Known in
his Poorvashrama as Sri Kalyanarama Sastrigal of Angarai village (near
Tiruchi), fellow devotees of Kanchi Paramacharya used to refer to him even
before he took to Sanyas in July 1992 as `Angarai Periyava’ only and never by
his name. Though he had a big family to support and no other means of
livelihood, this savant from Angarai gave up his Central Government job 50
years ago and took to uninterrupted `seven-day’ recital of Srimad Bhagavatam
and Bhattadri’s Narayaneeyam in the forenoons followed by a discourse on it in
Tamil in the evenings on the suggestion of Kanchi Paramacharya and brought immense
relief and solace to families of countless devotees since then. From 1973 to
1991, he did this `Saptaha Parayanam’ preceding the auspicious Janmashtami
every year in the immediate presence of Kanchi Paramacharya. It was delightful
to see the Sage of Kanchi sitting nearby and listening to the discourses in
rapt attention, as if it were for the first time he was hearing the glories of
Lord Krishna!

get rid of problems faced by the common man called
MANTRA BOOKLET OF SRI GOVINDA DAMODARA SWAMIGAL ANGARAI PERIVA
Lots of people say that it is difficult to find true
saints these days and world is filled with only fake ones. This is far from
true. There have been people who lived amidst us, till very recently who were
the perfect epitome of sainthood. But they gave no publicity for themselves.
Media doesn't talk about them.
One such person, was Sri Govinda Damodara Swamigal who
was known as Angarai Periva or Triplicane Periyava. He was fortunate to deliver
lectures on Sri Ramayanam and Sri Bhagavatam in front of the Kanchi Maha
Perivaya for several years. Inspite of his severe financial difficulties, he
never charged for his lectures. He shed his mortal coil in 2004 and his Jeeva
Samadhi (Adhistanam) is there in Pazhoor near Trichy on way to Karur.
There is a small booklet (in Tamil) which contains very
simple mantras to be chanted for various problems like ill Health, Financial
Problems, Career Issues etc. Here is an english translation of the great
book.While Angarai periyava has given
only the manthras, I have added english meaning to all thise manthras.

Translated by
P.R.Ramachander
“ powerful lAngUlAstra stotra (the tail which is the
weapon) invokes Hanuman in his form as vIrAnjaneya. One should worship the
deity in a vigraha made of rakta-chandana, using red flowers and other
upachAras. Then the sAdhaka should recite the Stava once, thrice, seven or twenty-one
times sitting under an ashvattha tree. This process is repeated for forty-eight
days while keeping the vow of strict celibacy. By doing thus, all enemies of
the sAdhaka are mitigated by the grace of mAruti. Without indriya-nigraha,
undertaking such practices can prove to be dangerous.”

O Hanuman, son of Anjana and Vayu! You possess great
strength.
Liked by Rama, you are the friend of Arjuna, the great warrior of Mahabharata.
You are brown eyed and a boundless brave personality.
Crossing the sea, you removed Sita's grief.
You gave life to Laxmana. Driven out the pride of Ten-Headed Ravana.
All these are the twelve names of the great-souled monkey king Hanuman.
Whoever recites them daily morning and especially during the journeys,
There will be no death or fear to him and there will be victory always.

Adhi Sankara Bhagwat Pada

Deva raja sevya mana pavangri pankajam,
Vyala yagna suthra mindu shekaram krupakaram,
Naradadhi yogi vrundha vandhitham digambaram,
Kasika puradhi nadha Kalabhairavam bhaje. 1
I salute Kalabhairava, the lord of the city of Kasi,
Whose lotus like feet is being served by Devendra,
Who is merciful and wears the moon on his forehead ,
Who wears a snake as his sacred thread,
Who wears the different directions as his cloth,
And who is worshipped by sages like Narada.
Bhanu koti bhaswaram, bhavabdhi tharakam param,
Neelakanda meepsidartha dayakam trilochanam,
Kalakala mambujaksha maksha soola maksharam,
Kasika puradhi nadha Kalabhairavam bhaje. 2
I salute Kalabhairava, the lord of the city of Kasi,
Who shines like billions of suns,
Who helps us cross this miserable ocean of life,
Who is supreme and has a blue neck,
Who has three eyes and grants us our desires,
Who is the death to the God of death*,
Who has lotus flower like eyes,
Who has the undefeatable trident,
And who does not have decay.
* could also be translated as death to the time.
Soola tanga pasa danda pani madhi karanam,
Syama kaya madhi devamaksharam niramayam,
Bheema vikramam prabhum vichithra thandava priyam,
Kasika puradhi nadha Kalabhairavam bhaje. 3
I salute Kalabhairava, the lord of the city of Kasi,
Who has a spear, a chord and a stick as weapons,
Who is black in colour and the primeval cause,
Who is deathless and the first God,
Who is free from decay and ill health,
Who is the Lord who is a great hero,
And who likes the special vigorous thandava*
*dance with male’s vigorous movements. .

