Does caste of a child depend on mother or father?

A few years back a high court of our country decided that caste of a child depends on caste of the father.
WE will take only the case of Sage Vyasa who collected the Vedas , edited them and divided in to four books
Sage Vyasa himself was the son of sage Parashara and Mathya Gandhi – a fisher woman –But he was considered as a brahmin and he was permitted to edit Vedas.
Because of this we think the caste of son is determined by that of father
But Sage Vyasa himself had four children
1. Brahmin wife -sage Shuka(Brahmin)
2. Kshatriya lady -Dritharashtra(Kshatriya )
3. Kshatriya lady-Pandu (kshatriya)
4. Shudra lady -Vidhura (Shudra)
Proving that that his caste was determined by his father, the caste of his children was determined by their mother’s caste
