Dakshina Lakshmi stotram

Dakshina* Lakshmi stotram
(A prayer to the very pleasing Lakshmi)
Translated by
P.R.Ramachander
(Dakshina could indicate, south, right side, pleasing, Vishnu and so on. I feel “pleasing” would be the better meaning here. Lakshmi is personification of movement. She keeps on shifting herself. In this prayer which consists of 12 names of Lakshmi, she is requested to stay stable in our home.)
Trilokya poojithe devi kamala , Vishnu vallabhe,
Yaya thawam achalaa Krishne thathaabhava mayee sthiraa, 1

Oh Goddess who is worshipped in all the three worlds,
Oh Kamala , Oh Consort of Lord Vishnu,
Oh Consort of Krishna, If only you are stable ,
And be with me permanently.

Kamala chanchala Lakshmi chalaa bhoothir hari Priya,
Padma Padmaalayaa samyak uchai sri Padma dharini, 2

Oh Kamala, Oh unstable one , Oh Laksmi,
Oh Goddess who moves, Oh Goddess of prosperity ,
Oh Darling of Hari, , Oh Padma, Oh goddess who lives in lotus,
Oh Goddess who is pleasant, Oh Goddess who is exalted,
Oh Goddess of wealth , Oh Goddess who holds a lotus.

Dwadasaithani naamani Lakshmi samppojya ya padeth,
Sthiraa Lakshmir bhaved thasya puthra dhara abhi saha, 3

If these twelve names of Lakshmi are read and worshipped,
Lakshmi would be stable and he would be with wife and son.

Ithi Sri dakshinaa Lakshmi stotram sampoornam.

Thus ends the Dakshina Lakshmi Stotram

Phala Sruthi

Ithi they kaditham Vipra brahma mantrogha vigraham,
Trilokya Mangalam nama kavacham Brahma roopakam. 31

Oh Brahmin , what I have told you till now is the form of Brahma,
And is known as armour for the betterment of the three worlds.

Brahmna kaditham poorvam , Narayana mukhachatham,
Thava snehaan mayaakhaatham pravakthavyam na kasyachith. 32

Lord Brahma heard it from Narayana and out of liking to you,
I told it to you and you should not tell it to any other.

Gurum pranamya vidhivath Kavacham prapateth thadhaa,
Sakrud dwistir yadha jnanam sa hi sarva thapomaya. 33

By saluting the Guru according to rules, this armour has to be ,
Read twice or thrice as much as needed and this will lead you to ascetic nature.

Manthreshu sakaleshwa Desike nathra samsaya,
Satham ashtotharam chaasya purascharya vidhi smrutha. 34

All these mantras are elevating without doubt,
And these can be read one hundred and eight times.

Havanaadhin dasamsena kruthwa thath saadhayeth druvam,
Yadhi syaath sidha kavacho Vishnureva bhaveth swayam. 35

Performing fire sacrifice for one tenth of that , one would definitely achieve,
If one practices thus and becomes an expert in this kavacha , equality to Lord Vishnu.

Mantha sidhir bhaveth thasya purascharya vidhaanatha,
Spardha mudhooya sathatham Lakshmeer Vani vaseth Thatha. 36

If one gets realization of this mantra following the instructions of Guru,
Goddess Lakshmi and Saraswathi would show mercy to him and be with him.

Pushapajalyashtakam dhathwa moolenaiva padeth sukrud ,
Dasa varsha sahasrani poojaya phala mapnuyath. 37
If with devotion the text is read after worshipping one hundred times with flowers,
He would get the same result as worshipping for ten thousand years.

Bhoorje vilikhyanguleekaam swarnastham dharayed yadi,
Kande va dakshine bahou sopi Vishnur na samsaya. 38

If anointing is done by the ring finger adorned with gold in streams,
Then without any doubt Vishnu will be in his neck or right hand.

Aswamedha sahasrani Vajapeya sathani cha,
Maha dhaanaani yanaiva pradakshinyam bhuvana sthadha, 39

He would get the effect of conducting one thousand Aswa medhas,
One hundred Vajapeyas , performing great charities and going round the earth.

Kalaam narhanthi thanyaiva sakrud ucharana Thada,
Kavchasya prasadena Jeevan muktho Bhaven nara. 40

Even if one does not merit it , by properly reading the Kavacha,
The humans will get salvation.

Trilokyam kshobhayathyeva,\
Trilokya vijayee bhaveth. 41

Even if all the three worlds are Angry,
He would win over all the three worlds.

Idha, kavacham gnathwa yajedhya purushothamam,
Satha laksham prajaptho api na manthrasya sidhyathi. 42

If this armour is understood and sacrifice done by a great man,
He would not get the same effect by chanting ,
Any other Mantra one million times.

Krishnashtakam III

Krishnashtakam III

By

Adhi Shankara

Translated by

P.R.Ramachander

( In my translations earlier I had included two Krishnashtakams. But on referring the complete works of Shankara, I find that this is the only one composed by Adhi Shankara. The last stanza clearly indicates that it was composed so that his mother would get salvation.)

