Garland  of  prayers  to Lord Muruga

(Kunnakudi Shanmughanathar temple (also called Kunnakudi Temple or Kunnakudi Murugan Temple) in Kundrakudi, a village in the outskirts of Karaikudi in Sivaganga district in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu , is dedicated to the Hindu god Murugan. Constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture, the temple is located in the Tirupattur - Karaikudi Road, around 14 km (14,000 m) from Karaikudi. There are three caves located on the western side of the lower rock, that has rock-cut shrines from the Pandyan Empire from the 8th century. The caves have the earliest sculptural representation of Dvarapalas, the guardian deities, for any South Indian temple.

This great prayer  on Lord Muruga  of that temple   was written  by  late  Sri Venkatrama  BHagawathar who was a musician   as well as  Hari Katha  Exponent who was blind He has written very many prayersa,This prayer  is supposed  to be sung  in the tune  of the famous Ayigiri Nandini prayer.

This great prayer was brought to my notice  by my friend Karaikudi Mani  Bhagawathar, Thousand thanks to him) 

1) கந்தனே செந்தாமரைமலர் பாதனே கருணை வடிவாய் நின்றவனே ! கைதொழவே வரம் தந்தருள் புரிவாய் கலியுகவரதா வடிவேலா !! சுந்தரவனமதில் வேடனாய் தருவாய் வ்ருத்தனாய் வள்ளியைமணந்தவனே ! ஜெயஜெய சங்கர குமார குருபர குன்றக்குடிவளர் குமரேசா!!

Kandhane  , chenthamarai  malar  padhane, Karunai  vadivai  nindravane,

Kai thozhave varam   thanthu arul  purivai, kali yuga varadhaa, vadi vela,

Sundara vanamathil vedanaai  tharuvai  vruthanai, valliyai  maNanthavane,

Jaya Jaya  Sankara, Kumara  Gurupara  Kundra  Kudi  valar  Kumaresa.

Oh Skandha  who has  lotus like feet, who stood as   form of kindness,

When I salute you, Please give me boons  and blessme , Oh Lord who grants  boons in Kali age, Oh Vadivela,

As a hunter  in the pretty forest and as an old person  You married  Valli,

Hail , hail  , Sankara, Kumaresa Of  Kundrakudi of  Kumara  Gurupara.

2) அலை கடல் போலவே சங்கம் முழங்கி படையுடன் வந்து போர் செய்த ,

அடமிகு சூரன் சிரமதைத் துணித்த ஆறெழுத்துண்மை பொருளோனே!
திடமுடன் பணிவார் சித்தம் இனித்திடும் தேனே தெள்ளமுதப்பெருக்கே !,
ஜெயஜெய சங்கர குமாரகுருபர குன்றக்குடி வளர் குமரேசா !!

Alai kadal  Polave  sangam muzhangi   padayudan   vandhu  Por cheitha,

Adamigu  Sooran  Sirathai   thunitha aarezhuthu  unmai  Porulone,

Thidamudan  panivar  chitham inithidum  thene , Thellamudha perukke,

Jaya Jaya  Sankara, Kumara  Gurupara  Kundra  Kudi  valar  Kumaresa.

The  greatly proud Soora   came  Booming  the conch and marching with  ann army  like an ocean with waves,

And Oh Lord   who is the real meaning  of six lettered Manthra  you  cut off his head,

Oh honey who makes the mind  of those  who comes and salute you strongly , oh  spring of pure  nectar,

Hail , hail  , Sankara, Kumaresa Of  Kundrakudi of  Kumara  Gurupara.

3)தந்தையான ஜகதீஸருக்கு உயர் மந்திரம் அதனை விந்தையாக

சிந்தை குளிர உபதேசம் செய்த சுந்தர மன்மத சுகுமாரா !

வெந்துயர் வாத பித்தமொடு பல வயிற்றினில் உறைந்திடும் பிணி தீர்ப்பாய் , ஜெயஜெய சங்கர குமாரகுருபர குன்றக்குடி வளர்குமரேசா !!

THanthayaana  Jagadheesaruku  uyar manthiram , athanai  Vinthayaaka,

Chinthai   kulira   upadhesam cheitha  sundara  manmatha  sukumara,

Venthuyar vatha  pithamodu pala  vayithinil  urainthidum  PIni  Theerppai,

Jaya Jaya  Sankara, Kumara  Gurupara  Kundra  Kudi  valar  Kumaresa.

To your father  who was the God of the universe  you taught  in a magical manner,

So that his mind gets pleased Oh Pretty  Sukumara,

Please cure  very many diseases  caused by  Vatha  and Pitha  in many abdomens,

Hail , hail  , Sankara, Kumaresa Of  Kundrakudi of  Kumara  Gurupara.

4) ரவிகுல தசரன் மகனாய்வந்து ராவணனை யொழித்தாதரித்த,

 புவிபுகழ் கோதண்டராமன் மனம் மகிழ் புனித மருமகன் ஆனவனே! வெவ்வினை தீர்த்திடும் விக்ன வினாயகன் சோதர ஞானக்ருபாகரனே, ஜெயஜெய சங்கர குமாரகுருபர குன்றக்குடி வளர் குமரேசா !!

