Kulashekara  Azhvar’s   Triology   on Ramayana

Kula shekara  Azhvar  was  a great  Vaishnavite  saint  who was   a king  of the chera country. Kulashekara Azhwar (Called Kula shekara perumal in Kerala) was also called Mudaliyandan Nambi . He was one of the 12 sages of the Bhakthi cult of Vaishnavism called Azhwars.These sages were the minstrels of God who traveled from place to place and sang the praise of Lord Vishnu

Altogether  They wrote  4000 verses  on 108  Vishnu temples in India, These  temples  are called Dhivya desams and  the collection of all the 4000  verses  is called “Nalayira Dhivya prabhandham”  Among them Kula Shekara azhvar wrote  a book called  “Perumal Thirumozhi” . It has  10  sections.  Among these  the last three  sections deal   with Ramayana

1,  Section 8. This section deals with   the  baby Rama and how his mother  would have sung a lullaby on him

2, Section 9 deals with Dasaratha’s sorrow  of parting  with Rama , after he   went to the forest

3.Section 10   deals with a summary of Ramayana  up to uthara kanda  and in each verse  he praises the God of Thiruchitra kutam of Thillai nagar. This is the swami Govindaraja temple  in chidambaran. The poet imagines   that  Rama is the god in the temple   and becomes  very sentimental.

AS usual  among Vaishnavite   stotras, there  are two poems(thaniyan)  praising about  the poet  Kulasekhara  Azwar   and they have been written by two great  saints themselves.

The great devotee perumal   who can sing about  the Srirangam of south

The king who had eye brows similar to the  desirable bow, the king  of chera  dynasty

Dealing with  conspiracy of ministers, and knowing  that,  the devotees of Vishnu will  not touch other’s property,

He who did    favour to them when  he introduced  his hand in a pot of snake, and by this action

He  made their conspiracy useless and this is  the the king with staff guarding  the city of kolli

The Chera  called Kulasekhara, the head gem   of crowned kings

The  forehead  with the luster of  shining   gems

With  thousand  complete   pictures of the couple

The  greatly lustrous anantha, the king of snakes,

Fixing the very pretty   white  bed  at a height

The Cauvery river with  clear  water in  city of Srirangam,

Massaging his  feet   with  its divine  hand like waves

Witnesses   The black  gem , the pretty one

When will my eye lids   see  him and enjoy

The fire spit by  the incomparable thousand  mouths  full of prayers

Of the  fire like snake  with a bent body is like the  upper part

Of the  divine hair of lord always decorated by flower,

And stands  spread   every where  and below  that fire,

He who is like the garland  of black flower

In the  temple where  the outer walls act as protection

Who is the wonderful god  sleeps  on that bed

When will the time when  holding  the two  wedding pillars

I can pray  him  to the best of my ability  ,

Amman than malar kamala   koppoozh  thondra

Aniyangathu aravanayil   palli kollum

Adiyavarkalody  yendru kolo   anukum naale?

 

With the   great  lord Brahma  chanting prayers  using his four toungues,

With his   four faces  , facing all sides  with his  pretty eight eyes

Saluting and praying  and   sweetly  begging ,

That  lord  who with his   red gold like  belly button  being seen

And who sleeps   on the serpent bed  and 

His devotees, below, offering divine flowers    to his divine   feet

When   will that day   come?

1.Oh  Lord who was  born  from the pearl like belly  of  the world famous Kausaya,

2.Oh Lord who created    all the worlds through Lord Brahma

You bent your bow  to cut the head  of  the very strong  THadagai,

Oh my darling   of the Thirukannapuram   who charmed  the minds of those  who saw you,

Oh Lord who ruled all eight   directions,  Oh  best of Raghu clan , please  do sleep.

3,Oh dear darling baby of   Kausalya   who decorates her black hair  with Jasmine  from Kongu Nadu,

Oh son of Dasaratha  who is the son in law   of  Janaka   who has perennial fame .

Oh my darling   of  the  temple   of Tirukannapuram    where  water holier than  ganges  flows,

Oh my sweet nectar  of our clan     Oh  best of Raghu clan , please  do sleep.

4.Thamarai mel ayan avanai  Padaithavane   dayarathan than  ,

4.Oh Lord who created  Lord  Brahma   on the lotus on your navel,

Oh great son of Lord Dasaratrha, Oh consort  of Goddess  Maithili ,

Oh my darling of Thirukannapuram , which is hovered by several  singing  bees,

Oh Lord   who holds a strong  divine bow in your hands,   Oh  best of Raghu clan , please  do sleep.

