Pancha Puranam

Pancha Puranam

Translated  by
P.R.Ramachander

Panniruthirumurai (பன்னிருதிருமுறைகள்)are the songs of Tamil Saivism  projecting the glory of Lord Shiva. Out of this Panniruthirumurai songs, five sacred books are glorified as Panchapuranam. They are 1. Thevaram, 2. Thiruvaachakam, 3. Thiruvisaippa, 4.Thiruppallandu, and 5.
It is believed that  if we sing songs   from Pancha puranam(the above five books)  . all  our problems would fly away like cotton. Those who sing start with a prayer to Ganesa   and end with a   song  praying  for  the welfare  of various people
Inclusion of Pancha purana in usual   worship

In a few temples  of Tamil Nadu  After   the traditional worship  including Deeparadhana , The  Brahmins   chant  the Vedas and after   they finish  , and then  the tamil  prayers as written by great acharyas  are sung by othuvars (People  who sing tamil prayers)

At that time   some people would request  them to chant  Pancha puranas(five epics). And the oduvars  would sing from Tamil  religious literature  mentioned above  .The choice of the songs does differ   and do noy matter
Then the priests would again do deepardhana  and then prasada is distributed.

It would be great  if we can   to Shiva temples   and sing them after  the  morning  Abhisheka .Those  who are unable to do it can   sing them in the home itself

While  Chanting  Shaivite tamil  prayers  it is common to say “Thiruchittambalam (Meaning  “Holy Chidambaram temple) before and after   every verse
Here  is one example. The songs  may differ  from othuvar  to othuvar

A Search For Bhagwad Gita In A Nutshell

A Search For Bhagwad Gita In A Nutshell

By
P.R.Ramachander

Bhagwat Gita is a very tiny part of the biggest ever epic written by man-Mahabharatha.
It adopts the conversational style of Upanishads, with Guru giving explanations and the disciple asking doubts. According to the Hindu calendar, it was taught in the battle field by Sri Krishna who was the charioteer to Arjuna the fighter about 5000 years back. (One who leads to the one in the midst of the turmoil) Though there is no doubt that the Vedas and the Upanishads were composed earlier, Gita has become the religious book by which a Hindu identifies himself. Though the initial attempt in Gita is to teach Arjuna, the fact that” all action is done by God through any man(being)and because of this that individual  cannot claim responsibility or credit for the action carried out by him”, it is more a summary of the philosophical approaches to  the leading of day today life  and the search for ultimate truth.
The three greatest interpreters of the Hindu religion of the post puranic era viz Adhi Shankara, Ramanujacharya  and Madhwacharya  have written commentaries to this great work  to prove that their  interpretation of Vedic principles is the only correct one. If any of these great savants thought that there was , ever a possibility of giving the essence of this great work by a few verses from it, I am sure they would have done it. To my mind they did not do it because this great book was not about one small principle but a chronicle of the latest knowledge of several approaches to the Hindu way of realization of God.
But this did not stop others from trying to find the essence of Gita. I feel what they were all doing was similar to the blind men trying to describe the elephant. I am giving below four such approaches which seem to be well known and I want to inform the readers that the translations have been done by me, P.R.Ramachander
Saptha Sloki Gita

(These seven slokas in this order from Bhagawad Gita  has been published by Gita press, Gorakpur, in their collection of stotras called  Stotraratnavali. It is supposed to represent in a nutshell , the teachings contained in the 700 slokas of  Bhagawad Gita. I understand that this Saptha Sloki Gita is being recited as a daily prayer by the Kashmiri Pundits for hundreds of years)

Bhagawan Uvacha:-

Om ithyaksharam Brahma,
Vyaharan maam anusmaran,
Ya prayathi  thyajan deham,
Sa Yathi Pramamam gathim.                                  1(8-13)

The God said:-

He who , meditates on  me,
As “Om”, which in Brahman,
While leaving this ephemeral body,
Will surely attain the most supreme state.

