(You children belong to Tamil Nadu .Your mother toungue is Tamil. Due to migration of your parents , you are not living in Tamil Nadu and do not know how to read Tamil or understand literary Tamil . All of you have seen your parents praying to God and you too want to. Here is a compilation in English to help you .Some important Gods are listed. And introduced The prayer addressed to them is typed in English and English meaning given .Humble request to you all from this Granpa called Raja Thatha. 1.Lord Ganesa

(He is son of Lord Shiva. He has an elephant face. He rides on a mouse.In Tamil he is called “pillayar” Children pray to him before going to exam.)

Athangarai orathile, arasa marathu nizhalile

Veethirukkum pillayar , vinaikal theerkkum pillayar.

Ganesa who sits in the shade of Banyan tree

By the side of the banks of the river, The Ganesa who solves problems.

2.Lord Muruga

(He is also son of Lord Shiva.He rides on a peacock. Most of his temples in Tamil Nadu are on the top of the hill. He is called as Muruga or Kandha in Tamil)

Abhayam arulvai , Murugaa,

Anugraham Tharaai , Murugaa,

Adaikkalam neeye Murugaa

Adbutha roopaa, Murugaa

Give me protection oh Muruga,

Give me your blessings , oh Muruga,

You are our refuge , Oh Muruga,

Oh Muruga with a wonderful form.

3.Lord Vishnu

(He is a God who looks after the world. He rides on an eagle and sleeps on a serpent .He is blue in colour. For protecting the world he is born in the world in several forms( incarnations).Rama and Krishna are his incarnation)

3.a. Lord Guruvayurappan

(he is one of the forms of Vishnu .He has a great temple in a place called Guruvayur in Kerala)

Guruvayurukku varungal –oru,

Kuzhanthai chirippathai parungal,

Oru vai choru ootum thai mun,

Utkarnthiruppathai kanumgal.

Please come to Guruvayur,

Please see one baby who is laughing.

See it sitting before its mother ,

Who is feeding it one mouth of rice.

3.b. Lord Sreenivasa

( He is another popular form of Vishnu .His temple is on the top of seven mountains and so he is called Ezhumalayan. His temple is in Andhra Pradesh . It is one of the richest temple of the world)

Yezhu malaikal yeri vanthaal , Srinivasa,

Yethamellam, Thanthiduvai , Srinivasa,

Kadu malai kadanthu vanthal, Srinivasa,

Kakshi nee thanthiduvai , Venkaesa

Kuraikal pala Sumanthu vanthal, Srinivasa,

If we come to you after climbing seven mountains , Oh Srinivasa,

You would grant us great benefits , Oh Lord who lives in truth,

If we cross forests and mountains and come to you , Oh Srinivasa,

You would show us yourself , Oh Venkatesa,

If we carry lot of problems and come before you , Oh Srinivasa,

You would change them as benefits, Oh Lord who stays forever,

3.c.Lord Ranganatha

(This is considered to be the largest temple of Lord Vishnu in India. Here he is shown as sleeping on his serpent (Adhisesha bed), He is one of the important forms of Lord Vishnu)

Paal kudathai nokki padayedukkum yerumbukalaai,

Thol kudathai thotha varum theevira vyadhikal yellam,

Maal padutha arangan , mani vanaan per cholla,

Vaal churutti kollumaame perumale?

All the ants which are marching towards the pot of milk,

And all the serious diseases which come to affect the Skin pot(body)

When we chant the name of Lord Ranganatha who is lying down,

It seems would fold their tails , is it not,Oh Lord?