I salute Kalabhairava, the lord of the city of Kasi,
Who maintains the bridge of dharma in life,
Who destroys paths which are not right,

I salute Kalabhairava, the lord of the city of Kasi,
Who has feet adorned by the shine of gem studded sandals,
Who is eternal and does not have any one second to him,
Who is our favorite God who bestows everything,
Who takes away the fear of death from humans,
And who grants them salvation by his terrible teeth.
Attahasa binna padma janda kosa santhatheem,

Kasika puradhi nadha Kalabhairavam bhaje. 7
I salute Kalabhairava, the lord of the city of Kasi,
Whose loud roar is enough to destroy all those created by Brahma,
Whose sight is sufficient to destroy all sins,
Who is crafty and strict ruler,
Who can grant the eight occult powers,
And who wears the garland of skulls.
Bhootha sanga nayakam, vishala keerthi dayakam,

Who is the chief of the society of Bhoothas,
Who grants broad based fame,
Who is the lord who judges good and bad deeds,
Of those who live in Varanasi,
Who is an expert in the way of righteousness,
And who is eternally old and lord of the universe.
Kalabhairavashtakam patanthi yea manoharam,

Those who read this enticing octet on Kalabhairava,
Which is the source of eternal knowledge,
Which increases the effect of righteous deeds,
And which destroys grief, passion, poverty, want and anger,
Would surely reach the holy presence of Kalabhairava.

AlikulaVeneem,bhavaambudhi droneem,
Veena shuka sisu paaneem,
Natha geervaaneem, namami sarvaaneem. 1
I salute the goddess of all, who is the Goddess of speech,
Who has a sweet voice similar to lisping of a parrot.
Who has a crown of hair similar to bevy of bees,
Who is a boat which helps us to cross the ocean of misery,
Who holds a Veena and a baby parrot in her hands,
And who is being saluted by deva maidens.
Kuvalaya dala neelaangim,
Kuvalaa rakshaika deekshithaangim,
Lochanna vijitha kurangeem,
Mathangim , naumi Sankarardhangeem. 2
I salute the daughter of Mathanga, who shares half the body of Shiva,
Who is dark like the petal of the blue kuvalaya flowers,
Who has side long glance that protects earth,
And whose eye wins over the beauty of deer’s eyes,
Kamalaa kamalaja kaantha kara,
Saara sadatha kaantha kara kamalaam,
Kara yugala vidhrutha kamalaam,
Vimalaam, kamalaankuchudasa kala kalam. 3
I salute that goddess of purity,
Who is the soul of the greatness of he who wears the crescent,
Who has placed her very pretty lotus like hands
In the lotus like hands of Lakshmi and Saraswathi,
And who holds a lotus in both her hands.
Sundara hima kara vadanaam,
Kunda sura danaam mukunda nidhirasanaam,
Karunojjevitha madanaam,
Sura kusalayasureshu krutha kadanaam. 4
I salute her who for the sake of devas caused trouble to asuras,
Who has a very pretty face like the cool moon,
Who has teeth which resembles a row of jasmine buds,
Who is the power behind Lord Vishnu,
And who by her mercy gave life back to the God of love.
Arunadharajitha bimbaam,
Jagadambaam gamana vijitha kaadambam,
Paalitha sujana kaadambham,
Pradula nithambaam, bhaje saherambhaam. 5
I salute that mother of everyone,
Who wins the bimba fruits by her reddish lips.
Who wins the swan by her pretty gait,
Who takes care of the good of the world,
And who has a very pretty wide middle.
Saranaagatha jana bharanaam,
Karuna varunaalayam, nava varanaam,