Arjuna Uvacha:-

Sthane Hrisikesa, Thava prakeerthya,
Jagath prahrushthya  anurajyathe cha,
Rakshamsi bheethani  diso dravanthi,
Sarve namasyanthi cha sidha sangha.                      2(11-36)

Arjuna said:-

In this state, Oh Lord, Singing about you.
The world is happy and is rejoicing,
To see the evil ones flying away with fear,
And all those devoted ones saluting you.

(This is told after seeing the Viswa Roopa  of the Lord)

Bhagawan Uvacha:-

Sarvatha pani padam thath,
Sarvatho akshi siro mukham,
Sarvatha sruthimalloke,
Sarvamavithya thishtahi.                                             3(13-14)

The God said:-

It has hands and legs everywhere,
It has eyes head and mouth everywhere,
It has ears everywhere in this world,
And it exists  as every thing in this world.

Kavim purana anusasithara-,
Manoramaneeyaam  samanusmaredhya,
Sarvasya  dhataram  machinthya roopa-
Madithya varnam  thamasa parasthath.                          4(8-9)

Think of Him , as ancient, spread everywhere,
Ruler of all,  much subtler  part of an atom,
Protector of all with his form which is beyond thought,
With the colour of Sun and transcendental beyond dark thoughts.

Oordhwamoolamadha sakham,
Aswatham  prahooravyayam,
Chandamsi  yasya parnani,
Yastham  Veda sa Vedavith.                                                   5(15-1)

With roots above and branches Growing down,
This Banyan tree  with Vedas as its leaves,
Is everlasting and immortal,
And whosoever knows it, really  knows  the Vedas.

Sarvasya chaham, hrudhi sannivishto,
Matha  smrithir  jnana mapohanam cha,
Vedaischa  sarvaii , rahameva Vedhyo,
Vedanthakruth veda vidheva  chaham.                                     6(15-15)

I live in everybody’s heart,
And from me one gets,
Memory , wisdom and forgetfulness,
And for all the Vedas , I am the one that is to be known,
For I created them and I am the one who knows them.

Manmana  bhava Mad bhaktho,
Madhyajee maam Namakuru,
Mamevaishyasi sathyam they,
Prathijane priyo asi may.                                                           7(18-65)

Concentrate your mind on me,
Always show devotion to me,
Sacrifice for me, salute me,
And I swear to you because you are dear to me,
That  definitely  you will reach me.

Chathu Sloki Gita
(Gita in four verses)

(These 4 verses (8-11) occurring in the tenth chapter  of Bhagwad Gita viz the “essence of God” is considered by large number of savants as the essence of the Gita  but appears to me as containing a succinct definition of the  “way of devotion(Bhakthi Marga) “ of Bhagwad Gita, I am here giving the meaning of these 4 verses in a simple transparent language. Those interested in commentary are requested to visit http://www.ramanuja.org/sv/bhakti/archives/sep98/0077.html

Aaham sarvasya prabhavo,
Matha sarvam pravarthate,
Ithi mathwa bhajanthe maam,
Budha bhava samanvitha.                                                   10-8

The wise  man with devotion,
Sings praises of me  understanding that,
I am the power behind everything,
And everything works because of me.

Math chitha math gatha prana,
Bodayantha parasparam,
Kadayanthascha maam nithyam,
Thooshyanthi cha ramanthi cha.                                          10-9

The wise men thinking about me,
And devoting their lives to me,
Talk with each other about me,
And become satisfied and  happy.

Tesham sathatha yukthanam,
Bhajatham preethi poorvakam,
Dadahami budhi yogam tham,
Yena maam upayanthi they.                                                   10-10

They always sing my prayers,
With love and concentration,
And I grant them unified  wisdom,
So that they can attain  me.

Tesham yevanukambartha,
Aham agnanajam thama,
Nasayamyath  mabhavastha,
Jnana deepena bhaswatha.                                                       10-11

With great compassion for them,
Dwelling deep in their heart of hearts,
I destroy their darkness of ignorance,
With a shining lamp of wisdom.