3.d Lord Rama

(He is the second human incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Instead of becoming a king, he obeyed his parents words and went to frest. There he killed one very ogre with ten heads called Ravana. After that he ruled his country.When people in India want to talk of good government they say , Lord Rama’s government)

Yennuyirum Ramare , yen moochum Ramare ,

Yen idhayam Ramare , Yen Vaazkkai Ramare,

Yen Kankal Ramare, Kanmaniyum Ramare,

Yen mana thirayil yeppavum malarum avar roopame,

Yen mooLai yeppavum thudippavar Padhame

3.e. Lord Krishna

(he is the most popular incarnation of lOrd Vishnu . He was mischievous as well very wise ,It was he who taught Bhagawad Gita, the most important hindu religious book to Arjuna)

Kuzhalai oothiye Kanna Odi vanthidu,

Kuzhalin inimayai Kanna AAdi vanthidu

Karunai cheithida ini yenna thayakkamo

Kaar mukhil vanna neeyum odi va thidu

Playing the flute , come running Krishna,

As sweetness of flute come dancing Krishna

What is the delay in showing your kindness

Oh Krishna of the colour of Black cloud , You also come running

3 f Hanuman

(Hanuman a God in monkey form helped Rama a lot and he blessed him to live forever. We believe he is alive)

Mannuyir kathu manam nirainda Hanuman,
Thanniruthaal pothi, thanja kavacham ponnaga,
Yennavil uditha yeramba ganapathiye,
Unnarulal uyarthu.

I pray the two feet of highly contended Hanuman,
Who protects the lives of all in this earth,
Oh Herambha Ganapathi , please make ,
This surrender armour which arose in my toungue,
In to gold using your total grace.

4.Goddess Lakshmi

(she is the wife of Lord Vishnu. She was born from the sea and is the Goddess of wealth)

Hariyudaya devi azhagi, namasthe,
Adaintharkku inbam alippay, namasthe,
Vana malai yenum maruve , namasthe.
Vaikunda vasiyudan magizhvay , namasthe. 3

Oh pretty one who is wife of Lord Vishnu, salutations,
Please give happiness to those who reach you, salutations,

Please be happy with lord who lives in Vaikunta, salutations.

(Along with Lord Vishnu , he is the most important God of Hinduism. He is in charge of punishment and destruction. He lives on the top of Himalaya Mountain)

Please give me boons , for me to serve you,

5.aLord Shiva

3. creation, upkeep, destruction, obscuration and revelation

6.Goddess Parvathi

(She is the wife of Lord Shiva. She has two sons-Muruga and Ganesa.She has been helping human beings whenever they pray.She is possibly most important Goddess,She has very many great temples in Tamil Nadu)

.Roja poo kondu vandhe –engal Rajarajeswariyai poojai cheythal,
Desadhi desam mechum Rajavai pola vazha cheyval.

If you bring rose flowers and worship our Rajarajeswari ,
She would make you live like a king appreciated by all countries.

7.Saraswathi

(She is the goddess of learnind and wife of Lord Brahma )

mAdhar theengural paattil iruppal
makkaL pESum mazhalaiyil uLLAL
geetham pAdum kuyilin kuralai
kiLiyin naavai iruppidum kondAL

.She would be in the songs sung by ladies with sweet voice,

She would be in the lisping words of little babies.

She would be sitting on the toungue of the koel singing songs,

And also in the toungue of the birds.

8.Shirdi sai

(he is not a God but is saint who is worshipped like God.He has a huge temple near Mumbai. It again is one of the richest temples of the World)

Anandam alikka varum Sai !

2. Please come to remove my sorrow Sai !

8.aShirdi sai

Dukham pokka vaarum Sai,

Aanandam alikka vaarum Sai ,

Cheai umai azhaithen Sai ,

Thai manothudu ilaguvai Sai (Vaarum…)

Your child is calling you , Sai,

Please melt with a mind of mother , Sai

9.Lord Ayyappa

(God Ayyappa is the son of Lord Vishnu as well as Lord Shiva.He was found in a forest by a king of Pandalam in Kerala.He is an extremely popular God and millions of Pilgrims visit him every year.Normally he is greeted with saranam but in this prayer he is greeted with haraharohara which is common to Lord Muruga)

Yengum niranithavanukku haraharohara,

Yengal kula deivathukku Haraharo hara,
sathya swaroopqanukku haraharo hara,

Antha sathru samharanukku haraharohara

Salutation to him who is filled up everywhere,

Salutations to our family god

Salutation to the god who is form of truth
