Hayagreeva Ashtotharam

Hayagreeva Ashtotharam
Translated by
P.R.Ramachander

(Lord Hayagreeva   is considered as an incarnation of Lord Vishnu with a head of a horse, There is a story that that , the devas were greatly troubled with a horse headed Asura called Hayagreeva  ,When the Devas went to appeal to Lord Vishnu he was in deep meditation leaning on his bow. The devas sought the help of termited to wake up Lord Vishnu.  The termites ate away the string of the bow  cutting off the head of Lord Vishnu. But Lord Vishnu   developed a horse head in  the place of his head and that form of Lord Vishnu was called as Hayagreeva. Lord Vishnu killed   the asura called  Hayagreeva . There is another story that the Asuras Madhu and Kaidabha  stole the Vedas  disintegrated the Vedas and Lord Vishnu took the form of  Hayagreeva recovered the Vedas and compiled it  back,
Lord Hayagreeva   is considered as   the God of knowledge and teacher   to the Goddess Saraswathi  He has a human body with the head of a horse   , wears white garments and sits  on a white lotus flower .He holds a book of knowledge in his hand . The savants following the Visishtadwaitha  and the Dwaitha   tradiutions attach very great importance to his worship,  There is a stotra  which says,

Na Hayagreevath param  athi mangalam,
Na Hayagreevath   param   asthi paavanam,
Na  Hayagreevath   param asthi daivatham,
Na  Hayreevam pranipathya  seedathi

Meaning
No auspiciousness  is greater than Hayagreeva
Nothing  is  more   sacred   than Hayagreeva  ,
There is no god greater  than Hayagreeva ,
And no one who  surrenders to Hayagreeva repents,

There are several temples dedicated   to this great divine God  of wisdom.)
