Kashta   ne so nar  pathe, karthe  thab senaa Jai

Oh son of Sun God  who is saluted  by elephants, who is god who is elder  brother  of Yama,

That  human being   never has  any problems  , if they   wish you  victory

3.Thej apar  thumhara, swami sahaa  nahin jaave,

Thum se vimukh jagath mein , sukh  nahi pave,

Namo nama Ravi Nandan   sab graham   sirthajaa,

Vamseedhar   yash gave  , rakhiyo prabhu  Laajaa Jai

Your   shine  is so great oh God that  no one can bear it  ,

The umbrella  over your head is shining and your  statues  are lovely,

Below your feet flows the ganges and lovely flames  are  coming up.

3.Brahma  Vedh pade nith dware, Shankar Dhyan dhare,

Sevathchamvar dulavath, Narad  nrithya kare.

Daily Lord Brahma   reads Vedas in your gate and Lord Shiva  is meditating,

The  devotees   are fanning you and Sage Narada  is dancing

4.Sundar guphaa  thumhari , man ko athi  bhave,

Baar baar  dekhne ko, Iyn maan man chaven

Your cave  is very pretty  and it makes our mind happy ,

And  our mind  wants to again and again   see  you.

5.Bhavan pe jande joule, Gandaa   dwani  bhaaje,

OOnchaa parvath theraa , maathaa  priya laage

Over your  temple flags are waving and the  bells are  tolling,

Your mountain is very tall , and Oh mother  we  love it

6.Paan  supaari  dwaajaa  naariyal   beant pushpa mevaa,

Daas khade charanom may, darsan dho    devaa

Bringing to you you as gift  Betel leaves, arecanut, flags , coconut and flowers,

Your devotee is standing on his feet, please   show us your form.

(Here is a unique prayer in Malayalam addressed to the Lord of Guruvayur in his ten Avataras to take care of one’s son at every stage of his life. I have not come across any other prayer with this theme in any other religion or languages)

Ipparil pukazh pongum Guruvay-

Rappa pothi , jagatpathe madhava,

Ippavapetta gnan akhilesa, nin,

Tripadambuje veenu vanangunen.                        1

Oh,  Lord of Guruvayur, whose fame,

Rises in this world, Oh lord of universe,

Oh Madhava, this innocent poor man,

Salutes you by falling at your lotus,

Like feet, Oh God of the Universe.

Ninthiruvadi onnu kanignagil,

Endu asadyamayullu , Ijagathingal,

Bandu vathsala , nee ozinjarume,

In this universe, what is there ,

That cannot be achieved, If,

When I am filling all that I see in this world,

Along with greed in this private bag of mine,

Oh God who rides on a bird. Oh Hari,

Oh Danwanthari, please take care of me,

Without taking a deep dislike to me.

Uthsahathode kootar onnichee,

Vathsan vellathil mungi kulikkumbol,

Mathsya roopa, purushothama hare,

With exuberance takes bath in a pond,

Hey  Hari , Hey  greatest of men, who has the form of a fish,

Please take care of him with great affection.

Karma sakshiyagum jagnnayaga,

Kar mugil varna, karunya varidhe,

Orma kai vitturangum en unniye,

Koorma vigraha palichidenam.                                    6

Oh lord of the universe, who is,

Witness to all actions, Oh Lord,

Of the colour of the  black cloud,

Oh ocean of mercy, please take care,

Of this my son, who is sleeping,

With no care, Oh God who became a tortoise.

Prouda balanmar othu vanangalil,

Oodamodham  kalichu nadakkumbol,

Kroda vigraha, danava nigraha,

Peeda koodathe nadha rakshikkenam.                                7

Without care travels and plays  in the forest,

Oh God who took the form of a boar,

Oh God who  killed several Asuras,

Please take care of him without any trouble, Oh Lord.

Bhootha pretha pisachukal moolamayi,

Beethi poondivan ravil uzhalumbol,

Bhootha bhavana, hey Narasimha hare,

Preethi poorvam abhayam ekidenam.                                   8

Due to devils, ghosts and bad souls,

When he tosses in his bed due to fear, Oh Hari,

Oh Narasimha, Oh Lord who takes care of beings,

Please extend him protection with affection, Oh Lord.

