THirumandhan
kunnu Devi Keerthanam
DEvotional song addressed to Mother of Thirumandhankunnu
Translated by
P.R.Ramachander
(King Mandatha was a great ancestor of Lord Rama in the solar dynasty. He was the father of king Ambareesha and a great devotee of Lord Shiva. After he gave the kingdom he went and met Lord Shiva in Mount Kailasa. At that time Goddess Parvathi was not there. When the king wanted a Shiva Linga for worship , Lord Shiva gave him , the Shiva LInga which goddess owned even before her marriage and which used to be worshipped regularly. King Mandatha brought the Shiva Linga and settled on a hill in Kerala(Near the town of Perinthalmanna) and started worshipping it.When Goddess Parvathi returned she wanted her Shiva linga. Lord Shiva refused to get back some thing he gave.Goddess Parvathi sent Bhadra Kali along with Veerabhadra, Nandi, Mahakala and other Bhootha Ganas to bring back her Shiva linga. They tried their best but failed to get back the Shiva Linga. The goddess herself and merged herself with the Shiva Linga which has been consecrated there . This was a called The moola Sthana (The original place) and then a temple was built for the Goddess. The hill of Mandhatha was called Thirumandhankunnu and the Goddess was called Thirumandhakunnil Amma . (Please read my article on this great temple in http://www.hindupedia.com/en/Thirumandankunnu_Bhagawathy_Temple ).
