Anukampa Dasakam (Ten Verses on Compassion) is a profound Malayalam spiritual and philosophical poem composed by the great social reformer and sage Sree Narayana Guru. Dictated around 1920 at Sivagiri, the work extols compassion (anukampa or daya) as the vital life-breath of human existence and a cornerstone of universal religious harmony

 

ഒരു പീഡയെറുമ്പിനും വരു-
ത്തരുതെന്നുള്ളനുകമ്പയും സദാ
കരുണാകര! നല്കുകുള്ളിൽ നിൻ
തിരുമെയ് വിട്ടകലാതെ ചിന്തയും.

 

Oru Peeda  urumbinum varu-

THaruthu yennulla  anukambayum  sadha

Karunakara nalgu  ullil nini,

Nin Thirumei  vittakalathe  chinthayum

 

One suffering  should not be caused

Even for an ant, let this  compassion  be given

Oh Doer  of mercy in my mind and the thought

That  will  not go away  from your divine body

 

അരുളാൽ വരുമിമ്പമൻപക-
ന്നൊരു നെഞ്ചാൽ വരുമല്ലലൊക്കെയും
ഇരുളൻപിനെ മാറ്റുമല്ലലിൻ
കരുവാകും കരുവാമിതേതിനും.

Irul  anbine maathum  allalin

Karu vaakum karuvaam ithethinum

 

BY grace comes pleasure, from a mind

Where love  is removed all problems come

The seed of the problems which  changes

The darkness  of love is the  seed  of everything

 

അരുളൻപനുകമ്പ മൂന്നിനും
പൊരുളൊന്നാണിതു ജീവതാരകം
‘അരുളുളളവനാണു ജീവി’യെ-
ന്നുരുവിട്ടീടുകയീ നവാക്ഷരീ.

 

Arul anbu anukamba moonninum

Porul  onnanu , ithu  jeevitha  tharakam

Arul  ullavan aanu  jeeviye

Yennu uru vitteduka  yee namakshari

 

Grace , love  , compassion  , the  meaning  of three

Are   the same, this is  the  star of life

Keep on repeating that  the one ,

Who has  grace  is the being, these  nine letters

 

അരുളില്ലയതെങ്കിലസ്ഥി തോൽ
സിര നാറുന്നൊരുടമ്പു താനവൻ;
മരുവിൽ പ്രവഹിക്കുമംബുവ-
പ്പുരുഷൻ നിഷ്ഫലഗന്ധപുഷ്പമാം.

 

Arul illa yathengila  sthithi . Thol

Sira   naaridonnuru  udumbu thaanavan

Maruvil pavahikkum ambuva

Purushan  nishphala  Gandha  pushpamaam

 

The  position of  a person without grace

Is that he  has a body with bad smelling  skin and head

That  man  is the  river  flowing in desert

A useless perfumed  flower

 

വരുമാറു വിധം വികാരവും
വരുമാറില്ലറിവിന്നിതിന്നു നേർ;
ഉരുവാമുടൽ വിട്ടു കീർത്തിയാ-
മുരുവാർന്നിങ്ങനുകമ്പ നിന്നിടും.

 

Varum  aaru  vidha vikaaramum

Varumaarilla arivathinnu ner

Uruvaam udal vittu  keerthiyaam

Uruvarnnu  ingu anukamba  ninnidum

 

The six   type  of sensations,

Are not coming  , to know this

Leaving  the form of body, taking

The form of fame then compassion  will stand

 

പരമാർത്ഥമുരച്ചു തേർ വിടും
പൊരുളോ, ഭൂതദയാക്ഷമാബ്ധിയോ?
സരളാദ്വയഭാഷ്യകാരനാം
ഗുരുവോയീയനുകമ്പയാണ്ടവൻ?

 

Paramartham  urachu thear vidum

Porulo, Bhootha  dhayaa akshamaabdhiyo

Sarala  adhvaya  bhashya kaaranaam

Guruvo  yee  anukamba  aandavan

 

After telling the truth , the chariot will be left

Whether  it is a thing or  the impatience  to mercy to beings

The easy interpreter  of  adhvaitha

Is it the guru or the  one god who showed compassion

 

പുരുഷാകൃതി പൂണ്ട ദൈവമോ?
നരദിവ്യാകൃതി പൂണ്ട ധർമ്മമോ?
പരമേശപവിത്രപുത്രനോ?
കരുണാവാൻ നബി മുത്തുരത്നമോ?

