(Nandi in the form of a bull is the Vahana of Lord Shiva. He was son of a
saint called Silada. Saint Silada wanted
an immortal son and did Thapas addressed to Lord Shiva for one thousand years.
The Lord granted his wish and wanted him
to do a Yaga as a prelude it.When he ploughed the land from that land came a
boy with three eyes and resembling Lord Shiva. His body was covered by an an
armour made of diamonds ,However the
astrologers told that Nandi would have short life.Nandi then did thapas aimed
at Shiva who appeared before him and
gave him necklace , wearing which Nandi became immortal.Lord Shiva made him his Vahana and told that he would
be always worshipped along with
Shiva. He could take a form of a bull
while carrying Shiva and take a man –bull form at other times. He is considered
as the chief of Lord Shiva’s army and the head Guru of all Sidhas. In several
places huge statues of Nandi as a bull
has been made and are worshipped. Devotees of Shiva believe that , if their
wants are told in Nandi’s ears, He would
tell it to Lord Shiva and their wishes would be fulfilled. He is of pure white
colour.