5.Oh Lord  who gave   the kingdom   and  the great spreading wealth  to Bharatha,

And reached   the  deep  forest  along with your younger with never quenching love,

6.Oh Lord who reached  deep in the forest  followed by all relatives,

Oh Lord who is the cure to the mind  of sages and  who is the king of Ayodhya,

Oh darling of Thirukannapuram  which  is occupied  by learned people  ,

Oh  sri Rama    who followed the orders of his step mother , please do sleep

7.Oh Lord  who   as young baby on a banyan tree leaf  and  swallowed   the earth,

Oh Lord who killed Vali   and gave the  kingdom to his younger  brother,

Oh Darling of Thirukannapouram where the  wind brings   precious gems from ocean,

Oh Lord  of the city of waves  , Oh  Lord of Ayodhya  , please   do sleep.

Silai  valaivaa   sevagane  , Si Rama  Thalelo.

 

8.Oh Lord who  built a dam using mountains   and destroyed  Lanka protected by a wall,

Oh Lord who churned   the ocean with waves  and gave nectar   to the  Devas,

Oh my darling of Thirukannapuram   which is occupied by those who makes   arts grow,

Oh great hero who bent the bow  , Oh Rama , please do sleep.

9.THalai avizhum  narungunji Dayaradhan  than Kula mathalaai ,

Valaya  oru    silai adhanaal  mathil ilangai   azhithavane  ,

Kalai  kazhu neer  marungu   alarum  Kannapurathu yen karu maniye .

Ilayavarahathukku   arul  udayai  , Raghavane  thalelo  .

 

9.Oh  baby  of the clan of Dasaratha  , with a fragrant long hair  ,

Who by bending one bow   destroyed  Lanka   surrounded  by walls,

Oh my darling  of Thirukannapuram   where  very pretty flowers  blooms,

Oh Lord who has great love towards  your younger brothers, Oh baby of Raghu clan  , please do sleep.

தேவரையு மசுரரையும் திசைகளையும் படைத்தவனே
யாவரும்வந் தடிவணங்க அரங்கநகர்த் துயின்றவனே
காவிரிநல் நதிபாயும் கணபுரத்தென் கருமணியே

10.Devarayum asurarayum   thisaikalayum  padaithavane  ,

Yaavarum vanthu   adi vananga aranga nagar  thuyindravane ,

Kaviri nal  nadhi payum  Kannapurathu yen  karu maniye,

Ea vari ven chilai valavaa, Raghavane  thalelo 

 

10.Oh Lord who created  the devas , asuras   and the directions,

Oh Lord Who sleeps in Sri Rangam   making all others come there  and   salute your feet,

Oh darling of Thirukannapura  , where the good river Cauvery flows.

11.Kanni   nan  ma mathil pudai   soozh  kanapurattu  yen Kakuthan,

Thannadi mel  thalelo  , endru uraitha  thamizh malai ,

Kol navilum   vel Valavan  kudai Kula shekaran sonna  ,

Panniya nool paathum  vallar  pangayapangaya  pattharkale

 

11.The King Kula shekara  with trident   who ruled   his kingdom below one royal umbrella,

Has sung   this garland  in Tamil  as a lullaby    to make  sleep,

The Kakushta(Rama)  who lives  in THirukannapuram   surrounded by walls  ,

Which consists  of ten verses   and would   surely bless  all his devotees.

Section 9- This deals with  lamentation of   Dasaratha  on Rama  leaving to the forest

After  saluting  the   great  twin feet of lord Narayana,  you would have , become a king

Saluted and praised  by this great city , but you are to    go  to the forest which is difficult   to enter

She said, , Oh Good son  , I (dasaratha)   heard  the words  of Kaikeyi  who used to like you ,

Though  I made you  practice to  rule   this  country   in a very proper   way

Nei vaya vel  nedum kan nerizhayum  ilankovum   pinbu poka

Yevvaru nadanthanai  , yemmiramavo, yem peruman    yen cheithene

 

Obeying   the harsh words   from my cruel mouth  , without wishing  for this big kingdom

And leaving it , Leaving the big mouthed  elephant  , leaving the great  chariot  , leaving the  horses

You reached the forest   along with  Sita with long pointed eyes which is   like the  spear with  ghee  applied tips

Wearing  ornaments  , followed by  your young brother ,  how  did you walk, oh Rama, Oh  God what  shall I do?