 

Purashakrithi  ponda  deivamo,

Nara dhivyakrithi poonda dharmamo

Paramesha  Pavithra puthrano

Karunaavaan nabi muthu rathnamo

 

Is it the  god  who assumed  male form

Or is it Dharma which has put form of divine man

Is it the holy  son of  Great  God(Jesus)

Is it merciful  nabi  Muthurathnam (pearl like Mohammed Nabi)

 

ജ്വര മാറ്റി വിഭൂതികൊണ്ടു മു-
ന്നരിതാം വേലകൾ ചെയ്ത മൂർത്തിയോ?
അരുതാതെ വലഞ്ഞു പാടിയൗ-
ദരമാം നോവു കെടുത്ത സിദ്ധനോ?

 

Jwara maathi Vibhoothi kondu, Mun

arithaam velakal cheitha moorthiyo

Aruthaathe valanju padiyou

Daramaam novu  kodutha  sidhano

 

Is it the person who cured  fever

By sacred  and did  miracles  in the past

Or in agony songs to cure abdominal pains

Or a realized saint who cured the pain

 

ഹരനന്നെഴുതി പ്രസിദ്ധമാം
മറയൊന്നോതിയ മാമുനീന്ദ്രനോ?
മരിയാതുടലോടു പോയൊര-
പ്പരമേശന്റെ പരാർത്ഥ്യഭക്തനോ?

 

Haranaennu yezhuthi prasidhamaam

Marayonnothiya maamuneebdrano?

Mariyaathu udalodu poyara

Parameshwarande  pararthya Bakthano?

 

Is it the  great sage  who wrote  Hara

And  chanted   the vedas

Or is it the great devotee  who ,

Went to Lord Shiva  before dying with body

 

നരരൂപമെടുത്തു ഭൂമിയിൽ
പെരുമാറീടിന കാമധേനുവോ?
പരമാദ്ഭുതദാനദേവതാ-
തരുവോയീയനുകമ്പയാവൻ!

Is  it the  heavenly  wish giving cow which

Has  taken a human and walks about in the world

Or is  the  very wonderful, god of charity

Which has decided to become  the compassion

If  you  do Bhajan of Hari, you will get  pleasure

If not  birth after  birth  you would be wandering, , Hey you

भवसागर में नीर अपारा । हरि का नाम जहाज सुखारा ।
जपे जो निश्चय धार पार लगायगा रे ॥ १ ॥

 

BHavasagar  mein neer  aparaa, Hari  ka naam Jahaj  Sukhara

Jape  jo nischay dhar paar Lagayaga re

 

In the  ocean of Samsara  , water is too much, The boat  of Hari is pleasant

If you chant  definitely  you will cross  to other  shore, Hey you

मायाजाल बडा है भारी । निकलन की नहि दूजी बारी ।
मानुषतन जब छूटे फिर पछतायगा रे ॥ २ ॥

 

Mayaajaal  badaa hai  Bhari, nikalan ki naahi  dhooji  BHaari

Maanushathan jab chootte phir  pachthayagaa  re

 

There  is very  have  magic, there is no going out  the second time

When you leave  the human body  , you will repent, Hey You

चार दिवस का जग में डेरा । क्या करता है मेरा मेरा ।
खाली आया था फिर खाली जायगा रे ॥ ३ ॥

 

Chaar dhivas  ka  jad mein deraa, Kya  karthaa hai  meraa  meraa

Khali  aayaa thaa Phir  khali  jaayagaa re

 

The  camp in the  earth is for four days , What you are doing  , its mine, its mine

You came  empty, you will go empty, Hey You

सकल जगत का करता स्वामी । घटघट का प्रभु अन्तर्यामी ।
ब्रम्‍हानंद सुमर नर दुख मिटायगा रे ॥ ४ ॥

 

Sakala  Jagath kaa kartha  swami, ghatghat ka  prabhu  Antharyami

Brhmanand  sumar nar  dukh  mitayaga re

 

God  is the  master of all worlds, the lord  of every heart is  the  inner God

Chant  name of  the divine joy, he will destroy all your sorrow , Hey you

The Sri Krishna Kruta Durga Stotram (the prayer to Goddess Durga chanted by Lord Krishna) is found in the Brahmavaivarta Purana.

