Shiva Ashtothram

Shiva Ashtothram
(108 names of Lord Shiva

Translated by
P.R.Ramachander

(Lord Shiva   is one of the  great trinity of Gods  along with Lord Vishnu   and Lord Brahma .  He is referred  in the Vedas  as Lord Rudra (indicating he was angry)  and in the post Vedic times  he is referred  to as Lord Shiva(indicating he was peaceful) , He has several forms,   the most popular being his yogic form in which he  has a matted  hair decorated by a moon, wearing an elephant hide, applying all over his body the  ashes of the cremation ground where he dances ,In addition   he ties a serpent on his neck. He has another form in which he has five faces , which are called Eeshana , Tatpurusha , Aghora  , Vamadeva   and sadhyojatha ,He has yet another form called Nataraja  , where Shiva does the  cosmic male dance called  Thandava . In addition to these forms  in South India he is also shown as Bhikshatana (In the form of a pretty  Beghgar), Sundara( As the consort of  Goddess Meenakshi of Madhurai), Sharabha( The form he took to scare  Lord Narasimha) , Somaskanda , Manjunatha  and so on. Inspite of several such forms, People worship him  generally as the  Shiva Linga form. Unlike most of the temples of other Gods , Shiva is consecrated alone  without his consort. People in south believe  that  we  should not make a    full round of  the sanctum sanctorum  of Shiva temples. They also believe that  we should not leave a temple of Lord Shiva without taking rest and  that we should not remove anything belonging  to the Shiva temple  to outside the temple.
He is  also   called as Visweshwara (Lord of universe)  , Mahadeva , Arunachala , Parameshwara  and   so on.He has two sons  Lord Ganesa  and Lord Subrahmanya.
Let us worship this God who is an ocean of mercy  and get his blessing)
