Dwadasa stotra-IV
By
Madhvacharya\
Translated by
P.R.Ramachander
(Madhvacharya also known as Ananda theertha Bhagwat Pada had composed
12 prayers at the time of consecration of the Krishna idol in Udupi. These are
Considered as very sacred by his followers. I am trying to translate them
Individually . The third prayer is a prayer addressed to Lord Hari , And,
Gives some indications of the ideas of his philosophy.
The principles governing the system of philosophy called “Dwaitham”.
The text in devanagari is available in http://www.dvaita.net/pdf/others/dstotra/d_stotra.pdf
Not being an expert on Dwaitha philosophy, I could not comprehend the meanings of many of these verses. I have used the translation and Commentry by Sri N.A.P.S.Rao given in
www.geocities.ws/harshala_rajesh/dwadashastotra in understanding them.)
1.Nija poorna sukhamitha bodha thanu,
Parashakthi rananthguna parama.
Ajaramarana sakalarthihara,
Kamalapathi reedya thamo avathu na.
His form is full of bliss and knowledge,
His power in beyond the endless qualities,
He is beyond birth , aging and death and destroyer of all wants,
He is the Lord of Lakshmi and he removes all darkness.
2.Yadha supthi gathopi Hari Sukhavan,
Shuka roopina maahuritho nigamaa,
Swamathi prabhavam Jagadasya yatha,
Parabodha thanum cha Thatha khapathim.
Though he never sleeps he is always full of bliss,
And so the Vedas describe him as the essence of bliss,
And this world was created by a wish of his,
And he is greatly wise and controller of sense organs.
3.Bahu chithra jagath bahudhakaranath,
Para shakthiranantha guna param,
Suka roopa mamushya padam param,
Smarathasthu bhavishyathi thath sathatham.
He creates the world of variety by using variety of things,
He has divine abilities and endless qualities,
He has a form of bliss and is the greatest divine one,
And by remembering him always one attains his abode of bliss.
4.Smareneahi praesi thurasya Vibhor,
Malinani manamsi krutha karanam,
Vimalam hi padam paramam swaratham,
Tharunaka savarna majasya Hare.
The form of Lord Hari is without any evils , with no changes due to mind,
Pure , supreme , self fulfilled, having the colour of rising sun,
Without birth and would make sense organs pure ,
Immediately just by remembering him.
5.Vimalai sruthi sana nisatha thamai,
Sumano asibhirasu nihathya drudam,
Balinam nija vairina mathma thamo ,
Bidha meesa manantha mupaswa harim.
Oh one with good mind, use the sword of pure knowledge ,
Which is sharpened by the grindstone of Vedas
Against the strong enemy of darkness of mind,
And then start serving the eternal Lord Hari.
6.Na hi Viswa srujo Vibhu sammu ,
Purandhara Soorya mukhana paranu paran,
Srujatheedyatha movathi hanthi ,
Nijam padama payathi pranatham swadheeya.
Not only he creates , upkeeps and destroys the world,
But also creates the creators of the world like,
Brahma, Shiva,, Indra , Soorya and others,
And those who truly worship him with devotion,
Are taken by him to his own abode.
7.Paramopt ramesi athurasya samo na hi,
Kaschid bhoothra bhavishyathi cha,
Kwachi dhadhya thanopi na poorna sadaa,
Ganithedya guna anubhavai kathanou.
There was no one equal in divinity to the Lord of Lakshmi,
Neither will there be one in the past or in the future,
For his form would always have bliss , wisdom etc,
Each of which is complete, matchless and infinite.
8.Ithi deva varasya harer sthavanam
Kruthavan Muneer uthamam madaratha,
Sukha theertha padarbihitha padatha,
Thidham bhavathi druva micha sukham.
This great prayer of Hari , the greatest of devas,
Was composed by the great sage called,
Ananda theertha , if repeated with devotion,
Would speedily lead the permanent bliss.