Tri Sloki Gita
(Gita in three verses)
(Many savants believe  that the verses number 18,17 and 18 from the chapter number 15 which details “the sign of the supreme personality” of Bhagwad Gita is the essence of Gita. I have given below the simple translation of these verses. Detailed commentary is available in  http://krishnascience.com/Vaisnava%20Library/Courses%20-%20seminars/Bhagavad%20gita/Bhagavad%20Gita%20Bhakti%20Sastri%20Degree/Bhagavadgita%20notes/Bhagavad%20Gita%20%20esence%20-%20tri%20sloki.htm
   )

Dwavimou  purushou loke,
Ksharakshara  eva cha,
Kshara sarvani bhoothani,
Kootastho aakshara eva cha.                            15-16

Two type of men exist,
The  fallible and infallible,
All living things are fallible,
And infallible among them are those,
Who are merged with the principle of God.

Uthamam purushasthwanya,
Paramathmethyudahyatha,
Yo loka trayamavisya,
Bibhartha vyaya Iswara.                                       15-17

But greatest among those is another,
Supreme self , who is said to be,
That lord who is spread all over,
And maintains the three parts of the universe.

Yasmath kshara matheetho  aham,
Aksharathapi chothama,
 Atho asmo loke  Vede cha,
Praditha purushothama.                                           15-18

Because I am  beyond  the fallible one,
And greatest among the infallible ones,
The world and the books of Vedas,
Call me  as the most  supreme personality.

Eka Sloki Gita

(Though this sloka does not talk about the teaching of Gita, It is termed as Eka Sloki Gita, It is also included in the Vishnu Sahasranamam)

Yathra Yogeeswara Krushno,
Yatha Partho Dhanurdhara,
Thathra  srirvijayo bhoothir,
Druva neethir mama.                                            18-78

Where Krishna the God of Yogis is there,
And where Arjuna , the expert archer is there,
Wealth , victory, improvement and Justice,
Will be there definitely for ever.

(In the year  1987  , the   Ramananda  sagar’s  Ramayana story   was broadcast in TV .I am not exageerating when I say   that  whole India froze for that  one hour. Meetings , including cabinet meetings   were postphoned, so that people can see and hear   that Ramayana .The  greatest part of the serial  was  the  “Story of Ramayana as sung by  Luv and Kush”  in each episode  . The music for the   great song was  composed  byRavindra  Jain and he  himself   sung the mesmerized song . I alwaus thought hundreds  of English translation   would be available   for that  song and so I was  greatly surprised  to see  that  , google search could not  locate  the  translation of the song. So I attempted   to do it .I am sure  I was  inadequate  for the job   and any way I did it.Here  is my English translation   and  hear it as well as see  it  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=giTipGJ5-Y0  )

There was a great festival  in ciry of Janaka , there   was great festival in city of Janak,
For the pretty  girl Sita    would    choose her groom

Janakpur utsav hain bhaari , Janak raj ka kathin pran
Suno suno sab koi , Jo tode shiv dhanush ko
So sita pati hoye , Jo tore shiv dhanush kathor

There is a great festival in city of Janaka, the great  soul of king  Janaka,
Please hear, hear  every one, he who brakes the   bow of Shiva,
Would become  the  husband of Sita , he who  brakes  the  bow  of Shiva

Every one’s look was towards Rama, for Rama  was incarnation  of humility,
Taking on his head   the order of His Guru, in an ordinary fashion , he broke  the  bow of Shiva

Janak suta sang naata joda , Raghuvar jaisa aur na koi..
Sita ki samata nahin hoyi , Jo kare parajit kaanti koti rati kaam ki

The  great one of Raghu  and no one else   , established   relationship   with daughter  of Janaka
And there  was no one   equal to Sita, by her luster she defeated  one  crore Rathis