Sriyaslishto Vishnu sthira chara gurur veda vishayo,
Dhiyaam sakshee shudho harira sura hanthabja nayana,
Gadhee Shankhee Chakreevimala vana mali sthira ruchi,
Saranyo lokeso mama bhavathu krushnokshi vishaya. 1

Let my eye be able to see that Krishna, who is the protector and Lord of the world,
Who is embraced by Lakshmi , Who is Vishnu , who is the teacher to all,
Who is the subject of the Vedas, who is the witness to wisdom,
Who is pure , Who is Hari, who is killer of Asuras, who has lotus like eyes,
Who carries mace , conch and the wheel , who has stable taste and wears forest garlands.

Yatha sarvam jatham viyadhanila mukhyam jagadhidham,
Sthithou nissesham yovathi nija sukhamsena madhuhaa,
Laye sarvam swasmin harathi kalayaa yasthu savibhu,
Saranyo lokeso mama bhavathu krushnokshi vishaya. 2

Let my eye be able to see that Krishna, who is the protector and Lord of the world,
Who was the source of birth of Ether, air , fire , earth and water ,
Who is the killer of Madhu who looks after the world by his pleasure,
And Who is the one who merges everything in himself at deluge by his power.

Asoonayamyadhou yani Niyama mukhyai sookaranai,
Nirudhyedham chitham hrudi vilaya maneeya sakalam ,
Yameedyam pasyanthi pravaramathayo mayi namasou,
Saranyo lokeso mama bhavathu krushnokshi vishaya. 3

Let my eye be able to see that Krishna, who is the protector and Lord of the world,
Who is the one seen by the wise sages , who follow the prescribed rituals.,
Control their souls completely , turn off their minds from ordinary things,
And completely stabilize all the activities of their mind.

Prithvyam thishtan yo yamayathi maheem Vedanadharam,
Yamithyadhou Vedo vadathi jagathameesamamalam,
Niyantharam dhyeyam muni sura nrunaam moksha damasou,
Saranyo lokeso mama bhavathu krushnokshi vishaya. 4

Let my eye be able to see that Krishna, who is the protector and Lord of the world,
Who controls the world, being very much a part of it, who carries our pain,
Who is the lord of the world as told in the Vedas , Who is pure and the law giver,
And who is the subject of meditation of devas, sages and men and giver of salvation.

Mahendradhi devo jayathi dithi janyasya balatho,
Na kasya swathanthryam kwachidhapi kruthow yath kruthi mruthe,
Kavithwa derggavam pariharathi yosou vijayina,
Saranyo lokeso mama bhavathu krushnokshi vishaya. 5

Let my eye be able to see that Krishna, who is the protector and Lord of the world,
Who is the won by whose strength Indra and other devas win battle against asuras,
Who is the one without whose encouragement no one has independence of action,
And who is the one who cures the pride of the ability to write poems of the poets.

Vinaa yasya dhyaanam vrajathi pasuthaam sookhara mukhaam,
Vinaa yasya jnanam jani mruthi bhayam yathi janathaa,
Vinaa yasya smruthya krumi satha janim yathi sa vibhu,
Saranyo lokeso mama bhavathu krushnokshi vishaya. 6

Let my eye be able to see that Krishna, who is the protector and Lord of the world,
Without whose meditation people happen to be born as animals like pig,
Who causes people to get fear of birth or death by not knowing him,
And who causes people to be born as insects due to one not remembering him.

Narraa thangothanga sarani sarano branthi harano,
Ghana shyamo vaamo Vruja sisu vayasyo , Arjuna sakha,
Swayambur bhoothaanam janaka uchithachara sukhadha,
Saranyo lokeso mama bhavathu krushnokshi vishaya. 7

Let my eye be able to see that Krishna, who is the protector and Lord of the world,
Who destroys sorrow of humans , who helps those who surrender, who cures confusion,
Who is dark black , who is a pretty child of Vruja with friends there,
who is friend of Arjuna,
Who was created by himself , who creates all beings and gives proper reward and punishment.

Yadha dharma glanirbhavathi jagathaam kshobha karana,
Thadhaa loka swami prakatitha vapu sethu drugaja,
SAthaam dathaa swacho nisamsa guna geetho vrujapathi,
Saranyo lokeso mama bhavathu krushnokshi vishaya. 8

Let my eye be able to see that Krishna, who is the protector and Lord of the world,
For whenever the world becomes tumultuous, when dharma suffers in execution,
Then the Lord of Gokula who follows Dharma, who does not have birth,
Who looks after good people and who is independently praised by Vedas,
Appears as the Lord of the world to reform it.

Ithi harir akhilaathma aaradhitha sankarena,
Sruthi visadha gunosou mathru mokashartha madhya,
Yathi vara nikate Sri yuktha Aavirbhabhoova,
Swagunavrutha udhaara sankha chakrabhja hastha. 9

Lord Vishnu with all properties as revealed by the Vedas,
Who is primeval and the soul of all beings of the world,
Prayed like this by Sankara for the salvation of his mother,
Appeared before that great sage along with Goddess Lakshmi,
With a merciful mien holding Whel mace and the lotus.

Ithi Shankaracharya virachitham Krishnashtakam samaptham.