Ravi kula  Dasaran  makanaai  vanthu   Ravananai  ozhithaatharitha,

Puvi pugazh  kodandaraman manam magizh punitha  marumakaan   aanavane,

Vevvinnai  theerthidum  vigna  vinayagan  sodhara  jnana  krupakarane,

Jaya Jaya  Sankara, Kumara  Gurupara  Kundra  Kudi  valar  Kumaresa.

You who became  the divine nephew  who  pleased the  mind  of world famous,

Kodanda  Rama who was  born as   son of Dasaratha and   destroyed  Ravana,

The wise  merciful one who is the brother of  Ganesa who removes b;lockages  and accumulated Karma,

Hail , hail  , Sankara, Kumaresa Of  Kundrakudi of  Kumara  Gurupara.

5) முருகனுக்கிணையாய் மற்றொரு தெய்வம் மூவுலகம் தனில் உண்டோ சொல் ! தருணம் அறிந்து மெய் அடியவர்க்கு அருள் தந்தருள் புரியும் தயாபரனே !!

உருகி குகா என்று ஒருதரம் உரைப்பவர் உளம்தனில் நின்றருள் நடம் புரியும், ஜெயஜெய சங்கர குமார குருபர குன்றக்குடி வளர் குமரேசா !!

Muruganukku   inayaai mathoru deivam  moovulakam  thanil undo chol,

Tharunam   arinthu  mei adiyavarkku arul thantharul   puriyum  Dayaparane,

Uruki Guhaa  yendru oru tharam  uraippavar   ulam thanil nindru arul   nadam puriyum,

Jaya Jaya  Sankara, Kumara  Gurupara  Kundra  Kudi  valar  Kumaresa.

In these three worlds  is there any God    who is  comparable  to Lord  Muruka,

Oh kin d one who blesses and grants your grace to devotees, seeing the proper time,

To those who with a melted mind call Muruka, you live in their  mind  and dance ,

6) வாசமலர் கொண்டு நின் திருமலரடி பூஜித்தனுதினம் புகழ்ந்திடவே,

நேசமுடன் பவ பாசம் அகன்றிட, நீவரம் மீதெனக்கு ஈந்தருள்வாய் !

காசினி அனைத்தும் காத்தருள் புரியும் கருணை வாரிதி நீயன்றோ ,

ஜெயஜெய சங்கர குமாரகுருபர குன்றக்குடிவளர் குமரேசா !!

Vaasa  malar  kondu  nin  thirumalaradi   poojithu anudhinam  pugazhnthidave,

Nesamudan bhava  pasam akandrida , neevaram meethenukku yeentharulvai,

Kasini  anaithum  katharul   puriyum Karunai   vaaridhi  neeyandro,

Jaya Jaya  Sankara, Kumara  Gurupara  Kundra  Kudi  valar  Kumaresa.

To   worship your divine feet   with  perfumed  flowers daily    and to praise you,

To get removed love  towards Karma  with friendliness, You bless   grant me   a boon,

Are you not   the ocean of mercy who protects     the entire   world,

7) திருப்பரங்குன்றம், திருத்தணிகை, உயர் சுவாமிமலை பழமுதிர்சோலை ,திருச்செந்தூர், திரு ஆவினன்குடி முதல் குன்றுகளில் உறை குமரோனே! மறலியின் தூதுவர் கொடுமையுடன்வந்து வருத்திடாதிருக்க நீ வரம் தருவாய் ஜெயஜெய சங்கர குமாரகுருபர குன்றக்குடிவளர் குமரேசா !!

THiruparam kundram ,Thiruthanigai , uyar  Swami malai , Pazhamuthir solai.

THiruchenthur, Thiruavinan kudi   mudhal   kundrukalil  urai  Kumarone,

Maraliyin  thoothuvar   kodumayudan vanthu  varuthidathirukka   , nee varam  tharuvai,

Jaya Jaya  Sankara, Kumara  Gurupara  Kundra  Kudi  valar  Kumaresa.

Oh Kumara who is in hills like  THiruparamkundram , Thiruthani , the tall Swamimalai,

Pazhamuthirsolai,  Thiruchenthur   and  Pazhani

For the  emissaries of lord Yama not to come cruelly  , Please give me boon,

8 ) அல்லல் படுத்தும் பலபல பேய்கள் ,பில்லியொடு பல சூனியங்கள் ,

நில்லாது அகன்றிட நீ அருள் புரிவாய் நிகிலம் துதிக்கும் ஸ்ரீமாநே,

வல்லவனே மயில்வாகனனே , திறல் தாரகாசுரன் சிரம் துணித்தாய்,

ஜெயஜெய சங்கர குமார குருபர குன்றக்குடி வளர் குமரேசா !!

Allal  paduthum  pala pala peikal , Billiyodu pala sooniyangal,

Nilathu  agandrida nee arul purivai , nikilam thuthikkum Srimaane,

Vallavane  Mayil Vaakanane, Thiral  Tharakasuran siram  nee  thunithai,

Jaya Jaya  Sankara, Kumara  Gurupara  Kundra  Kudi  valar  Kumaresa.

