About meaning and benefits Gayathri Manthra

About meaning and benefits Gayathri Manthra

Compiled by P.R.Ramachander from various sources)

It has been told

“Na Gayatrayha param Manthram,

Na Mathu pare devatha”

“There is no chant greater than Gayatari,

And no God greater than mother”

Please understand that , Gayathri manthra is not a prayer addressed to Mother Gayathri , but a manthra written in the poetic meter called Gayathri , three lines with each line having eight syllables. (Rig Veda 7.1.1-30, 8.2.14 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vedic_meter#Gayatri_meter ). It is but a prayer to the Sun God(Savithu). The text is as follows:-

In Devanagari

भू: भुवः स्वः

तत्स॑वि॒तुर्वरेण्यं॒

भर्गो॑ दे॒वस्य॑ धीमहि

धियो॒ यो नः॑ प्रचो॒दया॑त्

In Phonetic english

Om bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ

tát savitúr váreṇ(i)yaṃ

bhárgo devásya dhīmahi

dhíyo yó naḥ prachodayāt

– Rigveda 3.62.10

The real manthra consists of the last three lines, prefixed with Om Boor bhuva swaha, which is called Vyahruthi.

This Manthra is supposed to have been added to the Vedas by sage Kaushika . Because of that he was later called as Viswamithra(The friend of the universe). Several people have translated it in different ways . Some of them are given below:-

Monier Williams

“Let us meditate on that excellent glory of the divine vivifying Sun,

May he enlighten our understandings.”

Sir Wiliam Jones

"Let us adore the supremacy of that divine sun, the god-head who illuminates all, who recreates all, from whom all proceed, to whom all must return, whom we invoke to direct our understandings aright in our progress toward his holy seat.

William Quan Judge

"Unveil, O Thou who givest sustenance to the Universe, from whom all proceed, to whom all must return, that face of the True Sun now hidden by a vase of golden light, that we may see the truth and do our whole duty on our journey to thy sacred seat

Shivanath Shastri(Brahmo Samaj)

"We meditate on the worshipable power and glory of Him who has created the earth, the nether world and the heavens (i.e. the universe), and who directs our understanding.

Swami Vivekananda

We meditate on the glory of that Being who has produced this universe; may He enlighten our minds

S.Radhakrishnan

" We meditate on the effulgent glory of the divine Light; may he inspire our understanding."

"We meditate on the adorable glory of the radiant sun; may he inspire our intelligence."

Chanted properly within your mind with pure concentration and ultimate faith

it is not just a prayer but an essence if chanted with pure devotion and concentration one can feel vibrations which purify and heal you. It is meditated upon with  reverence, and finally an appeal is made to the divine to awaken and strengthen the intellect, the discriminating faculty of man. It will protect you from harm wherever you are traveling, working, or at home.

Westerners have investigated the vibrations produced by this mantra and have found that when it is recited with the correct accent as laid down in the Vedas, the atmosphere around becomes visibly at. So Brahmaprakasha, the effulgence of the Divine, will descend on you and illumine your intellect and light your path when this mantra is chanted.