Tripura Sundari Veda Sara Sthavam

Tripura Sundari Veda Sara Sthavam
(The prayer which is essence of Vedas addressed to Tripura Sundari)

Translated by

P.R.Ramachander

Kasthuri panga bhaswad gala chalad amala sthoola muktha valeekaa,
Jyothsnaa sudhaavadathaa sasi sisu makutalankrutha Brahma pathni,
Sahithyambhoja brungee kavi kula vinuthaa sathwikeem Vag vibhoothim,
Dheyanme shubra vastrhra kara chala valayaa vallakeem vadhayanthi. 1

May I be blessed with word power that is Sathvika by the consort of Brahma,
Who has moving necklaces in her musk applied shining neck,
Who has the luster of the body which resembles the white luster of moon,
Who wears crescent on her head, who is the female bee enjoying the honey,
From the lotus leaf called literature, whose fame is sung by group of poets,
Who wears white cloths and who plays Veena with her bangles making sound.

Yekanthe yogi vrundai prasamitha karanai kshuth pipasaa vimukthai,
Swanandam dhyana yogadhbhi suguna sadhrusi drusyathe chitha madhye ,
Ya devi hamsa roopa bhava bhata haranam sadhakanaam vidathe,
Sa nithyam nadha roopaa TRibhuvana janani modham avishkarothu. 2

Let her who exists in the mind of the sages , who have controlled all their senses
And have won over hunger and thirst and are the meditating with joy,
And appears clearly like a thread of a lotus at the end of their Dhyana Yoga,
And her who with the form of swan destroys the fear of birth among devotees,
And her who is of the form of sound and the mother of the three worlds express her joy.

EEkshithri srushti kale tribhuvanamadha ya thath kshanenu pravisya.
Sthemaanam prapayanthi nija guna vibhavai sarvadhaa vyapya viswam,
Samharthree sarva bhasaam vilayana samaye swathmani swaprakasa,
Sa devi karma bhandham mama bhava karanam nasayithwadhi Shakthi. 3

Let the primeval power who at the time of creation having seen all the three worlds Spreads her self -divinity in the entire universe and protects them and at the end,
As well as Destroys all other powers and merges them all within herself.
And who appears to the others as a self luminous body ,
Destroy my ties with this world , which cause birth and death.

Lakshyaa ya chakra raje nava pura lasithe yoginee vrunda gupthe,
Souvarne saila srunge suraguna rachithe Thathwa sopana yukthe,
Mandrinya mechakangyaa kucha bharana thaya kola mukhya cha saardham,
Samragnee saa madheeyaamadha gaja gamanadeergamayusthanothu. 4

Found in the top of the golden mountain of Meru the ladder of principles,
Constructed by the devas , which is found to be present,
In the nine puras which were kept hidden by the Yoginis,
Accompanied by the black manthrinis decorating their breasts with ornaments,
Is the queen with a walk of exuberant elephants and let her give us long life.

Hreenngarambhoja brungi , haye mukha vinutha , hani vrudhyadhi heenaa,
Hamsoham manthra ragnee hari haya varadhaa haadhi manthaksha roopaa,
Hasthe chin mudhrikadyaa hatha bahu dhanujaa hasthi krutha priyamaa,
Hardham sokaathirekam samayathu lalithaadheeswari pasa hasthaa. 5

Let her Who is female bee of the sound of Hreem,
Let her who is being praised by the horse faced ones,
Let her who does not either increase or decrease ,
Let her who is the Goddess of the Hamsa chant,
Let her who is the soul of mantras staring with ha,
Let her who wears the divine symbol,
Let her who has killed several asuras and the consort of Shiva,
And let her who is Goddess Lalitha and holder of the noose,
With love and softness put out completely my sorrow.

Hasthe pangeruhaabhe sarasa sarasijam bhibrathim loka mathaa,
Kseero dhanwath sukanyaa kari vara vinuthaa nithya pushtabhja gehaa,
Padmakshee Hema varna mura ripu dhayithaa sevadhisampadhaam ya,
Saa may daridrya dosham dhamayathu karunaa drushti pathai rajasram. 6

Let her who holds a lotus flower in her lotus like hands,
Let her who is the mother of the world, who was born in the ocean of milk,
Let her who was praised by the elephant who is forever famous,
Let her who has eyes like lotus and lives in a lotus ,
Let her who is of golden colour and consort of the enemy of Mura,
And let her who blesses with wealth cure the defect due to poverty by her looks.

SAchid brahma swaroopa amsa kala guna yuthaam nirgunaam nirvikaaram,
Raga dweshaadhi hanthrim , ravi sasi nayanaam , rajya dhana praveenaam,
Chatwarimsath trikone chathuradhika same chakra raje lasantheem,
Kaamakshmi kamithaanaam vitharana chathuraam chethasaa bhavayami. 7

I meditate on Kamakshi , who is the real form of the real divine Brhamam,
Who though having all good qualities does not have any qualities,
Who is without any emotions , Who destroys bias and hatred,
Who is one with moon and Sun as her eyes, who is capable of even giving a kingdom,
Who shines in the wheel with forty angles and who is capable of fulfilling all desires.

Kandharpe santhi darpe trinayana nayana jyothishaa deva vrundhyai,
Sa Sankam sasrupatham savinaya karunam yachithaa kama pathnyaa,
Ya devi drushti pathai punarapi madanam jeevayaamasa sadhya,
Sanithyam roga santhyai prabhavathu lalithadheeswari chith prakaso. 8

When the God of love was completely burnt down by the light of the eyes of Shiva,
And when with humility and tears in her eyes Rathi devi
Begged the devas and Lord Shiva for mercy and for his life
Then that Goddess by her simple sight gave again life to the God of love
And let that Lalitha Devi with her divine luster always cure my diseases.

