Poonthanam was possibly one of the greatest fore runners of Bhakthi cult in Kerala and his greatest work was Jnana Pana, Loosely it can be translated as “Pot of Knowledge”. But “pana” here is not pot but a style of folk poem. This is written in a common man’s language and in a common man’s verse. It preaches the greatness of repetition (singing) of the Holy God’s names. In between Poonthanam wrote about the world he saw and the world he wanted to see. Some people term it as the “Bhagavad Geetha of Malayalam”

പൂന്താനപ്പാനയിലൂടെ ഞാനാദ്യമായ്
വാതാലയേശനേ തൊട്ടറിഞ്ഞു
കൃഷ്ണാ നിന് ഭക്തവാത്സല്യമറിഞ്ഞു ഞാന്
പൂന്താനപ്രേമവും ഞാനറിഞ്ഞു

And I knew about the love of Poonthanam
നിഷ്കാമ ഭക്തിയാല് പൂന്താനമേകുന്ന
തേനമൃതാകുന്ന ജ്ഞാനപ്പാന
മാധുര്യമോടെ കുടിച്ചോരാ കണ്ണന്റെ
കാരുണ്യമോര്ത്തെന് മിഴി നിറഞ്ഞു
Nishkama bakthiyaal poonthanam yekunna
Then amrutha maakunna Jnanapana
Madhuryamode kudichoar kannande
Karunyamorthen mizhi niranju
The honey nectar of Jnanapana,
Which was given by Poonthanam with detached devotion
Thinking of the mercy of Krishna
Who drank it with sweetness , my eyes got filled up
കാര്മുകില്വര്ണ്ണന്റെ കാരുണ്യം കൊണ്ടിതാ
കൺമുമ്പില് കണ്ടു ഞാന് പൂന്താനത്തെ
കണ്ണന്റെ ലീലയില് മുങ്ങിക്കുളിക്കുമാ
മള്ളിയൂരാം ഭക്തപൂന്താനത്തെ
Kar mukhil varnande karunyam konditha
Kan mumbil kandu jnaan Poonthanathe
Kannande leelayil mungi kulikkumaa
Malliyooraam Baktha poonthanathe
Due to mercy Krishna who was black like a rich cloud
I saw before my eyes, the Poonthanam
Who was devotee poonthanam belonging to Malliyur
Who dips and take bath in the sports of Krishna
ഭാഗവതോത്തമാ അങ്ങതന് തൃപ്പാദം
ഭക്തിയോടെവം നമിക്കുന്നു ഞാന്
കൃഷ്ണനിലെന്നെനും പ്രേമമേറിടുവാന്
തൃക്കരം ചേര്ത്തോന്നനുഗ്രഹിക്കൂ
Bhagawathothamaa Anguthan Trippadham
Bakthiyodevam namikkunnu jnaan
Krishanil yennennum premam yeriduvan
Trikkaram cherthonnu anugrahikku
Oh great and wise devotee , your divine feet