Padu vanga prabhuthwa madham ullil,

Pedum youvana kalathu ivan ethum,

Kuduthayidum apathozhikkuvan,

Padu vamana murthe vangunnen.                                             9

During the time, when he reaches youth,

With mind full of idiocy, snobbishness,

And exuberance, to protect him from any dangers,

I salute that great God Vamana  with devotion.

Bharga sishya , thaponidhe, Kerala,

Swarga souseelya leela visaradhe,

Bhargava bhagawane , makannu sa-

Nmargamayathu katti rakshikkenam.                                  10

The disciple of Bhargava, the storehouse of Thapas,

Who playfully made the heaven of Kerala,

Oh God Bhargava, please show the right,

Path to my son, lead him and protect him.

Sathya dharma rathany sadacharam,

Nithyanay ivan  vanu sukikkuvan,

Sathya roopa , hey rama dasaratha,

Puthra Raghava , nithyam vanangidunnen.                            11

I salute you daily , Oh Rama,

Who is Raghava ,the son of Dasaratha

And who is personification of truth,

So that my son lives in truth and piety,

And observes good conduct in his life.

Hala mudritha baho , maha veera,

Bala nirjjitha  sarvari sanjaya,

Balabadhra  bhavan ende puthrannay,

Balabadhra gunangal egidenam.                                             12

O h Balabadhra who carries a plough,

Who is a great warrior, who is full of strength,

And treasure house of all that is good,

Please give my son, all your good qualities.

Nanda nandana, Vrundavana priya,

Nandaneeya guna gana varidhe,

Nandi poorvam en nandanil kani,

Njhu indira pathe , palichu kollenam.                                       13

Oh son of Nanda, Oh lover of Brindavana,

Of lad with ocean of all good qualities,

I gratefully request you to show mercy,

On my son and take care of him, Oh Lord of Lakshmi.

Gadgapane khalajana nasana,

Khadgi roopa , kali mala mochana,

Math guro kamala dala lochana,

Salgunalaya, paala balane.                            14

He who holds the sword, who destroys ,

Bad souls, who is known as Kalki ,

Who is cure to ills of kali age,

Who is my teacher, who has lotus like eyes,

And who is temple of all that is good, take care of my son.

Paal kadalil phaneeswara metha mel ,

Akkamodennum palli kollum vibho,

Nalkku naal  varum arthikal okkeyum,

Neeki rakshikka venam, jagat pathe.                  15

Oh Lord who daily lies down on

The bed of a  serpent, floating.

On the ocean of milk along with grace,

Please save my son from the desire after desires,

That are bound to come in this world, Oh Lord.

Ayussambathum  ambathum eekenam,

Thejassum yassu ojassum  mey sukham,

Sreyasllam ivannu labhikkuvan,

Asissu arulename daivame.                                  16

Oh god ,please bless him with a life,

Of fifty and fifty years, shine, fame,

Active life, physical comfort,

And well known recognition, Oh God.

Vidhyayum vinayadhi gunangalum,

Hrudya soubhagya  sampath samrudhiyum,

Aadyanamumbhgavat bhakthiyum , mukthiyum,

Veda vedhya bhavan ivannu ekidenam.                  17

Oh Good who is described by the Vedas,

Please give this boy, education, humility,

Broad mind, lot of riches, teaching,

Devotion to God and salvation.

Prayamakunna kalathu ameya nin,

Mayakodinnavane valaykkola,

Mayaa manusha nin pada padmathil,

Bhooyo bhooyo namayanvaham.                                  18

Oh,  enchanter, I salute again,

Again endlessly your lotus feet,

With a request that when this boy ,

Becomes a man, You will not ,

Trouble him with your illusions.

Viswa krupa virat purusha prabho,

Viswapavana, visvaika palaka,

Viswsamhara viswaikanadha hey,

Viswavanditha vishno namosthuthe.                         19

Who is merciful to the universe,

Who is the great soul behind the universe,

Who is the most blessed of the universe,

Who looks after the entire universe,

Who destroys the universe ,

Asthamichum padikkum janangalkku.

Nisthula gunapoornaram puthrare,

1.Vambicha   pon kalasamonnu thadichu neenda,

Thumbikarathil athi santhathayodu menthi,

Kumbhee praveera mukha, kumba kulukki vannen,

Mumbil kalikkuga ganadhipa, kai thozhunnen.

With great peace  holding in his huge   thick  trunk m,

A very  big golden  pot,

Oh valorous lord with a pot like face, please shake your big paunch,

And play before  me , Oh chief of Ganas  , I salute you.