Havyai kavyaischa sarvai sruthi chayta vihithai karmabhi Karmasheelaa,
Dhyaanaadyai rashtabhischa prasamitha kalushaa yogina parnna bhakshaa,
Yamevaneka roopam prathi dinamavanou samsrayanthe vidhignaa,
Saa may mohandhakaaraam bahu bhava janitham nasayathwadhi matha. 9

Let the darkness due to passion which has crept in me over several births,
Be destroyed by the primeval mother who destroys the sins of all those,
Who does fire sacrifices and the yogis who are adepts in the eight fold path living in huts,
And who assumes many different forms for the sake of the good of people .

Lakshyaa moola trikone guru vara karuna lesatha kama peete,
Yasyaam viswam samastham bahu thara vithatham jayathe kundalinyaa,
Yasyaa Shakthi prorohaadha virala mamrutham vindathe yogi vrundam,
Thaam vande nada roopaam pranava pada mayim praninaam prana dhathrim. 10

I salute the Goddess who is of the form of sound,
Who is pervaded with the primeval sound “Om “,
Who gives the soul to all living beings ,
Who can be seen in the kama peeta in the basic triangle because of grace of Guru,
Who creates the entire world only through her own power as Kundalini
And who has the power to make available the rare nectar to her devotee sages,

Hreengarambodhi lakshmeem , hima giri thanayaam easwaraanaam,
Hreem manthraradhya devim sruthi satha shikarair mrugyamanam mrugakshim,
Hreem manthra anthai sthrikutai sthira thara mathibhir dharya maanaam jwalanthim,
Hreem Hreem Hrem ithyaja srumhyudhaya sarasije bhavayeham bhavaneem. 11

I meditate in the lotus of my mind by chanting “Hreem, Hreem”, that Goddess Bhavani,
Who is the Goddess Lakshmi of the ocean of milk called Hreem,
Who is the daughter of the mountain, who is the goddess to Gods,
Who is worshipped by the sound “Hreem”,
Who is the deer eyed one can be seen by hunting in the peaks of Vedas,
And who can be seen as light at the end of the Chant “Hreem” by great mediators.

Sarvesham dhyana mathraath savithuru daragam chodayanthi maneeshaam,
Savithri thath padarththa sasi yutha makuta Pancha seershaa trinethraa,
Hasthagrai Shankha chakradhy akhila jana parithrana dakshayudhaanaam,
Bhibhranaa vrunda mamba visadayathu mathim mamakeenaam mahesi. 12

Let my intelligence be given clarity and dept by that great Goddess,
Who is visible as Savithri in the solar system , just by meditation of people,
Who wears the crescent, , who has three eyes, who has five heads and,
Who shines with weapons like conch and wheel in her hands for protection of people.

Karthree lokasya leela vilasitha vidhinaakarayathri kriyaanaam,
Bharthree swanu prvesadwiyadha anila mukhai, Pancha bhoothai swasrushtai,
Harthree swenai vadhamna punarapi valaye kala roopam dhadhaanaa,
Hanyadhaa mulamasmath kalusha bhara muma bhukthi mukthi padathree. 13

Let all the onus of accumulated sins of mine be completely destroyed by Uma,
Who playfully creates the world, who is the law giver behind all actions,
Who rules over all beings created by herself using the five elements by entering them,
Who destroys every thing by her own power , who takes the form of “time” at deluge,
And who is the one who is the good and bad of all giving them wealth and salvation.

Lakshyaa yaa punya jaalai guru vara charanombhoja seva viseshath,
Drusyaa swannhe sudheebhir dura dalitha maha padmena kosena thulye,
Laksham japthwapi yasyaa manu varanimaa sidhi manthro mahntha,
Sa nithyam maamakeene hrudaya sarasije vasam angi karothu. 14

Let the pond of my mind be approved as her place of stay by that Goddess,
Who can be made the aim of any one by doing good deeds,
Who becomes visible to good people by serving the teacher in the maha kosa,
And all occult powers can be owned by any one who chants her mantra hundred thousand times.

Hreem Sreem Iym manthra roopaa hari hara vinuthaa, agasthya pathni prathishtaa,
Haadhi kadhyarna Thathwa, sura pathi varadaa , kama raja prathishtaa,
Dushtaanam dhanavaanaam mana bhara haranaa, dukha hanthri budhaanaam,
SAmragnee , chakra ragnee pradhi sathu kusalm maha mongaraa roopaa. 15

Let me given great welfare by the queen of Sri Chakra who is of the form of “Om”,
Who is of the form of “Hreem”. “sreem” and “Iym”,
Who is worshipped by Shiva and Vishnu,
Who is kept in her mind by wife of sage Agasthya,
Who is the meaning of the Haadhi and Khaadhi chants,
Who blesses Indra , Who is dear to Shiva, the king of love,
Who destroys the pride of bad asuras , who cures sorrow of sages and is the empress.

