Paramathma  Ashtakam

The octet of divine  God

परमात्मंस्तव प्राप्तौ कुशलोऽस्मि न संशयः ।
तथापि मे मनो दुष्टं भोगेषु रमते सदा ॥१॥

 

Paramathma   sthwam  praprthai   kusalosmi  na  samsaya

Thadhaapi  may  mano  dushtam  bhogeshu  ramathaa  sadhaa

 

Oh Divine God , by reaching you I would be happy  without any doubt

In spite of that  my evil  mind always would  be entertained by  passion

 

यदा यदा तु वैराग्यं भोगेभ्यश्च करोम्यहम् ।
तदैव मे मनो मूढं पुनर्भोगेषु गच्छति ॥२॥ 

 

Yadhaa yadhaa  thu  vairagyam   bhogebhyascha  karomyaham

Thadaiva   may mano   moodam  punar  bhogeshu  gachathi

 

As and when I determined   to indifferent  to passion,

At that  time  my foolish mind, again   goes towards  passion

 

भोगान्भुक्त्वा मुदं याति मनो मे चञ्चलं प्रभो ।
तव स्मृति यदा याति तदा याति बहिर्मुखम् ॥३॥ 

 

Bhogaan bhukthwaa  mudham yaathi  mano may chanchalam prabho,

Thava  smruthi tyadhaa  yaathi thadhaa yaathi bahirmukham

 

Oh Lord  after my mind becomes happy  after  engaging in passion,

My mind   becomes  infirm

As and when and where your thought comes, then comes, indifference

 

प्रत्यहं शास्त्रनिचयं चिन्तयामि समाहितः ।
तथापि मे मनो मूढं त्यक्त्वा त्वां भोगमिच्छति ॥४॥ 

 

Prathyaham   sasthra  nichayam   chinthayaami  samaahitha

Thadhaapi may  mano moodam  thyakthwaa thwaam  bhogamichathi

 

Every time  I start   thinking of   collection   of sastras  ,

Then my  foolish mind , leaving you  desires  for passion

 

शोकमोहौ मानमदौ तवाज्ञानाद्भवन्ति वै ।
यदा बुद्धिपथं यासि यान्ति ते विलयं तदा ॥५॥ 

 

Soka mohaou maana madhou  thavaa aajnaandh   bhavanthi vai

Yadhaa  budhi padham yaasi   yaanthi   they  vilayam  sadhaa

 

Sorrow , passion , self respect, happen   at  present  due to ignorance of you

If I take   the path of wisdom , they get destroyed   forever

 

कृपां कुरु तथा नाथ त्वयि चित्तं स्थिरं यथा ।
मम स्याज्ज्ञानसंयुक्तं तव ध्यानपरायणम् ॥६॥

 

Krupaam kuru thadhaa naadhaa thwayi  chitham  sthiram yadhaa

Mama syaa  jnana  samyuktham thava dhyana  paraynam

 

Oh  Lord please take mercy on me and  me present forever  in my mind

Perhaps   along  with my wisdom, I may be busy in meditating on you

 

मायया ते विमूढोऽस्मि न पश्यामि हिताहितम् ।
संसारापारपाथोधौ पतितं मां समुद्धर ॥७॥

 

Maayayaa   they vimoodosmi na  pasyaami  hitha hitham

Samsarraa paara padhodhow  pathitham maam  samudhara

 

Due  to illusion  I am not able to see  what  is proper and improper

On my trial  to cross   the Samsara, I   fall  in to ocean of samsara

 

परमात्मंस्त्वयि सदा मम स्यान्निश्चला मतिः ।
संसारदुःखगहनात्त्वं सदा रक्षको मम॥८॥ 

 

Paramathmam   sthwayee sadhaa  mama syannischalaa mathi

Samsara  dukha gahanaa , thwam  sadhaa  rakshako  mama

 

Perhapa   you  God   can always  keep my mind  stable

In the deep sorrow  of Samsara, you are always my protector

 

परात्मन इदं स्तोत्रं मोहविच्छेदकारकम् ।
ज्ञानदं च भवेन्नृणां योगानन्देन निर्मितम् ॥९॥ 

 

This prayer  to the supreme God will cause  to cut off from passion

This which grants  wisdom and cuts of fate is  composed by  Yoganda

 

इति श्रीयोगानन्दतीर्थविरचितं परमात्माष्टकं संपूर्णम् ॥
