 made  him sit on his lap just like  a guardian

Poonthanam was possibly one of the greatest fore runners of Bhakthi cult in Kerala and his greatest work was Jnana Pana, Loosely it can be translated as “Pot of Knowledge”. But “pana” here is not pot but a style of folk poem. This is written in a common man’s language and in a common man’s verse. It preaches the greatness of repetition (singing) of the Holy God’s names. In between Poonthanam wrote about the world he saw and the world he wanted to see. Some people term it as the “Bhagavad Geetha of Malayalam”

തേനമൃതാകുന്ന ജ്ഞാനപ്പാന

മാധുര്യമോടെ കുടിച്ചോരാ കണ്ണന്‍റെ

കാരുണ്യമോര്‍ത്തെന്‍ മിഴി നിറഞ്ഞു

 

Nishkama  bakthiyaal  poonthanam yekunna

Then amrutha maakunna  Jnanapana

Madhuryamode kudichoar  kannande

Karunyamorthen  mizhi niranju

 

The honey  nectar  of Jnanapana,

Which was  given by Poonthanam with detached devotion

Thinking  of  the  mercy  of Krishna

Who drank it with sweetness , my eyes got filled up

பற்றுதல் அகற்றி பவவினை தீர்த்து

Pathuthal agathi , Bhava  vinai  theerthu

Nar gathi  alithidum  Gopalan

 

Kepping  his golden feet  on serpent of anthill

The Gopala  who danced

Removing attachment , putting an end to bad  fate

And one giving  good salvation  is  gopala

Unni  kuda  vayar  nannayi  nirakkuvaan

Unniyappam   tharaam  , Paal  tharaam Deva

 

To fll  the   belly  of the  baby

I will give  Unniyappam( small round  jaggery snack) and I will give milk

 

അന്തരംഗത്തിലെ അത്ഭുതമല്ലോ

ലോകാധി നായകാ ദേവാ നമോസ്തുതേ.

Lokadhi  nayaya  Deva  Namosthuthe