Sri mandrartha swaroopa , sritha jana duritha dwantha hanthrri saranyaa,
Srotha smartha kriyaanaama vikala phaladhaa phala nethrasya dhaaraa,
Sri chakranthar nishannaagruha vara janani, dushta hanthree varenya,
Srimath simhasanesi pradhi sathu vipulaamn keerthi mananda roopa. 16

Let me given great good fame by the one who sits on the throne,
Who is of the form of “Sreem”, who solves the problems of those who surrender to her,
Who gives results without problems to rituals prescribed in Vedas,
Who is the consort of God who has eyes on his forehead,
Who lives in Sri Chakra, who is the mother of Lord Subrahmanya,
And who is the killer of bad people and one who grants boons.

Please make me slave of your lotus like feet ,
As I am singing your praise Oh lad of Raghu clan , Oh ocean of mercy,
Who is being praised in the pretty banks of the ocean of milk,
By Brahma , Shiva , Indra , Maruths , Rudra , and groups of saints,
Who is partial in protecting good people , who is greater than the greatest,
Who has appeared in this world to reduce the burden of this earth,
As a pretty slightly black human being , though he is full of wisdom.

As I am the source of satisfying the hunger of the rutted elephant,
Which is the domestic life and being grinded by the feet of God of death,
And have lost my health due to the madness created by regal and base qualities,
And as I am oppressed , does not have any other go .

Janma sarjitha papa samanwitha hruth kamala , pathithe , pasu kalpe.
Hey Raghu Veera , maha rana dheera , dhayaam kuru mayyathi mandha maneeshe,
Thwam janani bhagini cha pitha mama thava dasithwa vithapi krupalo,
Thwaam bhajatho Raghu nandana dehi dayanagha , may swa padambhuja dasyam. 7

Please make me slave of your lotus like feet ,
As I am singing your praise Oh lad of Raghu clan , Oh ocean of mercy,
As I am a sinner accumulating sin in my heart during several births
As I am down trodden and like an animal , Oh Hero of the clan of Raghus,
Oh Valorous God in wars , please show mercy on me as I am a slow witted one.
And though you are my mother, sister, and father , accept me as your slave.

Thwam thu dhayalu makinchana vathsala mulpala hara mapara mudhaaram,
Rama vihaya kamayama namaya mesa janam saranam nanu yayam,
Thwath pada padma matha sithameva mudhaa khalu deva sadavasaseetham,
Thwaam bhajatho Raghu nandana dehi dayanagha , may swa padambhuja dasyam. 8

Please make me slave of your lotus like feet ,
As I am singing your praise Oh lad of Raghu clan , Oh ocean of mercy,
Oh merciful one , Oh God who loves the poor , Oh God who wears a garland of lily,
Oh Rama, arguing within myself as to Whom else can I surrender to , except you,
I decided to surrender at your lotus like feet , Oh Rama who is along with Sita.

Ya karunamrutha sindhur , anadha janothama bandhu , rajothama karee,
Bhaktha bhayormi bhavobdhi tharee sarayu thati neethata charu viharee,
Thasya Raghu pravarasya niranthara mashtaka medath anishta haram vai,
Yasthu padeth amara sa naro labhathe Achyutha rama padambhuja dasya. 9

He who reads without fail the all sorrow removing octet of the chief of the Raghu clan
Who is nectar of ocean of mercy, The closest relation to all orphans,
Who does only good deeds , who is the boat to the devotees ,
Which helps them cross the ocean of domestic life with torrential waves,
Who wanders in the shores of River Sarayu , would get rid of death,
And becomes lucky enough to serve the lotus feet of Lord Rama.

Saraswathi Chalisa(Hindi)

Saraswathi Chalisa
(The forty verse prayer addressed to Saraswathi)

English translation

P.R.Ramachander

(Saraswathi is the mother of knowledge and wisdom. This great prayer in Hindi is addressed to her. )

Doha
Janak Janani Pad Kamal Raj, Nij Mastak Par Dhaari,
Bandau Maatu Saraswati, Buddhi Bal De Daataari.
Purn Jagat Mein Vyaapt Tav, Mahima Amit Anantu,
Ramsaagar Ke Paap Ko, Maatu Tuhi Ab Hantu.

Doha
The feet of the mother and father are ruling the lotus
And I hold it on my head,
I salute the mother Saraswathi, who grants wisdom and strength,
Your power is spread all over the world and is endless and immeasurable,
Oh mother, only you can mitigate all the sins that I have done.

Jay Shri Sakal Buddhi Balaraasi, Jay Sarvagya Amar Avinaasi.
Jay Jay Veenaakar Dhaari, Karati Sadaa Suhans Savaari.

Victory to she who is the strength of wisdom,
Victory to the indestructible god, who knows everything,
Victory to her, who holds Veena in her hand,
Who always travels on a divine swan.

Roop Chaturbhujadhaari Maata, Sakal Vishv Andar Vikhyaata.
Jag Mein Paap Buddhi Jab Hoti, Jabahi Dharm Ki Phiki Jyoti.

Whose form is the four armed mother,
Who is famous all over the world,
In this world when there is a sinful thought,
Then comes the tasteless flame of Dharma.

Tabahi Maatu Le Nij Avataara, Paap Heen Karati Mahi Taara.
Baalmiki Ji jo they Gyaani, Tav Prasaad mahima jan Janie .