Hum katha sunate ram sakal gundham ki
Yeh ramayan hai punya katha siya ram ki

We are making  you hear  the story  of Rama , the treasure  of all  that is good,
This is the  holy story of Ramayana  , the  story  of Sitaram

Sab par shabd mohini daali
Mantramugdha bhaaye sab nar naari
Yun din rain jaat hain beete
Lav-kush ne sab ke mann jeete

On every one  the bewitching   words were put,
And all  men and ladies became   enchanted by the words,
And several    days  and nights   were spent ,
And every one’s  mind was won over by  Lava   and Kusha

Van gaman sita haran hanumat milan
Lanka dehen ravan maran
Ayodhya punaraagaman
Sab vistar katha sunaayi

They    all heard  in detail   the stories of,
Going to forest  , kidnapping of sita, meeting  with  Hanuman,
Burning  of Lanka  , killing  of Ravan,
And again coming   back to Ayodya

Raja ram bhaye raghuraai
Ram-raj aayo sukh daayi
Sukh samriddhi shrii gharghar aayi

The Raghu Ram  became the king Ram  ,
And Rama’s rule  came as comfort giving,
Happiness   and prosperity   came  in every home,

Kaal chakra ne ghatna kram mein
Aisa chakra chalaya
Ram siya ke jeevan mein
Phir ghor andhera chaaya!!

In the series  of events, the wheel of time,
Spun   such a wheel,
In the life of Sita   and Rama  ,
That again   big darkness   came about

Avadh mein aisa aisa ek din aaya
Nishkalank pe praja ne
Mithya dosh lagaya!!
Avadh mein aisa aisa ek din aaya

In the country of Avadh  , one such day came  ,
The people  found an imaginative   fault,
On the one who   does not have any stain
In the country of Avadh , one such day came

Leaving every thing Sita  went off for all love of relations is due to passion,
But in the stone like  minds, the fire of revenge did not wake up

Mamtamayi maaonke Aanchal bhi simat kar reh gaye
Gurudev gyan aur neeti ke Sagar bhi ghat kar rehgaye….

Even the uppercloths of  the very   affectionate mothers   appeared very much shrunk,
And even the ocean like   wisdom   and justice  of God like Guru  , appeared   to flow  below the ghats

Na raghukul na raghukul nayak
Koi na hua sia ka sahayak…
Maanavta ko kho baithe jab
Sabhya nagar ke vaasi

No  clan of Raghus or the  lord of that clan,
Were there  to provide  help to  Sita,
And every one   of the  people of that  civilized city,
Seemed to have  lost their  humanity

Tab sita ko hua sahayak
Van ka ek sanyaasi….

At that  time  one sage of the  forest,
Became the   help to Sita

Un rishi param udaar ka
Valmiki shubh naam
Sita ko aashray diya
Le aaye nij dham..

That   Sage who was   very generous,
Had the holy name of Valmiki,
And he provided  support  to Sita
And provided   her the   real  home to live

Raghukul mein kuldeep jalaye..
Ram ke do sut siya ne jaaye..

The lamp of the clan  of Raghus was lit,
And Sita gave  Ram   two sons

Shrota gan jo ek raja ki putri hain
Ek raja ki putrvadhu hain
Aur ek chakravati samrat ki patni hain
Wohi maharani sita
Vanvaas ke dukho mein
Apne dino kaise kaat ti hain

Oh audiences she    was the daughter of a king,
She was the daughter in law of another king,
And she   was the wife of  a very great emperor,
And that   great  queen Sita
And yet how did she spend her days ,
Of  her  great   sorrowful days  in  the forest

Apne kul ke gaurav aur
Swabhimaan ki raksha karte huye
Kisi se sahayta maange bina
Kaise apna kaam woh swayam karti hain…
Swayam van se lakdi kaant ti hain
Swayam apna dhaan kootti hain
Swayam apni chakki peesti hain
Aur apni santaanonko
Swavalambi banana,
Ki shiksha kaise deti hain