Who is clad in new cloths,
And who wears ornaments fully inlaid with gems.
Thungashana jitha kumbhaam,
Krutha pari rambhaam, siveena gruha dimbaam,
Daaritha shumbha nishumbhaam,
Narthitha rambhaam, puro vigatha dambhaam. 7
I salute her who punishes the pride of Rambha by her dance,
Who has breasts which win the war against big pots,
Who is the mother of Lord Subrahmanya,
Who is embraced by Lord Shiva,
And who killed Shumbha and Nishumbha.
Sura jana rakshaa dakshaam,
Prathyaksha daivathadhyakshaam,
Vaheeka krutha haryakshaam,
Kshapitha vipakshaam, sureshu kruth rakshaam. 8

And who rides on the lion.
Danyam sura varamaanyam,

Vihrutha sura dhruma vanyaam,
Vedmi vinaa thwaamna devatha swanyam. 9

Who is respectable, who is worshipped by Devas,
Who is the daughter of the Ice Mountain,
Who is the greatest among three worlds,
And who wanders in the forest of the trees of devas.

Mangalyadasthu mama mangala devathaya. 1
To the Hari who wears supreme happiness as Ornament,
The Goddess Lakshmi is attracted,
Like the black bees getting attracted,
To the unopened buds of black Tamala tree,
Let her who is the Goddess of all good things,
Grant me a glance that will bring prosperity.
Mugdha muhurvidhadhadathi vadhane Murare,
Premathrapapranihithani gathagathani,
Mala dhrishotmadhukareeva maheth pale ya,
Sa ne sriyam dhisathu sagarasambhavaya. 2
Again and again return ,those glances,
Filled with hesitation and love,
Of her who is born to the ocean of milk,
To the face of Murari ,
Like the honey bees to the pretty blue lotus,
And let those glances shower me with wealth.
Ameelithaksha madhigamya mudha Mukundam
Anandakandamanimeshamananga thanthram,
Akekara stiththa kaninika pashma nethram,
Bhoothyai bhavenmama bhjangasayananganaya. 3
With half closed eyes stares she on Mukunda ,
Filled with happiness , shyness and the science of love,
On the ecstasy filled face with closed eyes of her Lord,
And let her , who is the wife of Him who sleeps on the snake,
Shower me with wealth.

He who has won over Madhu ,
Wears the Kousthuba as ornament,
And also the garland of glances, of blue Indraneela ,
Filled with love to protect and grant wishes to Him,
Of her who lives on the lotus,
And let those also fall on me,
And grant me all that is good..
Kalambudhaalithorasi kaida bhare,
Dharaadhare sphurathi yaa thadinganeva,
Mathu samastha jagatham mahaneeya murthy,

Like the streak of lightning in black dark cloud,
She is shining on the dark , broad chest,
Of He who killed Kaidaba ,
And let the eyes of the great mother of all universe,
Who is the daughter of Sage Bharghava ,
Fallon me lightly and bring me prosperity.
Praptham padam pradhamatha khalu yat prabhavath,
Mangalyabhaji madhu madhini manamathena,
Mayyapadetha mathara meekshanardham,
Manthalasam cha makaralaya kanyakaya. 6
The God of love could only reach ,
The killer of Madhu ,
Through the power of her kind glances,
Loaded with love and blessing
And let that side glance ,
Which is auspicious and indolent,
Fall on me.
Viswamarendra padhavee bramadhana dhaksham,
Ananda hethu radhikam madhu vishwoapi,
Eshanna sheedhathu mayi kshanameekshanartham,
Indhivarodhara sahodharamidhiraya 7
Capable of making one as king of Devas in this world,
Her side long glance of a moment,
Made Indra regain his kingdom,
And is making Him who killed Madhu supremely happy.
And let her with her blue lotus eyes glance me a little.
Ishta visishtamathayopi yaya dhayardhra,
Dhrishtya thravishta papadam sulabham labhanthe,
Hrishtim prahrushta kamlodhara deepthirishtam,
Pushtim krishishta mama pushkravishtaraya. 8
To her devotees and those who are great,
Grants she a place in heaven which is difficult to attain,
Just by a glance of her compassion filled eyes,
Let her sparkling eyes which are like the fully opened lotus,
Fall on me and grant me all my desires.
Dhadyaddhayanupavanopi dravinambhudaraam,
Asminna kinchina vihanga sisou vishanne,