॥श्रीकृष्ण उवाच:॥
त्वमेवसर्वजननी मूलप्रकृतिरीश्वरी।
त्वमेवाद्या सृष्टिविधौ स्वेच्छया त्रिगुणात्मिका॥१॥

 

Krishna uvacha

Thwameva   sarva  Janani , moola  prakrthir  easwari

THwam avadhyaa  Srushti  vidhow  swechayaa  TRigunathmikaa

Krishna said:-

You  are the mother of all, Goddess  of root  of nature

You are  immortal , You of your own created , You are soul of three habits

कार्यार्थे सगुणा त्वं च वस्तुतो निर्गुणा स्वयम्।
परब्रह्मस्वरूपा त्वं सत्या नित्या सनातनी॥२॥

 

Karyartha  SAgunaa thwam cha vasthutho nirgunaa swayam

Parabrahma Swaroopa , thwam Sathyaa Nithyaa sanathani

 

But when you aare acting you are good natured but in fact you are one without any qualities

You have form of  divine Brahman  Truthful and from beginning truthful

तेज:स्वरूपा परमा भक्तनुग्रहविग्रहा।
सर्वस्वरूपा सर्वेशा सर्वाधारा परात्परा॥३॥

 

THeja swaroopaa paramaa , Bakthanugraha  Vigrahaa

Sarva  swaroopaa , Sarvesaa , Sarvaadhaaraa Parathparaa

 

You have  a shining form, you are divine , The one  who blessing  to devotees

You are the form of all, the goddess  of all, the support  of all and the most divine

सर्वबीजस्वरूपा च सर्वपूज्या निराश्रया।
सर्वज्ञा सर्वतोभद्रा सर्वमङ्गलमङ्गला॥४॥

 

Sarva  bheeja awaroopaa cha  sarva  poojyaa Nirasrayaa

SArvajnaa  SArvathobhadra , sarva  mangala  mangala

 

You are  the root of everything, worshipped  by all, not  dependent  on any one

Knows everything, always  safe, the divine  of all divines

सर्वबुद्धिस्वरूपा च सर्वशक्ति स्वरूपिणी।
सर्वज्ञानप्रदा देवी सर्वज्ञा सर्वभाविनी॥५॥

 

Sarva  budhi  Swaroopa cha sarva  Sakthi nswaroopini

Sarva  jnana  pradhaa  devi Sarvajnaa, sarva  bhavini

 

Oh Goddess You are all the intelligence , You are  the form of all goddesses

You are  one  who gives  all knowledge, all knowing goddess , You are  all emotions

त्वं स्वाहा देवदाने च पितृदाने स्वधा स्वयम्।
दक्षिणा सर्वदाने च सर्वशक्ति स्वरूपिणी॥६॥

 

THwam  swahaa  deva  dhane cha, Pithru dhane  swadhaa swayam

Dakshinaa  sarva dhaane, sarva  Sakthi   swaroopini

 

You  are  Swaha  when giving to  devas Swadha when giving  to Pithrus

The  fee for all  charity,She has form of all powers(Goddesses)

निद्रा त्वं च दया त्वं च तृष्णा त्वं चात्मन: प्रिया।
क्षुत्क्षान्ति: शान्तिरीशा च कान्ति: सृष्टिश्च शाश्वती॥७॥

 

Nidhraa  thwam  cha dhayaa  thwam  cha  THrishnaa  thwam  cha  aathmana  Priya

Ksuth Kshanthi  santhir  eesaa  cha  kanthi  sristhischa  saswathi

 

You are  sleep , you are  mercy , you are craving and you are dear  to all beings

You are  goddess of hunger , enduranceand peace and  the stable light of all beings

श्रद्धा पुष्टिश्च तन्द्रा च लज्जा शोभा दया तथा।
सतां सम्पत्स्वरूपा श्रीर्विपत्तिरसतामिह॥८॥

 

SRadhaa pushtischa thandhraa cha Lajja   shobhaa dhayaa  thadhaa

SAthaam  sapath   swaroopaa srir vipaththi rasathaam iha

 

You are  attention, health, fatigue  , shyness luster and mercy

Always  have  form of wealth and always  interested  in prosperity

प्रीतिरूपा पुण्यवतां पापिनां कलहाङ्कुरा।
शश्वत्कर्ममयी शक्ति : सर्वदा सर्वजीविनाम्॥९॥

 

 Preethi  roopa punyavatham  paapiam  kalahaanguraa

Saswath  karma mayee Sakthi  sarvadhaa  sarva  jeevinam

 

You  have  form of likingone who starts quarrel  between  sinners and blessed ones