Then the mother will take an incarnation,
And she would make us sinless stars,
Through your blessings people knew about,
The great wise sage called Valmiki,

Raamaayan Jo rachey banayi , aadhi kavi padavi ko payi
Kalidaas Jo Bhaye Vikhyaata, Teri Kripaa Drishti Se Maata.

And the Ramayana was written by him ,
And he was called the primeval poet.
Oh mother, through your merciful look,
Kalidas became very famous.

Tulasi Sur Aadi Vidvaana, Bhaye Aur Jo Gyaani Nana.
Tinhahi Na Aur Raheu Avalamba, Keval Kripa Aapaki Amba.

Thulasi das and Sur das became wise men,?
And did not have any one else but you to support,
Oh mother this is definitely your mercy.

Karahu Kripa Soi Maatu Bhavaani, Dukhit Din Nij Daasahi Jaani.
Putra Karai Aparaadh Bahuta, Tehi Na dharai Chitt Sundar Maata.

Mercy is shown by her who is mother Bhavani
And this is known and real devotees will know
The son does lot of mistakes,
But you wear a mind that is pretty, mother.

Raakhu Laaj Janani Ab Meri, Vinay Karu Bahu Bhaanti Ghaneri.
Mein Anaath Teri Avalamba, Kripa Karau Jay Jay Jagadamba.

Oh mother now I am keeping this shame of mine,
And humbly salute you in various ways,
I am endlessly dependent on you,
Please show me your mercy, Oh mother of the world.

Madhu Kaitabh Jo Ati Balavaana, Baahuyuddh Vishnu Te Thaana.
Samar Hajaar Paanch Mein Ghora, Phir Bhi Mukh Unase Nahi Mora.

The asuras Madhu and Kadidab were extremely powerful,
And they wrestled with Maha Vishnu till he was tested,
And the horrible war went on for thousands of years,
But still Lord Vishnu was not able to defeat them.

Maatu Sahaay kinhoo Tehi Kaala, Buddhi Viparit nhayee Khalahaala.
Tehi they Mrityu Bhai Khal Keri, Purvahu Maatu Manorath Meri.

Oh mother , At last Lord Vishnu requested for help
And told That I did not do it earlier because of ignorance,
For the death of these brothers has to come by you only,
And I should have expressed this wish to you earlier.

Chand Mund Jo The Vikhyaata, Chhan Mahu Sanhaareu Tehi Maata.
Raktabij Se Samarath Paapi, Sur-Muni Hriday Dhara Sab Kampi.

Within a second in the war , Oh mother you killed,
Chanda and Munda who were very famous warriors,
There was The great sinner called Raktha Bheeja,
And hearing about him, devas and sages shivered with fear.

Kaateu Sir Jim Kadali Khamba, Baar Baar Binavau Jagadamba.
Jag Prasidhdh Jo Shumbh Nishumbha, Chhan Me Badhe Taahi Tu Amba.

And Oh mother cut off his head very easily,
And again and again you did this, Oh mother of universe,
The Shumbh and Nishumbh who were world renowned,
And Oh mother you killed them both within no time.

Bharat-Maatu Budhi Phereu Jaai, Ramachandra Banvaas Karaai.
Ehi Vidhi Raavan Vadh Tum Kinha, Sur Nar Muni Sab Kahu Sukh Dinha.

The mind of the mother of Bharatha was spoiled,
And Sri Ramahandra went and lived in the forest,
And due to this, you made the death of Ravana happen,
And this is being told by all devas, men and sages.

Ko Samarath Tav Yash Gun Gaana, Nigam Anaadi Anant Bakhaana.
Vishnu Rudra Aj Sakahi Na Maari, Jinaki Ho Tum Rakshaakaari.

Without singing your praise none becomes able,
Is the conclusion drawn from time immemorial,
And for this Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva are witness,
For you are the patron who protects them also.

Rakt Dantika Aur Shataakshi, Naam Apaar Hai Daanav Bhakshi.
Durgam Kaaj Dhara Par Kinha, Durga Naam Sakal Jag Linha.

You are called as Rakth Danthika and Sathakshi ,
And this was because you ate very many asuras,
To those who take the name of Durga in this world,
There are never any problems in this world.

Durg Aadi Harani Tu Maata, Kripa Karahu Jab Jab Sukhadaata.
Nrip Kopit Jo Maaran Chaahei, Kaanan Mein Ghere Mrig Naahei.

You are the destroyer of difficulties in this world, Oh mother,
Please take mercy on us as and when we need , oh giver of joy .
When the king became angry and wanted to kill,
Or in the Forest where very cruel animals are there,

Saagar Madhy Pot Ke Bhange, Ati Toofaan Nahi Kou Sange.
Bhoot Pret Baadha Yaa Dukh Mein, Ho Daridra Athava Sankat Mein.

Or when one is stranded in the middle of the ocean,
Or when we re caught in a furious cyclone,
Or when we are tortured by devils and ghosts,
Or in poverty or when we are sad,

Naam Jape Mangal Sab Koi, Sanshay Isame Karai Na Koi.
Putrahin Jo Aatur Bhaai, Sabei Chhaandi Puje Ehi Maai.