Kalambudhaalithorasi kaida bhare,
Dharaadhare sphurathi yaa thadinganeva,
Mathu samastha jagatham mahaneeya murthy,
Badrani me dhisathu bhargava nandanaya 5
Like the streak of lightning in black dark cloud,
She is shining on the dark , broad chest,
Of He who killed Kaidaba ,
And let the eyes of the great mother of all universe,
Who is the daughter of Sage Bharghava ,
Fallon me lightly and bring me prosperity.
Praptham padam pradhamatha khalu yat prabhavath,
Mangalyabhaji madhu madhini manamathena,
Mayyapadetha mathara meekshanardham,
Manthalasam cha makaralaya kanyakaya. 6
The God of love could only reach ,
The killer of Madhu ,
Through the power of her kind glances,
Loaded with love and blessing
And let that side glance ,
Which is auspicious and indolent,
Fall on me.

Ananda hethu radhikam madhu vishwoapi,
Eshanna sheedhathu mayi kshanameekshanartham,
Indhivarodhara sahodharamidhiraya 7
Capable of making one as king of Devas in this world,
Her side long glance of a moment,
Made Indra regain his kingdom,
And is making Him who killed Madhu supremely happy.
And let her with her blue lotus eyes glance me a little.

Dhadyaddhayanupavanopi dravinambhudaraam,
Asminna kinchina vihanga sisou vishanne,
Dhushkaramagarmmapaneeya chiraya dhooram,
Narayana pranayinee nayanambhuvaha. 9
Please send your mercy which is like wind,
And shower the rain of wealth on this parched land,,

Hanumath Pancha Rathnam
(Five gems on Hanuman)

Translated by

Veethakhila vishayecham, Jathanandaasru pulakamathyacham,
Seethapathi dhoothakhyam ,Vathathmajamadhya bhavaye hrudhyam. 1
I think about the son of Vayu in my mind,
Who is devoid of all desires of enjoyment,
Who sheds copious tears of joy,
Whose hair stands erect at His thought,
And who is the great emissary of the Lord of Sita
Tharunaruna Muka kamalam , karuna rasa poora poorithapangam,
Saajeevanamaasase manjula mahimana manjana Bhagyam. 2
All my life I yearn to see that Hanuman,
Who is the good fortune of Anjana,
Whose face is as red as the rising Sun,
Whose glances are full of the mercy,
Who brought back the dead in the battle,
And whose fame is great.
Sambhara vairi saradhigamambudala vipula lochanadhaaram,
Kambu gala niladishtam bimba jwalithoshta mekamalambhe 3
My only refuge is Hanuman,
Who had reddish lips like the Bimba fruit,
Who is the enemy of the arrows of Manmatha,
Who has broad eyes like lotus leaves,
And whose neck is like a conch.
Dhoorikrutha seetharthi , prakati krutha rama vaibhava spohoorthi,
Daritha dasa mukha keerthi, puratho mama bhathu Hanumatho Murthy. 4
Let the form of Hanuman ,
Which drove away the sorrow of Sita,
Which made known the prowess of Rama,
And which destroyed the fame of ten headed Ravana,
Shine before me.
Vanara nikaradhyaksham, dhanava kula kumudha ravikara sadruksham,
Dheena janavana dheeksham pavana paka ambuja madraksham. 5
I Saw Lord Hanuman,
Who is the result of penance of God of wind,
Who is the leader of all monkeys,
Who is similar to the Sun God to water lily,
To the hoards of Rakshasas,
And who is he protector of the suffering humans.
Ethath pavana suthasya stotram,
Ya patathi pancha rathnakhyam,
Chiramiha nikhilan bhogan bhukthwa,
Sri Rama Bhakthiman Bhavathi.
He who reads these five gems,
Which are the poems of praise of,
The son of God of wind,
Would become a devotee of Lord Rama,
And would enjoy his life for a long time.