2.Antham petaatha katu samsmruthi sagarathil ,

Anthar bhavathode kidannuzhalum  namukkai,

Swantham vinayaka manoharamakum eka-

Dantham krupa nilaya palam athakkiyaalum.

For the sake of us   who are suffering with inner emotions

IN the  ocean of concentrated   culture without end,

Oh our own Ganesa, your one tusk is   very pretty ,

And so make it  the bridge for us to cross that ocean.

3.Ha ha  maha duritha  ghora bhayaantharaaya ,

MOhaabdhiyilpathithanaam ivan eevidathil,

Dehantharam yetheeduvathinnu idayaakidolle,

Neehaara  saila thanayaa suthaa  pahi pahi.

Alas, alas , I have  fallen  this way  in the ocean of passion.

Which is a mixture  of great suffering and horrible fear,

Please do not  give a chance    for me to attain death,

Oh son of the daughter  of the mountain of snow, Please protect me.

4.SWarvasikalkku  mazhalaake akaththidunna,

Sarvaathmaja, pranatha  palaka,Loka bandho,

SArvartha sidhikaraam  charangri padmam,

Nirvaadham yen karalil  nirthukil  jnan jayichu

Oh God who removes  all sufferings  even to those in heaven,

Oh son of Lord Shiva who looks after  those who salute you  , Oh friend  of the world,

If you keep your  lotus like   feet  which grants  all desires ,

Without any hesitation in my mind , I will  achieve  victory.

5.Keram karumbu kadali pazham appam, alpa –

Neram vidaathe ada then  gratham mennithellam ,

Herambha, thinnu maruvumbozhum , aartha  rakshaa,

Bhaaram  bhavaan karuthalodu  nadathidunnu.

Coconut, sugarcane, banana fruit, without ,

Leaving much time along with Ada , honey ghee and appam,

Oh Lord Ganesa,  even when you are eating all these,

You carefully perform the heavy  load of the service to  your devotees.

6.Jnanadhiga  pradhitha vaibhava bho  Ganesa,

Jnan aasa poale vazhipadukal cheithu kollaam,

Nanaa vipathukal ozhichu Bhavth padaabja,

Sthanadhi vasamudan yen karal aarnidatte.

Oh Lord Ganesa  who has the greatness  of exuberance of knowledge,

I would conduct services and worships as per your desire,

Please remove different type of dangers and grant me,

The chance of living near your lotus like feet and let my mind become exuberant.

7.Pangam pedatha padi patharamaathu koodum,

Thangathinum thala thakarnnidum aathva dhangam,

Thingal kala dhara, Ganathipa nithya mastha-

Thaangam ninappathinnu thaan athilaagraham may

Oh Lord Ganesa who wears the  crescent of the moon,

The shine of your body   would powder even the  purest gold,

Which has not been made dirty   by the rising dust,

Oh Chief of Ganas but my  desire , more than that,

Would be  for you to daily think about my worries.

8.Sonasma rasmi  thadavunna bhavannakharchi-

Senaanga  chooda suthaa, Mad duritha andhakaram,

Kanaathe yaakki yakame kudi j kolluvaanai,

ThaaNaasu jnan kari varanana, kai thozhunnen.

Oh son of Lords Shiva  who wears the moon ,

You  are  massaged by  the red rays of the sun,

Oh Lord with the blessed  face of the elephant,

You should  completely remove  the darkness of my sufferings,

And live  within my mind   speedily  and I salute you.

(The prayer  to the killer of Madhu)

   (This is a remarkable prayer addressed to Lord Vishnu, in his form as killer of Madhu  .At the end it tells us that   everything   can be achieved   by  the twelve lettered chant  viz. Om Namo Bhagawathe Vasudevaya.)

Sri Ganesaya  Nama

The salutation to Lord  Ganesa.

1.Om ithi  jnana mathrrena rogaa jeernena nirjitha,

Kaala nidhraam  prapannnosmi   , thrahi  maam madhusudhana.

AS soon  I have the wisdom of OM ,  I have   won over the effects of sickness,

And I surrender  to your  perennial sleep , Please  protect me  , oh killer of Madhu.

2.Na  gather vidhyathe cha anyaa, thwameva  saranam mama,

Papa pange   nimagnosmi   , thrahi maam  Madhusudhana

I do not find  any other path  except surrendering to you,

As I am getting  drowned in the lake  of sin, Please protect me  , Oh killer of Madhu.

