Gayatri ashtakam

(The octet on Gayatri)

(This great work is supposed  to be composed  by Adhi Sankara  but  it is not listed  in his complete works(https://www.advaita-vedanta.org/texts/shankara_works.html )   and even the style of writing does not resemble his style)

 

1.Viswamithrapapalaam   priyatharaam  vipraali   samasevithaam

Nithya nithya vivekadhaam smitha  mukhim  khandendhu  bhoosha jwalaam

Thamboolaaruna bhasamaana  vadhanaam, maarthanda  Madhya sthithaam

Gayathrim  Hari vallabham  trinayanaam  dhyayami  panchaananaam

 

The fruit   propagated  by Viswamithra, which is dearest to  Brahmins   who serve it

Which grants   wisdom daily by her  one a smiling face and  one who shines by wearing  a piece of moon,

Whose face  shines  pink like  the thamboola, Who is in the middle of Sun

Who is Gayatri  , the wife of Vishnu, who has  three  eyes and I meditate on her with five faces

 

2.Jathi pankaja  kethaki  kuvalayai sampoojithangri  dwayaam

Ththwarthathmika varna pankthi sahithaam thathwartha budhi pradhaam

Praanaayamaparaayanair budha  janai samsevyamaanaam shivaam

Gayathrim  Hari vallabham  trinayanaam  dhyayami  panchaananaam

She  whose feet is worshipped  by  flowers like Jathi(jasmine)  lotus and water  lily

Who is with meaningful  meaning  as  a soul , who grants  the  meaning of philosophy

Who is served  by  wise people  like   something like a gem   dear  to their souls

Who is Gayatri  , the wife of Vishnu, who has  three  eyes and I meditate on her with five faces

 

3.Manjeera  dhwanibhi samastha  jagathaam manjuthwa   samvardhinim

Viprengrikhathwaari  vaaritha maho raksho ganaam mrunmayim

Jaapthu  papa haraam  japa sumanibhaam  hamsena  samshobhithaam

Gayathrim  Hari vallabham  trinayanaam  dhyayami  panchaananaam

 

She    who makes  the entire  world happy by her  anklet like sound

Who coming from   the  voice of Brahmins and which makes rakshasas       becoming soft

Chanting of whom destroys sins, is very pleasing to hear and shines  better than swan

Who is Gayatri  , the wife of Vishnu, who has  three  eyes and I meditate on her with five faces

 

4.Kanchi chela  vibhooshithaa,, shiva mayim maalardha maaladhikaam

Vibhraanaam parmeswarim saranadhaam mohandha budhi chidhaam

Bhooraadhi   tripuraam, triloka janamim adhyathma saakhanuthaam

Gayathrim  Hari vallabham  trinayanaam  dhyayami  panchaananaam

 

She who wears  sari of Kanchi, who is pervaded with peace, she who wears many garlands

She who is shining parameshwari, who makes  one blinded  with passion  surrendering before  her as wise

She is completely  TRipuraa , one who is born in three worlds and is interested in spiritual  branches

Who is Gayatri  , the wife of Vishnu, who has  three  eyes and I meditate on her with five faces

 

5.Dhyathur garbha krusaanur thapa haranaam  saamaathmikaam saamagaam

Sayam kala  sudevithaam swaramayim dhoorvadhala shyamalaam

Mathur dhaasya vilochanaikama athi makheti aananda samraam

Gayathrim  Hari vallabham  trinayanaam  dhyayami  panchaananaam

 

Who when meditated reduces  suffering of a pregnant one, who is equal spirit  and sings sama veda

Who is good goddess in evening, who is full of musical notes and makes  him  who speaks of her as  pretty

By serving whom and seeing whom makes one  vigorous and think of joy

Who is Gayatri  , the wife of Vishnu, who has  three  eyes and I meditate on her with five faces

 

6.SAndhyaa raga  vichithra vasthra vilasad viprothamai sevithaam

Thaaraaheera  sumaalikaam suvilasad rathnendhu kumbantharaam

Rakaa  Chandra  mukhim rema  pathi nuthaam sankhaadhi baswathkaraam

Gayathrim  Hari vallabham  trinayanaam  dhyayami  panchaananaam

 

She who getting dressed  up in strange cloth  of dawn and dusk  and serves Brahmins

She who wears  good garland of stars and diamonds and is in pot of  gem like moon

She who has face like full moon, sho is praised by lord of Lakshmi and   shines like a conch

Who is Gayatri  , the wife of Vishnu, who has  three  eyes and I meditate on her with five faces

 

7.Veni  bhoositha malaka dwani karair bringai sadhaa shobhithaam

Thathwa jnana  rasayanajna rasanaa  saudha bramadha  brahmareem

Naasa alankrutha maukthi  kendhu kiranai saayam thamasa chedineem

Gayathrim  Hari vallabham  trinayanaam  dhyayami  panchaananaam

 

She whose hair is her ornament  , she whose  shining garland surrounded  by humming beetles

She who has  mixture of philosophy   and wisdom and   whose  home of her tastes makes one stunned  

And the rays  from the gems decorating her nose cuts off  the darkness  of the evening,

Who is Gayatri  , the wife of Vishnu, who has  three  eyes and I meditate on her with five faces

 

8.Padabdjanthara  renu kunkuma lasath phaaladwaya maavrutham

Ramba naatya vilokanai ka rasikaam vedantha  budhi pradhaam

Veenaa venu mrudangakaahalarawan  devai kruthanjranavathim

Gayathrim  Hari vallabham  trinayanaam  dhyayami  panchaananaam

 

She who has lotus like  feet , whose  forehead  is decorated by shining  dust called kumkuma

She who enjoys   witnessing the   dance of Ramba also grants  intelligence of Vedantha

The devas salute her  by making music from veena , flute ,drum and pipe

Who is Gayatri  , the wife of Vishnu, who has  three  eyes and I meditate on her with five faces

 

9.Hathyaa paana suvarna   thaskara mahagurvanganaa   sangamaan

Doshanchaila samana purandara samaa sachindhya suryopamaa

Gayathrim  sruthi mathur eka manasaa sandhyaasu ye bhoosuraa

Japthwaa  yaanthi  paraam gathim manumimam devyaa  param vaidhikaa

 

With the society of the  lady who is great guru, the murderer, the drunkard  and thief of  gold,

Who has  defect like   that of a mountain, would become like a lotus  exposed to sun

And the Brahmins with united mind would chant it and enjoy  the sweetness  of Gayathri,

Chanting which would lead  to salvation of the man as the goddess is one with divine knowledge

 

Ithi   Srimadh   paramahamsa parivraajaka  aachaarya

Sri madh sankaracharya  virachitham gayathryashtakam sampoornam

 

Thus ends the octet of Gatatri   composed  by  Srimad  Sankaracharya,

Who is  great  scholarly  guru   who has given up the worldly life