Protecting the   respectability of her clan,
Protecting    her great  self respect  ,
Without begging for help from any one,
She herself was cutting   wood in the forest  ,
She herself    cleaned  her own grains ,
She herself powdered the grain in the mortar,
And she made her children,
Depend only on themselves
And that   is how she gave them lessons

Ab uski karun jhaani dekhiye.
Janak dulari kulavadhu  Dasharath ji ki raj rani ho
Ke din van mein bitati hain……
Rehti thi gheri jise
Das- dasi aato yam
Daasi bani apni

Now   see about   her very pitiable life,
The darling    daughter  of Janaka became the queen of  kingdom of dasaratha,
How does   she spend her time in the forest,
She who used to live like an empress    served by ten servant maids ,
All the twenty four hours
And she has now become a   servant herself

Udaasi ko chupati hain…
Dharam praveena
Sati param kulina sab
Vidhi dosh-hina
Jina dukh mein sikhati hain

That great  lady  of Dharma ,
Was hiding her tiredness
She who was most virtuous  innocent lady ,
Has been punished by fate.
And made  to learn to live  in sorrow

Jagmata hari-priya lakshmi swarupa siya
Koothhi  hain dhaan bhoj swayam banati hain
Kathin kulhadi leke lakdiya kaant ti hain
Karam likhe ko par kaat nahi paati hain…

Sita, the mother of the world  , the darling of Hari   who has the    form of Lakshmi,
Herself   pounded the grain and  prepareed    herself the food,
She took    a hard axe   and sliced  the   fire wood herself,
Though fate has written like that and  she was not able to cut

Phool bhi uthana bhaari jis sukumari ko tha
Dukh bhari jeevan woh uthathi hain

That tender  lady to whom even flower was heavy,
was lifting    this life   filled    with sorrow

Ardhangi raghuveer ki woh dhare dheer
Bharti hai neer neer jal mein nehlati hain
Jiske prajake apvaadon
Kuchakra mein

She who is the   better half of Rama, with great  cheer,
Filled up water   and she mixed the bad words  of the bad days
Of the citizens    in that   water   itself,

Peesti hai chaaki
Swabhiman bachati hain….
Paalti hain bachchonko
Woh karmayogini ke bhaati
Swavalambi sabal banati hain

She  mixed     the dough  ,
And saved  her self respect  ,
She   nurtured   her children,
Just like  one who is detached,
And thus made them   strong   and self dependent

Aisi sita mata ki pariksh leti
Nithur niyati ko daya bhi nahi aati hain…

Does not     this  , a cruel  justice  become kind  ,
When taking   examination   of such a great   mother Sita

O…us dukhiya ke raj-dulaare…
Hum hi sut shrii ram tihaare….
O….sita maa ki aankh ki taare…ee …
Lav-kush hain pitu naam hamare….
He pitu bhagya hamare jaage
Ram katha kahe ram ke aage……

WE are  the princely son of   that  sorrowing lady,
WE are   your sons  oh lord Rama,
We are  the stars of the eyes of mother  Sita,
And the  names  given to us are Luv and Kush
Oh our lucky father   wake up,
WE are telling the story of Ram before Ram

श्रोतागण, जो एक राजा की पुत्री है, एक राजा की पुत्रवधू है, और एक चक्रवर्ती राजा की पत्नी है, वही महारानी सीता वनवास के दुखों में अपने दिन कैसे काटती है. अपने कुल के गौरव और स्वाभिमान के रक्षा करते हुए, किसी से सहायता मांगे बिना कैसे अपना काम वो स्वयं करती है, स्वयं वन से लकड़ी काटती है, स्वयं अपना धान कूटती है, स्वयं अपनी चक्की पीसती है, और अपनी संतान को स्वावलंबी बनने की शिक्षा कैसे देती है अब उसकी एक करुण झांकी देखिये;