Several ghosts   which give  trouble, very many  black magic tricks,

For not staying but go away , please bless me, Oh Lord   who is praised by the universe,

Oh strong God , Oh Lord who rides on peacock, you cut off the   very able  Tharakasura,

9) அம்பிகை சாம்பவி அகிலாண்டேஸ்வரி, துன்பம் தவிற்கும் ,

சிவகௌரி, ஆதிபராசக்தி அருமை பாலா, அன்பர்தமக்கு அனுகூலா !

வம்புசெய் க்ரௌஞ்ச மலை உரம் பிளந்திட , வடிவேல் தன்னை விடுத்தோனே ,

ஜெயஜெய சங்கர குமார குருபர குன்றக்குடி வளர் குமரேசா !!

Ambigai  , saambhavi  , akhilandeswari  , thunbam thavirkkum.,

Shivagauri, AAdhi parasakthi   arumai  Balaa, Anbar thamakku anukoolaa,

Vambu  chei   Krouncha malai    uram pilanthida, vadivel  thannai  viduthone,

Jaya Jaya  Sankara, Kumara  Gurupara  Kundra  Kudi  valar  Kumaresa.

Oh dear   son of Goddess  Ambika, Saabhavi , Akhilandeswari , The  Shiva Gauri,

Who  removes   sorrows and Primeval   divine Sakthi, Oh God who is partial   to devotees,

Who sent Vadivel   to  split   the  Krouncha  mountain   which was creating trouble,

Hail , hail  , Sankara, Kumaresa Of  Kundrakudi of  Kumara  Gurupara.

10) நெஞ்சம் கனிந்து நினப்பவர் தம்முன், செஞ்சிலம்பணிந்து

மாமயிலேறி, அஞ்சாதே என்று ஆறுதல் சொல்ல , குஞ்சரியுடனே வருவாயே ! தஞ்சமென வந்த இந்த்ராதி தேவர் வெஞ்சிறை அகற்றி அருள் செய்தாய், ஜெயஜெய சங்கர குமார குருபர குன்றக்குடி வளர் குமரேசா !!

Nenjam  kaninthu  ninappavar  thammun  chenchilam    paninthu ,

Maamayileri  anjaathe   yendru aaruthal cholaa, kunjariyudan varuvaaye,

Thanjamena  vantha  Indraathi devar  venchirai  agathi arul cheithai.

Jaya Jaya  Sankara, Kumara  Gurupara  Kundra  Kudi  valar  Kumaresa.

Before  those  who stand    with a  paining heart, wearing the red anklet,

Climbing on   the huge  peacock you come with kindness to tell , “do not  be afraid”

You   removed the prison    to Indra  and  other Devas  who came telling “protect us”

11) பெருங்கடல் தன்னைக் கரம்தன்னில் ஏந்தி அருந்திய கும்ப முனிவருக்கு , அருமையுடந் உபதேசமது செய்த , பெருமைமிகுந்த பெருமானே !

மறைகள் நான்கும் தேடிக்காணாத மாமகள் வள்ளி மணவாளா ,

 ஜெய ஜெய சங்கர குமார குருபர குன்றக்குடி வளர் குமரேசா !!

Perum kadal thannai  karam thannil  yenthi  arunthiya  , Kumbha munivarkku,

Arumayudan   upadesamathu   cheitha. Perumai migundha perumaane,

Maraikal   naankum  thedi kaanaatha Mamakal  valli manaalaa,

Jaya Jaya  Sankara, Kumara  Gurupara  Kundra  Kudi  valar  Kumaresa.

To sage Agasthya who took the huge sea   in his hand   and drank,

You   with  love gave advices , Oh Lord   who is filled  with greatness,

Oh Husband of Valli   who  could not be seen by four Vedas   in spite of Search,

12) ரத்தின கதிர்மலி மௌலி யிலங்கிட, சக்தியருள் வடி வேலுடனும் ,

ரத்தினக் கோவை மார்பினில் விளங்கிட , சித்தர் அமரர் துதித்திடவே ,

பக்தர்கள் குறைதனை தீர்த்தருள் புரிய இத்தருணம் வந்து ஆதரிப்பாய் ஜெயஜெய சங்கர குமார குருபர குன்றக்குடி வளர் குமரேசா !!

Rathina  kathirmali  mauli ilangida, Sakthiyarul   vadi  veludanum,

Rathina  kovai  marbinil  vilangida, Chithar  amarar  thuthithadave ,

Bhaktharkal   kurai  thanai   theerthu arul puriya, itharunam   vanthu  aadarippai,

Jaya Jaya  Sankara, Kumara  Gurupara  Kundra  Kudi  valar  Kumaresa.

With crown studded  with gems   shiningalong  The Vadi  Vel  blessed  by Sakthi,

With gem studded  lines  shining  on your chest, and with  Sidhas  and devas  praising,

To bless  and  remove   the problems of your devotees, You  come  now   and help them,

This garland  of prayers on Muruga  said with love  by the devotee, Venkatasan,

Consisting of twelve verses if chanted  or sung  daily without forgetting  by devotees,
