlucky people.
In zoroastrian religion He is the same deity called "Raschne Rast".
There are different stotras like kavachas for a Deva, but I guess each deity has only one known hRdayastotra, which, it seems, is the most dear one for the regarding Deva.”.My thanks to him.)

Jagannatha Sahasra nama stotram

Jagannatha Sahasra nama stotram

Translated by
P.R.Ramachander

(There was a great king called Indra Dhyumna in Orissa  who was a  great devotee of Lord Vishnu. One great scholar once told him about a very rare but extremely holy form of Lord Vishnu called Neela Madhava . The king send all his courtiers in search of this great form of Lord Vishnu . Excepot one minister called Vidhyapathi all of them failed Vidhyapathi with extreme difficulty located  Neela Madhava being worshipped by A gentleman called Vishvavasu belonging to a tribe called SAbara. On his information the king  Indra Dhyumna did reach the place where he found Neela Madhava  but was disappointed as he was not able to see the god there. However he was instructed by God Nila Madhava to construct a temple on the top of the Neeladri(Blue mountain)  and get a  a wooden statue of him consecrated there by Lord Brahma. The God instructed the king to collect the wodden piece sent by him to  carve out the idol of the god. It is believed God himself came in the form of an artist  to carve the statue. He instructed that  he should work alone and should not be disturbed. He said he would work inside the temple and the doors should be closed,. Unable to stifle his anxiety to see the God , the king one day opened the doors of the temple. The Statues of Krishna, Balabadra and Subadra   werenot completely finished and did not have legs and arms. The God ordered the king to worship him in that form only. This is the Lord Jagannatha  of Puri and this Sahasra Namam is written about him. But I could not see the one thousand names of the Lord in the Sahasra Namam. Or   study it   or   hear it.

2.SAhasraanaam sathenaiva yagnena paripoojathe,
Yath punyam sarva theertheshu vedeshu cha viseshatha.

Of sacrifices and  also greater than all sacred waters and reading of Vedas.

3.Thath punyam koti gunitham achiraal labhyathe nara ,
Jagannadhasya naamaani punyaani saphalaani cha.

And the man would get billion times   the effect of that
And  the blessed  names of Jagananadha  also would yield good results.

4.Vidhyarthi labhathe viudhyaam, yogarthi yogam aapnuyath,
