I was not knowing that this is a translation of this great epic “devi Mahathmyam “ in to Malayalam by Thunjathu Ezhuthachan. .Like his all other books, Ezhuthachan has adopted the , Kili Pattu( sung by parrot style)

I was surprised to find that the original 700 verses of Devi Mahathyam has been written as 798 verses in Malayalam .There was use of large number of original Sanskrit words her unlike his other books

Also in the beginning of some chapters , on which day of the week . it has to be read is mentioned

II.Introduction to Devi Mahathmyam original

The original book which relates the story of how the devi (mother Goddess) killed Madhu and Kaidabha as Vishnu Maya (Thamasic-base), killed Mahishasura as Lakshmi (Rajashic form-materialistic) and killed Shumbha and Nishumbha in the form of Goddess Saraswathi (Sathvic-spiritual) is known as Devi Mahatmya in South India, Chandi in West Bengal and as Durga Sapthasathi in the northern parts of the country including Varanasi. It consists of Chapters 74 to 86 (13 chapters) of the Markandeya Purana and has 700 stanzas. This Purana is also authored by Veda Vyasa and is a medium sized Purana.

The stories of Devi Mahatmya are as told by Sage Markandeya to Sage Baguri. He tells him that one king called Suradha, who was driven out of his kingdom by his own people met one Vysya (businessman) called Samadhi who was driven out of his home by his wife and sons, in the forest. They discover that though their own people have driven them out, they are both worried about the welfare of their people. It appears to them that this is unnatural. So they approach Sage Sumedhas who was also living in the forest. The sage tells them that all this is the illusion created by the great Goddess called Vishnu Maya. They became curious and want to know about this great mother Goddess. He then relates to them the story of Devi Mahatmya, which consists of three stories in all of which the mother Goddess kills the enemies of Gods.

The first story is that of Madhu and Kaidabha. They take birth from the earwax of Lord Vishnu while he was asleep and start troubling Lord Brahma who was sitting on the lotus originating from the belly of Lord Vishnu. Lord Brahma prays to the Goddess to help him continue his work of creation. The goddess appears and takes the form of Lord Vishnu and kills both Asuras after wrestling with them for thousands of years. Since both these Asuras were of Thamasic origin, she also had a thamasic form.

The second story is of how the mother Goddess helped the devas by killing Mahishasura. This Asura who had the form of buffalo, drove away the devas and Indra from their homes. They all go and approach the holy trinity for the redressal of their grievances. This made those three gods very angry and the innate power of the Goddess in them came out and joined together. This goddess was further strengthened by the powers of the various Gods. She was equipped with arms by all devas. This goddess, mainly consisting of the anger-generated power killed Mahishasura.

The third story is of how the Great Asura brothers Shumbha and Nishumbha were killed by the goddess. This time the gods approach Goddess Uma who was wandering in the Himalaya Mountains and told her of her sufferings. Out of the body of the Goddess came Koushikhi or Chandika. She was black in colour. She along with the powers generated by various Gods killed Shumbha and Nishumbha.

Sage Markandeya then tells of how, the king Suradha and Vysya Samadhi did penance on the goddess and got the boons that they wanted.

In the twelfth chapter of this great book, the Goddess tells that for one, who reads or hears, these three stories of her, there is nothing impossible to obtain including salvation.

Where a great saint called sumedhas was living

The king saluted the feet of the great sage

And king was treated well and fed by that great sage

Like that he lived there for a long time

And he walked here and there in the forest hermitage

Due to selfish thoughts increasing in his mind

He thought about various things in his mind

By the earlier kings observing Dharma

At this time ministers with very bad character

Are they protecting good habits or are they practicing bad habits

33.Swarga thulyangalaaya bhava nikaravum

Swarga sthreekalkku thulyanmaaraaya naarimaarum

My house and surroundings which were like heaven

And women who were equal to ladies of heaven

34.Yenthu cheivathu paarthaal onnum arinjeela

Santhatham asadvyayam cheikayo dhanamellam

What is to be done? When I think I do not know

If all oney is needlessly spent always

Yethrayum peedayodumm varthikkum dasanthare

Suffering a lot due several such thoughts

And when spending his time like this

At that time one day , he saw a Vaisya

And the king started to ask questions to him

Who are you who has come to this forest

Why is it that your face has faded

38.Yethaanum oru dukham undennu thonnum kandaal

Saadharam paramartham chollu yennodu sakhe

When we see it appears as if you have some sorrow

Oh friend , please do tell the truth to me

My wives and children wanted getting more money ,

And without any money with sorrow I started from there

Are they ok or are they suffering

And what type of work they are doing , I did know at all

43.arthavuum asadhvyam cheikayo thyajikkayo

Brithya vargavum yenthu cheithaar yannarijilla

Did they waste the money or gave it up

I do not know what the servant class did

Are they well behaved or are they with bad conduct

All my sons , I did not know all this

Thinking all this leads to sorrow in my mind, hearing this

Love towards them is increasing, what reason

It is true this is in my mind

Love and affection towards his sons and others,

And pride in temple and other charity affairs

Though there is wisdom , similar to both of us

Foolishness in the mind is coming, why is it

But the goddess who has a form of consciousness, that is all

From where was the goddess of great illusion born,

What is her caste for , what is the name of her caste

What is the character of her caste, What are the duties of her caste?

Chinthitham cholleeduvin varam nalkuvaan

King of asuras-Shumba and Nishumba

2.Yethrayum balya kaale chennu iruvarum

Chitham uracchu thapassu thudanginaar

3.Punya pradheshamaam pushkaram prapichu

Bhavichu Bhikshayum yethu nadannithu

Devas along with their wives thought

Themselves as Humans and started walking for alms

11.Dehavum yetham melinju vasam kettu

Dahavum poondu nadakkumaarayithu

Their body became thin and not in their control

And they were forced to walk with great thirst

12.Chennu chathur yugam naalpathum ingane

Pinne virinjane chennu vananginaar

Forts sets of four yugas got completely over

And They went and saluted Lord Brahma

13.Dukha santhikku , virijanodum koodi

Durga bhagawathiye smaricheedinaar

For getting sorrows quenched, Along with Brahma

They thought of Goddess Durga Bhagwathi

14.Munnam namukku varam aruli cheithathenne