Always to all beings you the  constant  power  to do their work

देवेभ्य: स्वपदो दात्री धातुर्धात्री कृपामयी।
हिताय सर्वदेवानां सर्वासुरविनाशिनी॥१०॥

 

DEvebhya  swapadho dathi dathu darthri  kripamayi

HIthaaya  sarva  devaanaam sarvaasura  vinaasini

 

She who gives her feet  to devas , you wear the principles and, You  are merciful

For  the good of all devas  you destroy all asuras

योगनिद्रा योगरूपा योगदात्री च योगिनाम्।
सिद्धिस्वरूपा सिद्धानां सिद्धिदाता सिद्धियोगिनी॥११॥

 

Yoga  nidhraa  Yoga ropaa Yoga  Dathri cha yogeenaam

Sidha  swaroopaa , sidhaanaam  sidhi  dathaa, Sidhi  yogini

 

You atre yogic sleep, has  the form of Yoga and giver of occult to gis

Has an occult form, the giver of occult  to Sidhas, The yogini who is ready

माहेश्वरी च ब्रह्माणी विष्णुमाया च वैष्णवी।
भद्रदा भद्रकाली च सर्वलोकभयंकरी॥१२॥

 

Maheswari cha  Brahmaani Vishnu mayaa  cha  Vaishnavi

Badhradha Badhra  kali   cha  sarva loka  bhayankari

 

You the  greatest Goddess ,The power of Brahma , The Vishnu mayaa and powr of Vishnu

One who keeps safe the  Bhadra  kali and the  terror  to all worlds

ग्रामे ग्रामे ग्रामदेवी गृहदेवी गृहे गृहे।
सतां कीर्ति: प्रतिष्ठा च निन्दा त्वमसतां सदा॥१३॥

Grame Grame  Grama Devi, Gruha  devi gruhe  gruhe]

Sathaam Keerthi prathishtaa  cha  nindhaa thwasanthaam sadhaa

 

In every village you are  Village Goddess  , In every home you are home goddess

Famous consecration by the rich, you also have  bad treatment by the  bad people

महायुद्धे महामारी दुष्टसंहाररूपिणी।

रक्षास्वरूपा शिष्टानां मातेव हितकारिणी॥१४॥

 

Maha yudhe Maha Maari Dushta  samhara roopini

Rakshaa swaroopaa shishtaanaam maatheva  hitha  kaarini

 

In huge  wars and in great epidemics you have  form of destroyer

You also have  form saving to the  principled people, Oh Mother you do as per our wish

वन्द्या पूज्या स्तुता त्वं च ब्रह्मादीनां च सर्वदा।
ब्राह्मण्यरूपा विप्राणां तपस्या च तपस्विनाम्॥१५॥

 

Vandhyaa  Pojyaa Sthuthaa thwam cha Brahadheenamm sarvadhaa

Brahmanya  roopaa vipraanaam thapasya  cha thapasvinaam

 

You have form which can be saluted , to be worshippedAnd these are for Brahma  and others always

To the Brahmins you have Brahmana form and to  sages you are form of penance

विद्या विद्यावतां त्वं च बुद्धिर्बुद्धिमतां सताम्।
मेधास्मृतिस्वरूपा च प्रतिभा प्रतिभावताम्॥१६॥

 

Vidhyaa  Vidhyavathaam thwam cha budhir Budhimathaam  Sathaam

Medha  Smruthi  swaroopaa cha prathibhaaPrathibhavathaam

 

For  scholars you are knowledge , Intelligence  for the intelligent

You are the form of wisdom and memory and creative to geniuses

राज्ञां प्रतापरूपा च विशां वाणिज्यरूपिणी।
सृष्टौ सृष्टिस्वरूपा त्वं रक्षारूपा च पालने॥१७॥

 

Raajnaam Prathaapa roopaa cha visaam vanijya  roopini

Srushtou Srishti swaroopaa , Rakshaa roppaa  cha palane

 

To kings you are  form of splendour and to citizens you are form of business

To creators you have form of ceation  and for those  who protect  the protectress

तथान्ते त्वं महामारी विश्वस्य विश्वपूजिते।

कालरात्रिर्महारात्रिर्मोहरात्रिश्च मोहिनी॥१८॥

 

THadhaanthe thum  mahaa mari, vishwasya Vishwa poojithe

Kala Rathri Maha Rathrir Moha  rathrischa mohini

 