3.Mohito  moha jaalens  puthra   daara grahadishu

THrishnaascha  peeda maanosmi, Trahi  maam madhusudana

Being entangled   in the net of  attachment of from hunger  for  son, wife and home,

I am suffering  from the pangs  of thirst, please protect me  , Oh killer of Madhu.

4,Bhakthiheenam  cha dheenam cha dukha Sokathuram prabho,

Anasrayam anadham cha, Trahi maam Madhusudana.

4.Oh Lord, I lack devotion and am  depressed and suffering from sorrow ,

And also I am  an orphan  with  no one to depend on  and so protect me killer of Madhu.

5.Gatha gathena sraanthosmi Deerga samsara  varmathsu,

Yena bhooyo  na gachchami , trahi maam  Madhusudana

5. I am tired  of the  goings and comings of long  bulwark of  Samsara ,

For the sake of not going in it  again  , protect me killer of Madhu

6.Bahavo  hi  mayaa drushtaa klesaschaiva  prudhak pruDhak,

Garba vaso maha dukham  trahi maam Madhusudana.

6.Again and again I am seeing several  types of troubles,

And living in the womb  is  a great sorrow   and so protect me killer of Madhu.

7.THena DEva prapannosmi  tranartha thwath paarayana,

DUkharnava  parithranaath, THrahi maam Madhusudana.

7.Oh God I have  completely surrendered to you for protection from you  ,

For the sake  of saving me from ocean of sorrow , Protect me of killer of Madhu

 8,Vaachaa   yachcha  prathijnaatham karmanaa nopa paditham,

THath paapaarjitha  magnosmi  , trahi  maam madhusudana

8.With words being  bound by prosecution   and  actions by circumstances,

I have earned lot of sins  and plunged in them,  Protect me oh killer  of Madhu

9.Sukrutham na krutham  kinjit  dushkrutham   cha krutham mayaa,

SAmasara ghore Magnosmi, TRahi maam  Madhusudana

9.Having done  no good deeds  and   having done   several bad deeds,

I am drowned in the   horrible ocean of SAmsara, Protect me  oh killer  of Madhu

10.Dehanthara sahasreshu cha anyonya    braamitho mayaa,

Thiryakthwam  Manushathwam cha, Thrahi maam Madhusudana.

10 . I have  taken  thousands of births which were attached together,

Taking various forms of animals   and humans , so please protect me  oh killer of Madhu

11.Vaachayaami yadhonmatha pralapaami thavagratha,

Jaraa marana  bheethosmi  THrahi maam Madhusudana.

11.  For coming near you  I talked like mad ones  and bewailed,

AS  I am scared  of old age and death  , protect me  oh killer of Madhu

12.Yathra  yathra cha yaathosmi Strishu , Purusheshu cha,

THatha thathra chalaa bhakthi  TRahi maam Madhusudana

12. When as  men or woman, I kept on suffering pains,

My devotion to you became firm and so protect me  oh Killer of Madhu

13.Gathwaa gathwaa nivarthanthe Chandra suryodhayo grahaa,

Adhyaapi cha nivarthanthe Dwadasaksharachinthakaa

13.AS time goes on , the moon and sun rises  and planets  do not turn back,

But in spite of it , thought  of the twelve lettered  chant  turns  them back

14,OOrdhwa patala marthyeshu vyaptham lokam jagatrayam,

Dwdasakrarathparam naasthi Vasudevena  Baashitham

14.In the three worlds  of hell , heaven and  the earth spread with humans ,

There is nothing greater  than the   twelve lettered chant as told by  Vasudeva

15.Dwadasaksharam Maha Manthram   sarva kama  phala pradham,

Garba vasa nivasena Sukena Paribashitham.

15,The great twelve lettered chant, would give results in all our acts ,

And was told be sage  Suka   when he was  in the womb of his mother

16,DWadasaksharam  nirahaaro   ya ya padeth Arivasare ,

Sa Gached Vaishnavam sthanam  yathra  yoogeeswaro Hari.

16 All those who  chant these  twelve letters on Vishnu’s day without food,

Would go and attain the place of Vaishnavas  by the grace of Hari who is the God of Yoga

Sri Sukha deva virachitham Madhu sudana stotram sampoornam

Thus ends the prayer to killed of Madhu written by the great sage Suka