On Chanting the her names all good would happen,
And there need not be any doubt about his,
For a ll those who do not have sons or if they are in danger,
The only method for all of them is Worship of Chandi.

Karai Path Nit Yah Chaalisa, Hoy Putra Sundar Gun Isa.
Dhupaadik Naivedy Chadhavei, Sankat Rahit Avashy Ho Jaavei.

By reading this forty verse prayer daily,
One would get a pretty son with good character,
By offering incense and Naivedhya to her,
They would definitely get rid of their sorrow.

Bhakti Maatu Ki Karei Hamesha, Nikat Na Aavei Taahi Klesha.
Bandi Path Kare Shat Baara, Bandi Paash Door Ho Saara.

Be always show devotion to mother,
And then problems will never come close to you,
If the imprisoned one reads this seven times,
All the ties binding him will go far away.

Rama Sagar Badhi hethu Bhavani, Keejai Krupa dasa sada nija jani.

The goddess Bhavani is like the Ocean of Rama,
And would always show mercy to her devotes.

Doha
Maatu Sooraj Kaanti Tava, Andhakaar Mama Roop,
Dooban Te Raksha Karahu, Paru Na Mein Bhav-Koop.
Bal Buddhi Vidya Dehu Mohi, Sunahu Sarasvati Maatu,
Adham Ramasaagarahi Tum, Aashray Deu Punaatu.

Doha
Mother you shine like the Sun God,
And darkness is my real form,
Please save me from drowning ,
So that I can cross this well of miseries,
I desire that you give me strength, wisdom and knowledge,
And please hear my prayer, oh mother Saraswathi,
You are the immeasurable ocean of Rama,
And only you can be depended upon to cross it.

Vrindavana ashtakam

Vrindavana ashtakam
(The octet on Vrindavana)

Translated by

P.R.Ramachander

(Vrindavana is a place on the shores of Yamuna, very near to present day Mathura. The Yadava king Nandagopa along with his family and people shifted to this place when he found lot of troubles happening to the baby Krishna. Lord Krishna spent his childhood these and left it only when he went to Mathura to kill Kamsa. To the devotees of the Lord, it is a holy of holies.)

Na yoga , na sidhir na mamasthu moksho,
Vaikunta loke pi na prasadathvam,
Premapi na syad ithi chet taram thu,
Mamasthu vrindavana eva vasa. 1

I do not prefer yoga, occult powers or salvation,
I do not prefer to be with the Lord in Vaikunta,
Nor do I prefer to have only pure love for him,
But I would prefer to live in Vrindavana.

Taranam janur yathra vidhir yayase,
Sad bhaktha choodamanir uddhavo pi,
Veekshyaiva madhurya dhooram tad asmin,
Mamasthu vrindavana eva vasa. 2

Because due to their fate , during the strolls,
Great devotee jewels like Udhava,
Saw the sweetness existing here ,
Preferred to be born here as a blade of grass,
I would prefer to live in Vrindavana.

Kim they krutham thapa kshithithi,
Gopyo pi bhume sthuvathe sma kirthim,
Yenaiva krishnangri padankithesmin,
Mamasthu vrindavana eva vasa. 3

The Gopis asked the earth they lived in,
“What Thapas and penances you did,
To get this fame and have foot prints of Krishna”,
And so I would prefer to live in Vrindavana.

Gopanganaa lampata thaiva yatra,
Yasyam rasaa poornatamathvam apa,
Yato raso vai sa ithi sruthisthaan,
Mamasthu vrindavana eva vasa. 4

Because of the passionate journey of the Gopa maids,
It has become full of great sweetness,
And since Vedas say “That God is sweetness”,
I would prefer to live in Vrindavana.

Bhandeendra Govardhana rasa pithais,
Trisimake yojana panchakena,
Mithe vibhuthwad amithe be chasmin,
Mamasthu vrindavana eva vasa. 5

Surrounded on three sides by Bhandirayana, Govardhana,
And the place where Rasa leela used to take place,
And is of only five yojanas circumference is Vrindavana,
But it has unlimited divinity and greatness,
So I would prefer to live in Vrindavana.

Yathradhipathyam vrusha bhanu putrya,
Yenodhayeth prema sukham janaanaam,
Yasmin mamasa balavath yato asmin,
Mamasthu vrindavana eva vasa. 6

It is ruled by Radhe , the daughter of Vrusha Bhanu,
And the pleasure of love of the people rises there,
And as my strength lies in that place,
I would prefer to live in Vrindavana.

Yasmin maha rasa vilasa leelaa,
Na prapayam srirapi sa thapobhi,
Tatrollasa manju nikunja punje,
Mamasthu vrindavana eva vasa. 7

Goddess Lakshmi inspite of great penances,
Could not enter the rasa dance there,
And so to enjoy the many pretty bowers,
I would prefer to live in Vrindavana.

SAdaa rurunyanku mukhaa visankam,
Khelanthi koojanthi pikalee kirah,
Sikandini yatra natanthi thasmin,
Mamasthu vrindavana eva vasa. 8

Ruru and Nyanku deer play there always fearlessly,
And the nightingale coos endlessly,
And the bumble bees dance there with abandon and so,
I would prefer to live in Vrindavana.