At the  end you take form of great epidemics and worshipped by  universe

You are also the pitch dark night , great night  , night  of passion and lady who attracts

दुरत्यया मे माया त्वं यया सम्मोहितं जगत्।
यया मुग्धो हि विद्वांश्च मोक्षमार्ग न पश्यति॥१९॥

 

Durathyayaa mein Maayaa thwam yayaa  SAmmohitham Jagath

Yayaa mughdou hi moksha marga na  pasyathi

 

Oh mother you are illusion to me  and by this way you attract  the world

And  being attracted by it, even wise  people do not think of way to savation

इत्यात्मना कृतं स्तोत्रं दुर्गाया दुर्गनाशनम्।
पूजाकाले पठेद् यो हि सिद्धिर्भवति वाञ्छता॥२०॥

 

Ithyathmanaa  krutham  Stotram Durgaaya Durga Nasanam

Pooja kale padeth yo hi sidhir bhavathi vanchathaa

 

This  as composed  by me , is one which destroys difficulties

Those who  read during worship, they will get the desired power

वन्ध्या च काकवन्ध्या च मृतवत्सा च दुर्भगा।
श्रुत्वा स्तोत्रं वर्षमेकं सुपुत्रं लभते ध्रुवम्॥२१॥

 

Vandhyaa cha kakavandhyaa cha  mrutha vathsaa cha  durbhagaa

Sruthwaa sthothram Varshamakam Suputhra labhathe Dhruvam

 

Those  who do not bear child or  those who bear only one child or those giving birth to dead babies

If they hear  this prayer, definitely  within a year  they  will get a son

कारागारे महाघोरे यो बद्धो दृढबन्धने।
श्रुत्वा स्तोत्रं मासमेकं बन्धनान्मुच्यते ध्रुवम्॥२२॥

 

Kaaraa ghare maha ghore yo badho druda bandhane

Sruthwaa  Stotram maasamekam bandhanaath muchyathe

 

Those  imprisoned  in horrible jail  or those who are properly tied up

On hearing this prayer within a month , would be freed from the jail

यक्ष्मग्रस्तो गलत्कुष्ठी महाशूली महाज्वरी।
श्रुत्वा स्तोत्रं वर्षमेकं सद्यो रोगात् प्रमुच्यते॥२३॥

 

Yaksha grastho galathkushti maha sooli  maha jwari

Sruthwaa Stotram varshamekam sadhyo rogaath pramuchyathe

 

Those caught by TB , problems of throat , leprosy , shingella or great Feaver

 Hearing this prayer within a  year will  get  out of the disease

पुत्रभेदे प्रजाभेदे पत्‍‌नीभेदे च दुर्गत:।
श्रुत्वा स्तोत्रं मासमेकं लभते नात्र संशय:॥२४॥

 

Puthra bhedhe , praja bhedhe , pali  bhedhe cha  durgatha

Sruthwaa Stotram masamekam labhathe  naathra  samsaya

 

In the misfortune of loosing son, wife or friend

If they hear this prayer they  will get  them bck  within a mnth

राजद्वारे श्मशाने च महारण्ये रणस्थले।
हिंस्त्रजन्तुसमीपे च श्रुत्वा स्तोत्रं प्रमुच्यते॥२५॥

 

Raja dware smasane cha maharanye  rana Sthale

Himsthra  janthu  sameepa cha  sruthwaa Stotram pramuchyathe

 

If you are in king’s court or cremation ground or dense  forest or battlefield

Or near a wild  animal  which will hurt  if you hear  this prayer  you wil be released

गृहदाहे च दावागनै दस्युसैन्यसमन्विते।
स्तोत्रश्रवणमात्रेण लभते नात्र संशय:॥२६॥

 

Gruha Daahe  cha dhavaganai dasyu  sainya  samanvithai

Stotra  sravana  maathrena labhathe naathra  samsaya

 

In the burning home of  forest fire  or  in the middle of violent enemy

Hearing the prayer , you will get  immediately released

 

महादरिद्रो मूर्खश्च वर्ष स्तोत्रं पठेत्तु य:।
विद्यावान धनवांश्चैव स भवेन्नात्र संशय:॥२७॥

 

Maha daridhro moorkhascha varsha Stotram padethu ya

Vidhyavan  Dhanvaanscha bhavennathra samsaya

 

Even if a person is very poor or is an idiot if he reads  this prayer  for one year

He would  become  learned and  rich  withut any doubt
