Sathyanarayana Ashtothara

Sathyanarayana Ashtothara

Translated by
P.R.Ramachander

(God Sathyanarayana is another form of Lord Vishnu. He too has four hands but  by the hand in which lOrd Vishnu   holds the lotus flower   he shows  the sign of blessing. HE is considered as the embodiment of truth Normally pooja is performed by him in the homes on the full moon day, after  observing penance throughout the day. After the pooja    the  story of how  Lord Sathyanarayana   helped  his devotees  is read to the audience and then Prasada   distributed and partaken . The Sathyanarayana vrutha is observed  maily in Karnataka , Andhara, Telengana , Gujarat , Bengal,. Orissa , Maharashtra   and Goa.It is believed that  the penance and the pooja help  the devotees to overcome all adversities and resolve all problems. Apart from the full moon day , it is common to observe  during all joyful  auspicious occasions .It is believed that  if you are invited for a pooja, you have to attend and should not return without eating the sweet dish offered to God. Bhagawan Ramana Ashtotharam

Bhagawan Ramana  Ashtotharam

By
Sri Viswanatha Swami

Translated by
P.R.Ramachander

(Bhagwan Ramana  was great saint who lived among  us till 1950.I think that just to call him a saint  is not at all sufficient. He was a God  who came to light  up this world and enthuse  the world to know   about the  great philosophy of thoughts of Hinduism .He was born as Sri Venkatraman  in a small village called Thiruchuzhi   in the year 1879 .At the age of sixteen he left Madurai  , where he was studying school  and reached  Thiruvannamalai mountain. There are no records of any Guru for him nor is there any mention that  he took Sanyasa. He spent his time  in absoulute lonliness for several years  before he was recognized as   a great spiritual master. Millions of people all over the world were attracted to the teachings of this simple man  who never accepted personal gifts and never treated   a person  in a differential manner.. This Ashtottara has been written by one of his scholarly disciples ,It was translated by Prof.K.Swaminathan  in to English and published by Ramanashram in the year1984. Since the orinal text  was not available on line , I had translated it in my own words and posted it here . A devotee  using it should  chant a name , then offer a  flower to the image  of Bhagwan Ramana. I am sure that man God would  bring your mind to peace and rest and  clarify all the doubts   that  arise in your mind for it is believed” The flame is still there as it was. The paradox is that the flame feeds the candle and not the candle the flame.”

Sudarshana ashtotharam

Sudarshana ashtotharam

Translated by
P.R.Ramachander

(Sudarshana   is the wheel like weapon wielded by  Lord Vishnu. It seems that Sanjana  the  daughter of Viswakarma , the deva architect married lOrd Sun and due to the great heat of the sun was not able to live with him. Then as per the request of Sun God  , Viswakarma sawed the sun God and made him shine less  . Out of the dust collected    The Sudarshana Chakra     was made and given to Lord Vishnu as weapon.  It is considered as the most powerful weapon in Hinduism. It is supposed to have ten million spikes  in two rows moving in opposite directions.  It is told about Sudarasana Chakra that

 tvaṁ dharmas tvam ṛtaṁ satyaṁ
tvaṁ yajño ’khila-yajña-bhuk
tvaṁ loka-pālaḥ sarvātmā
tvaṁ tejaḥ pauruṣaṁ param (Srimad Bhagawatham)

"O Sudarśana wheel, you are religion, you are truth, you are encouraging statements, you are sacrifice, and you are the enjoyer of the fruits of sacrifice. You are the maintainer of the entire universe, and you are the supreme transcendental prowess in the hands of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. You are the original vision of the Lord, and therefore you are known as Sudarśana. Everything has been created by your activities, and therefore you are all-pervading”
In many temples of  South India Sudarshana chakra has   separate temple and is reverentially   referred as  “Chakrathu Azhvar:
Lord Bharatha the younger brother of Rama is  considered as  the incarnation of Sudarshana chakra .  There are some references saying that king Karthaveeryarjuna was another incarnation. The present royal dynasty ruling Thailand is called “Chakri dynasty” after the Sudarshana Chakra. A great fire worship addressing the Sudarasgana Chakra   is performed to attain, health, wealth and prosperity. It also is supposed to clean the mind and body of the person who performs the Homa .Let us pray   this great devotee  and greatest weapons   tocleanse ourselves of all sins.)

Shiva Ashtothram

Shiva Ashtothram
(108 names of Lord Shiva

Translated by
P.R.Ramachander

(Lord Shiva   is one of the  great trinity of Gods  along with Lord Vishnu   and Lord Brahma .  He is referred  in the Vedas  as Lord Rudra (indicating he was angry)  and in the post Vedic times  he is referred  to as Lord Shiva(indicating he was peaceful) , He has several forms,   the most popular being his yogic form in which he  has a matted  hair decorated by a moon, wearing an elephant hide, applying all over his body the  ashes of the cremation ground where he dances ,In addition   he ties a serpent on his neck. He has another form in which he has five faces , which are called Eeshana , Tatpurusha , Aghora  , Vamadeva   and sadhyojatha ,He has yet another form called Nataraja  , where Shiva does the  cosmic male dance called  Thandava . In addition to these forms  in South India he is also shown as Bhikshatana (In the form of a pretty  Beghgar), Sundara( As the consort of  Goddess Meenakshi of Madhurai), Sharabha( The form he took to scare  Lord Narasimha) , Somaskanda , Manjunatha  and so on. Inspite of several such forms, People worship him  generally as the  Shiva Linga form. Unlike most of the temples of other Gods , Shiva is consecrated alone  without his consort. People in south believe  that  we  should not make a    full round of  the sanctum sanctorum  of Shiva temples. They also believe that  we should not leave a temple of Lord Shiva without taking rest and  that we should not remove anything belonging  to the Shiva temple  to outside the temple.
He is  also   called as Visweshwara (Lord of universe)  , Mahadeva , Arunachala , Parameshwara  and   so on.He has two sons  Lord Ganesa  and Lord Subrahmanya.
Let us worship this God who is an ocean of mercy  and get his blessing)
