Devi Shatkam

Devi Shatkam
(The six verse  prayer to Goddess)

Translated by
P.R.Ramachander

Amba  Sashi  bimba vadane  , Kambu greeve   Katora  kucha kumbhe
Ambara samana madhye sambara  aripu vairi . devi  maam pahi

Oh mother  with moon like face , conch like neck, very hard pot like  breasts
Who has sky like middle, who is  friend of enemy  of SAmbara , Oh Goddess  protect me

Kundha mukulaagra danthaam kumkuma  pankena liptha  kucha  bharaam,
Aaneela neela dehaam  ambaam  akhilanda  nayakim   vandhe

She who hasteeth like buds of jasmine flower, who has heavy breasts with touch of  kumkuma,
Who has a bluish white  body, the mother who is leader of   the entire  universe , salutations

Sa rig a ma  pa dha  ni sa thaanthaam veenaa sankrantha charu  hasthaam thaam,
Saanthaam   mrudula  swaanthaam, kuch bhara  thaanthaam namami   shiva kaanthaam

She who is the web of notes Sa, ri, ga, ma, pa da, ni sand  who plays  veena with her  pretty hands
Who is peaceful, soft and auspicious, who is bent due to heavy breasts, I salute   consort of shiva

Arata thata ghatika jootee  thaaditha leeka pala thadangaam
Veena vaadana velaa kampitha sirasaam namami  mathangim

She who swirls like  the path of the sound  of her anklets  and dances  with energy ,
And who nods  her head  while  playing  the veena, I am saluting  that Matangi

Veena rasa anushangaam vikacha madha modha  madhuri  brungaam
Karunaa pooritha   thararangam  kalaye mathanga  kanyakaa pangam

She  who brilliantly mixes  the    sound of veena happily attracting sweet bees,
She whose steps  are filled  with mercy and urges  the  daughter of Mathanga  to take hold

Dhaya maanaadhi   deerga nayanaam desika roopena darsithaa  abhiyudhayaam
Vama  kucha nihitha veenaam varadhaam   sangeetha  mathrukaam   vandhe

She who has long eyes   showing mercyand improves us when seen as  a teacher
She who keeps  Veena on her left breast, one who gives boons and is the model of music, I salute her

Maanikhya veenaan upalalayanthim, madhalasam manjula vaag vilaasaam
Mahendra   neela dhyuthi  komalaangim , mathanga  kanyam manasa smarami

I meditate on the daughter of Matanga,
Who plays the veena made of precious gems,
Who has become lazy due to her exuberance,
Who is blessed with very sweet words,
Who has a pretty mien which shines like the blue gem.
