Dwadasa Stotra of Madhwa charya -1

(Dwaadasha stotras are a collection of twelve stotras in praise of Lord Sri Vishnu, composed by Srimad Ananda Teertha (also called Sriman Madhwacharya and Sri Poornaprajna) .Though there are 12 wstotras in  Dwadasa stotra, I have translated only the First one)


Vandhe  Vandhyam  sadaanandam , vasudevam  , niranjanam
Indhirapathimaadhyaadhi varadesa  vara pradham  1,1

I salute   the one who can be saluted, who is always happy. Who is vasudeva without any stains
Who is  Lord of Goddess  Lakshmi,  who gives  boons to other  Gods, who themselves  give boons.

Namami  Nikhilaadeesam, kirreta  grushta  peetavath,
Hrutham, samane   arkhabham, pada  pankajam    1.2

When the devas  who are  lord of world  ,salute  him with their crowns   touching  his feet,
Which is like lotus, which destroys the darkness of ignorance like   the   rays  of the sun.

Jaambhoo nadhambara  dharma nithambham chinthyameesithu,
Swarna  manjeera samveetham aaroodam  Jagadambhayaa  1.3

He who wears  a golden cloth, with waist tied by a  golden band,
And the  mother of the world   sits with her  hand  round his waist.

Udharam    chinmayam eesasya thanuthwe  api akhilambaram,
Vali thrayaangitham  nithyam    aaroodam  sriyaikayaa.    1.4

The God’s  , holding  belly  is  small and divine  but holds  entire universe,
It has three lines on it and  always embraced  by the goddess   and we should  meditate on it.

Smaraneeyamuro Vishno indiraa  vasamuthamam,
Anantham  anthavadiva bhoojayor   antharangatham   1.5

I meditate  on the   chest of Lord Vishnu, where  Goddess Lakshmi  lives,
And though  it is endless , it is limited   by the god’s   two hands.

Shankha chakra  gadhaa  padma dharaa chinthyaa   harer  bhujaa,
Peena  vrutha  jagad  rakshaa kevalo udhyogino   anisam.  1.6

Meditatate on the  Vishnu’s four hands  holding conch, wheel, mace  and lotus,
And  which are  round and full  with  the job of protecting  the world always.

SAnthatham chinthyeth kantam, bhaswath  kausthubha   bhasakam,
Vaikuntasyakhilaa vedhaa  udgeeyabthe   anisam  anisam  yathaa.   1,7

I always  meditate  on  the  neck  shining  with luster of kausthubha  gem,
Of Lord  Narayana, where always   the Vedas  are chanted   without break.

Smaretha  Yamini  Nadha saharamitha kaanthimath,
Bhavathaa  paapanodheedyam, sri  pathe  mukha  pankajam.  1.8

I meditate on the  lotus like face of Lord of Goddess Lakshmi,
shining  like thousand  full moons, which removes ties of samsara  as well as sin

Poornaan anya  sukhod bhasim  andhasmitha mardhasithu,
Govindhaaya  sadhaa  chinthyam  nithyananda  padha  pradham   1,9

IN his face  there   is a smile   which grants   you salvation,
And so  always  think of Govinda who grants eternal  joy.

Smaraami  bhava  santhaapa haanidhamrutha sagaram,
Poornaanandasya ramasya saanuraghavalokanam. 1.10

Meditate on his look  which is a sea of nectar capable  of removing Karma as well  as Sorrow,
For  ever joyful  Rama  grants full blessing to us all  .

Dhyayedhdh ajasthrameesasya pankhajaadhi  pratheekshitham,
Broo bhangam parameshtyaadhi padhadhayi  vimukthidham.  1.11

Meditate   on the twitch   of his eye brow which gave power to Lord Brahma  ,
And  because of it Brahma   and others   wait for it  which will give salvation.

Santhatham  chinthaye anantham anthakale  viseshatha,
Naivodhaapu grunathostham yadh gunaanaam  ajaadhaya    1,12

Always  think of Anantha  especially   at the time of death,
For his extra ordinary  qualities have never  been understood by  great Gods


Ithi Srimad  aananda theertha  bhagawath  padacharya virachitha,
Dwadasa   stothreshu  pradhama stotram   sampoornam.

Thus ends  the first  prayer  of  the twelve  Prayers  , composed by
Sri anantha  theertha  bhagawad pada.