மல்லணைந்த வரைத்தோளா வல்வினையேன் மனமுருக்கும் வகையே கற்றாய்

Mallanaintha varaintholaa  , val vinayyen   manamurukum  vakaye  kathrai

Mellanai mel  mun thuyindrai   indrini poi viyan kana  marathon  neezhal

Kallanai mel   kanduyila  kathranayo   kakutha  kari  Kove!

 

Oh baby of the clan of Kauasalya,  who has  broad long eyes like  the killing spear, oh Lord,

Who wears  the  curved bow  , who has  strong mountain like shoulders  , you learnt  only to melt the mind of great sinner  like me

You slept on soft bed earlier but from today  going to forest you would sleep  below leafless  trees in the cruel forest

Oh Kakustha , oh black king , did you learn to sleep  and close your eyes on the   bed  of rocks

Come here and now go ,once again  see me and go oh Lord   who for sake of,

Lady  who decorated her hairs with flowers and had pretty shoulders  like a bamboo

Broke the  bow  of the lord Shiva  , oh son who melts my  mind  , today   when you,

Go to huge forests where elephants wander, how come my mind  is not splitting in two pieces

Leaving his age old city, Crossing the ganges  river ,

   Gave  his slippers and kingship to  BHaratha

And he can be seen nowadays  inside THillai  thiruchithra kootam

With  eyes becoming happy to those people on earth,

And the devas   who do not blink  will never be their equal

After killing Viradha who had mountain like shoulders ,

After getting  the  great arrow  from the great  tamil sage

After cutting of the nose   of the Rakshasi  who could defeat  looks of a deer

After killing the rakshasas Kara  and dhooshana,

The rama who bent the bow   killed the magical  deer

If they who are capable  of saluting   and praying  him in the

Thiruchithra koodam   in thillai nagar  ,

Travel   then this    earth   would   become  holy

After killing Vali , after  stifling anger  of  Ravana ,

He who got   city   of lanka   burnt  ,

He  sits sweetly  in thillai nagar, thiru  chithira  koodam

Who is god of all  , The god Rama  himself  ,

I prayed to the twin feet  of him who is being prayed to

Arasu  aaka   yennen   matharasu   thaane

 

Using a cruel arrow , making the  full  ocean

Completely curdled  , building a dam , got up to other shore by that

Fighting with  asuras  with long burning spear and the king of Lanka

And  killing them all  , and giving the  kingdom to his younger brother

He  sat   sweetly with   the lady  who is goddess  Lakshmi

And he  Who sat  to rule is  in the  THillai nagar,

THiru chithira  koodam and by keeping his feet on my head

And I thought I am the king of a different  kingdom

THillai nagar thiruchithra   koodam thannul

Yem peruman than charithai cheviyaal kannal

Paruguvom  innamudham   madhiyomendre

Reaching back Ayodhya  with pretty  , golden gem studded   hall

After taking over kingship , he heard about the story  of Ravan

Whom he had killed earlier   from Agasthya,  and heard  Ramayana,

From the sons born to sita , the daughter  of Mithila   so that  ,

World would flourish, by  red pearl like mouth of theirs,

And we   who drank the story by our ears  as mouth,

Of the god   of  THiruchithra  koodam of THillai nagar

Would never bother  about Deva’s sweet nectar  as any thing

After going and killing   Jambuka who had done great penance

Saving the life of a   learned Brahmin  and making him wear

The invaluable  garland  studded with great gems given by  saint Agasthya

Getting   killed lavanasura  by his brother  SAthrugna,

He   parted   with valorous Lakshmana   due to curse  of sage(Durvasa)

We who have mind   which never  forgets him  who lives in thillainagar  chithirakoodam ,

Will never  get  sorrow that  some things  did not  become  true

On that day  sending all moving and not moving beings  to Vaikunta

Climbing on Garuda who is enemy  of all strong snakes, wining -

Over Rakshasas and shining   with his long   shoulders,

And being welcomed   by everyone  in  deva loka

He went to his  place Vaikunta  and sat  there pleasantly

And you please  pray that god in thilai nagar thiruchithrakoodam

Who is  forever there and forever beg him to be his  servants

Which was written well and those  ten verses of tamil

Those who can tell them   would reach  the feet,

Of Lord Narayana  who is  in  home in heaven