The Swami
frequently used to mention to his devotees of the great prayer called
“Sikshashtakam” by Sri Chaithanya Maha Prabhu. It deals mainly about the
greatness of chanting God’s name

(Lord Chaithanya who was very great scholar right from
his youth,
is believed to have not written many prayers in his great
life,
of extreme devotion to Lord Krishna. This great octet is
the only one
written by him and are believed to contain the essence of
all his teaching.)
Cheto darpana marjanam bhava maha davagni nirvapanam,
Shreyah kairava chandrika vitaranam Vidya vadhujivanam,
Anandambuhdhi vardhanam pratipadam purnamrita asvadanam,
Sarvatmasnapanam param vijayate shrikrishnasankirtanam.
1
Victory to the singing of the names of Krishna,
Which cleans the dirt from the mirror of the heart,
Which puts out the fire of the pain of day today life,
Which spreads the cooling rays of moon everywhere,
Which is the knowledge accumulated by the holy,
Which increases the sea of happiness for ever,
Which makes us taste , fully the divine nectar,
And which is eagerly desired by all beings.
Namnam akari bahudha nija sarvashakti
Statrarpita niyamitah smarane na kalaha
Etadrishi tava kripa bhagavan mamapi
durdaivam idrisham ihajani
nanuragahah
2
You have several millions of names,
Which can give real strength to all beings,
And you do not have any rules to chant them,
And this shows me that you are merciful towards me,
But I being unfortunate am not attracted by them.
Trinad api sunicena
Taror api sahishnuna
Amanina manadena
Kirtaniyah sada
harihi
3
We should constantly sing the names of Hari,
With more humility than a dried grass,
With more tolerance than a tree,
And with a mind without false prestige.
Na dhanam na janam na sundarim
Na dhanam na janam na sundarim
Kavitam va jagad-isha kamaye
Mama janmani janmanishvare
Bhavatad bhaktir ahaituki
tvayi.
4
I do not wish for wealth or followers,
I do not wish for pretty women,
Oh Lord of the entire universe,
But I want to dedicate this life,
And all life after it is in your service.
Ayi nanda-tanuja kinkaram
Patitam mam vishame bhavambudhau
Kripaya tava pada-pankaja-
Sthita dhulisadrisham
vichintaya
5
I am your slave, Oh son of Nanda,
But have fallen deep in this sea of birth and death,
So please pick me up from here,
And make me in to a dust of,
Your lotus like feet.
Nayanam galad-ashru-dharaya
Vadanam gadgada-ruddhaya gira
Pulakair nichitam vapuh kada
Tava nama-grahane
bhavishyati
6
When will tears fall form my eyes,
When will my face choke up,
And when will my hairs stand erect,
When I hear the recitation of your names.
Yugayitam nimeshena
Chakshusha pravrishayitam
Shunyayitam jagat sarvam
Govinda-virahena
mey.
7
When I am not with you Govinda,
Every minute appears like an age,
My eyes shed tears like rain,
And the entire world appears empty.
Ashlishya va pada-ratam pinashtu mam
Adarshanan marma-hatam karotu va
Yatha tatha va vidadhatu lampato
Mat-prana-nathas tu sa eva naparaha
8
My soul will be with him without condition,
Even if he chides me with dirty words,
Even if he breaks my heart by not being with me,
And do as he likes anything and everything.
Wonderful. Salutation to lord ofthe universe who let me have these mantras through Iyerji.
ReplyDeleteSir... i have been searching for the correct meaning of angarai periavas small line which he has advised to chant many times a day.
ReplyDeleteIs it
“Aparajitha Pingaksha Namasthe Rama
poojitha"
“Aparajitha Pingaksha Namasthe Raja
poojitha"
If its RAMA POOJITA.. does it mean one who is adored respected by rama
But in this page you have given one who worships rama.
In another place.. its given as RAJA POOJITA
MAY I KNOW WHICH IS RIGHT
ANGARAI PERIAVA as far as i know as told rama poojita.