Vrindavanashtakam ethad uchai,
Patanthi ye nischala budhyasthe,
Vrindavanesangri Saroja sevaam,
Sakshat labhanthe janusontha yeva. 9

Those who read this octet on Vrindavana,
With an unwavering mind,
And serve the great Vrindavana ,
Would definitely get the nearness to Krishna.

Kunja Viharayashtakam II

Kunja Viharayashtakam II

By

Sri Roopa Deva

Translated By

P.R.Ramachander

((“Rupa Goswami (1489-1564 CE) is a devotional teacher, poet, and philosopher from the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition of Hinduism. Alongside Sanatana Goswami he was considered as the leader of the Six Goswamis of Vrindavan - a highly influential group of devotees made up from a number of disciples of the Vaishnava saint, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.”-Wikipedia
Please also refer to my translation of Kunja Viharyashtakm I, available in this same web site)

Avirathara rathi bandhu smera bandhra sri,
Kabalitha iva radhapanga bangee tharangai,
Mudhitha vadana chandra chandrika peeda dhari,
Mudhira madhra kanthir bhathi Kunje vihari. 1

The Lord who is much prettier than Rathi’s consort,
The Lord who has been swallowed by the waves of glances of Radha,
The Lord Who has a smiling face and wears the feather of peacock,
And the Lord who has the mind stealing luster of the cloud, shines as Kunja Vihari.

Thatha sushira ghanaanaam nadha manadha bhaajaam ,
Janayathi tharuneenaam mandale mandithaanaam,
Thata bhuvi nata raja kreedaya bhanu puthryaa,
Vidhatha thula chareer bhathi kunje vihari. 2

Along with ornaments of invaluable gems and with accompaniment of
Musical sounds created by the groups of maidens surrounding him,
In the shores of Yamuna, the daughter of Sun God, Kunja Vihari shines
With his royal dance involving pretty movements of his body .

Shikhi nigalitha shadje Kokile panchamadye,
Swayamapi nava vamsyoddhamayam grama mukhyam,
Drutha mruga mada gandha, sushtu Gaandhaaram samgnam,
Tribhuvana druthi haarir bhathi Kunje vihari. 3

When the peacocks are playing Shadja and the Cuckoos are Playing Panchama,
In front of the important people of the village Kunja Vihari ,
Who is the prettiest in all the three worlds is playing his flute,
The essence of Gandhara with musk of the deer permeating the environment.

Anupama kara shakhopatha radhanguleeko,
Laghu laghu kusumanam paryatan vatikayam,
Sarabha samanu Geetha schithakanteerabhiruchair,
Vruja nava yuvathi bhir Bhathi Kunja Vihari. 4

Holding the incomparably pretty fingers of Radha,
Like a very tender flower , you took her to the Garden,
And accompanied by the loud songs coming from the minds,
Of pretty damsels of Vrindavana , The Kunja Vihari shines.

Aharipu krutha laasye ka chakarabda vadye,
Vruja giri thata range , brunga Sangeetha bhaaji,
Virachitha paricharya schithrathou ryytrikone,
Sthamitha karana vruthir bhathi kunje vihari. 5

When the peacocks dance ,when the flute sings soulful music,
And when the bevy of bees sings prettily together,
In the valley of the mountains , in Brindavana,
The Kunja Vihari shines along with several of his friends,
By completely controlling his senses.

Disi disi suka sareemandalair gooda leelaa,
Prakata manu patathbhir nirmithascha rya pooraa,
Thadathi rahasi vrutham preyasi kanna mole,
Smitha mukha mabhi jalpan ,bhathi kunje vihari. 6

When the parrot couples are enjoying the play of love,
With an obviously seen sense of wonderment ,
The Kunja Vihari shines by telling about it,
With a smile, in the ears of his sweet hearts.

Thava chikura kadambham sthambhate prekshya kekee,
Nayana kamala lakshmeer vandathe Krishna saaraa,
Aliralamala kanthm nauthi pasyethi Radhaam,
Sumadhura mabhisamsan Bhathi Kunje Vihari. 7

Your curly black tresses make the peacocks benumbed,
Seeing your pretty lotus like eyes, the deer salutes you,
The bees seeing your hair , worship you and Kunja Vihari,
Tells Radha , do you see all these happenings.

Madana tharalabala chakra valena vishwa,
Gwidha varakalaanaam sikshaya sevya maanaa,
Skhalitha chikura vese Skanda desepriyaya,
Pridhitha pradhula bahur bhathi Kunje vihari. 8

When you are being served by very many maidens
Overcome by passion by various blessed arts that they have learned,
Kunja Vihari keeps his very pleasing loving hands on their neck,
Which is covered by their loosely untied hair and shines.

Idham anupama lelaaharee Kunje Vihari ,
Smarana padamadheethe thushtadheerashtakam ya,
Nija guna vruthaya Sri Radhayaa aaradhithastham,
Nayathi nija padabhjam Kunja sathmadhi raja. 9

If this great prayer addressed to Kunje vihari ,
Is read and meditated upon , then Kunja Vihari,
Who is always being worshipped by Radha,
Would lead him to the feet and place of Kunja Vihari.

Ithi Sri Rupa deva virachitham Kunja Viharyashtakam Sampoornam
Thus ends the Octet on Kunja Vihari written by Sri Rupa Deva.
